San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was irritable during a recent interview about the city's budget deficit, telling a reporter he was "disappointed" in the line of questioning.
It was his first sit-down with the press since he last month abruptly and without explanation dropped out of the race to be California's next governor.
In the Thursday interview, Newsom criticized CBS 5 political reporter Hank Plante, who asked about the mayor's recent travel schedule and unusual behavior since ending his political bid.
Newsom wanted to talk about San Francisco's $522 million budget deficit but ended up playing defense against Plante's questions. As he left the interview while the cameras were still rolling, he told Plante "off the record," he was disappointed.

Yes it was one of those interviews that Hank Plante scores from time to time. He throws the politician a curve and leaves everyone, including the audience wincing

I didn't follow the CA race and know little about what went on during Newsom's campaign. But what I just watched felt like a reporter needling him until he got the irritable responses he WANTED. Seriously, that interviewer just seemed a bit shady to me. Must be a history there that I don't know about.

This was definitely a bad day. Lately he's been skipping out of many public events, and even pulled a Sanford and disappeared for a couple of days, leaving his staff to hold the bag. People have questions, which he refuses to answer. So there it is.
Seems like losing the chance at becoming Governor has really thrown him for a loop.

I LOVED it! I love when politicians challenge the validity of the crap being thrown at them by the press ... This is a big reason that the Republican base loves Sarah Palin, too.
If someone were to sit down with me on TV and ask, "What do you say about the cartoon in the SF newspapers" or "people are saying this about you" ... I would say the same thing: who CARES what they think???

The Republican "base" (which hasn't much further to go to reach absolutely base) "loves" Sarah Palin because they don't know that truth is relevant, and don't know the meaning of "vapid" and "meaningless bafflegab".
All that matters to them is that she claims to be a Republican, are told that she's "attractive," and she spews contrarian nonsense at the "liberals" and "elitists".
None of which has anything to do with relevant politics.

You ran this under the headline "Newsom Throws Tantrum." I didn't see him throw a tantrum at all. What I saw was a politician irritated that a reporter's line of questioning was leading him and baiting him.
I get sick of how the media blows everything out of proportion, exaggerates, and twists the truth. I generally come to TPM for hard, honest analysis. Please don't go down the road of mischaracterizing events and blowing things out of proportion.
Isn't it likely that a guy who had high hopes for a run for the governorship might be a bit down after having to end his campaign? But Hank Plante (and now TPM) are reading all kinds of nefarious motives into it.

The article also implies that he stomped off in the middle of the interview, when from the looks of it (I didn't check the unedited version) it seems like it was over and he was just expressing his irritation.
I'm no fan of Newsom and he should expect all those things to be asked (though the reporter did get to badgering after a while), but come on Christina - leave the WashTimes crap behind.

Well the meat of the interview is Gavin dodging two subjects, one of which he brought up: the budget shortfall and where he's been. I mean really, he says he was three events at the same time. Certainly Mr. Plante had more than two questions prepared for the interview.

Maybe -- but the tape is edited in such a way (all those quick cuts & jumps) that it's possible Newsom DID answer those questions, at least partially.

Jeez. it's amazing how people see different things. I too did not see a "tantrum". The reporter was determined to follow a line of questioning that Newsom was simply not interested in and he made that clear from the outset. The reporter wouldn't take a hint and, understandably, Newsom got tired and frustrated. C'mon, TPM you can do better than that!

The play of 'off the record' only counts if they agree seems a bit nuanced to me. I would expect when the Mayor or anyone else turns to a reporter and says, 'this is off the record' that a responsible reporter would honor that. It appears that Plante was merely going for upsetting the guy and not reporting the facts.

Agreed. Allowing politicians to say "this is off the record" without agreeing to it beforehand leads to situations like Timmeh (may he rest in peace) Russert just assuming that all conversations were off the record as a default, so that he only reported what his administration sources would let him report. That's not journalism, that's stenography.

This interview makes me worry that Gavin is coming seriously unglued. Hank Plante did a perfectly straightforward interview and Gavin threw a tantrum because he could not charm his way out of a bad spot of his own making.
This has been his M.O. for the last few years and frankly, I find it scary to watch him self-destruct.

I think the reporter was hoping to catch Newsom in a "Hiking the Appalachian Trail" story. You know...his press secretary not knowing where he is, so he says Newsom is sick. Of course it all falls apart when it comes out that he was really on a plane to Hawaii. Then the press secretary resigns abruptly?
Smells like a story. Any reporter worth their weight in salt is going to ask about this.

It's interesting to me how people regard this interview.
Is there a discrepancy in reaction between those who "enjoy" having Mr. Newsom as their mayor and those who don't?
For many San Franciscans, there is little Newsom can do that is right at this point. So we watched it from Mr. Plante's perspective.
(And for the record, Mr. Plante spends more time with ordinary San Franciscans than Mr. Newsom, who's distinguished himself largely among the constituency of the most rarified and costly parts of Pacific Heights and Sea Cliff - two beautiful neighborhoods with fine people, but hardly representative of the hands-on (and overwhelmingly liberal/progressive) slobs who keep this place running.)
(It's not just Palinites who make up "ordinary people.")

Instead of trying to smile through this ambush, Newsom should have gone right at his attacker. Should have looked at the guy and said, "You want me to respond to a cartoon of me in a diaper? This is your question? You call yourself a reporter?"

Gavin Newsom has acted like a petulant spoiled brat who hates to be held accountable for anything.
The people here who are taking his side don't seem to have done their homework- namely that the mayor disappeared from the city without telling anyone, even his aides and turned up in Hawaii. He blew off major meetings. If a reporter can't ask about that, what can't he ask about?
Newsom sounds like a dry drunk to me.

CHECK his body language at the beginning of the video - that sly, vixenish (and-yet-tentative!) lowering of his lanky body into the chair using the arms of the chair - almost as a Nautilus machine. Nice!
And nicely absurd.
His response to Plante's question "Where have you been?" which we have all been wondering about? He completely dodges the questions.
Plante is right - it's not just the press that Newsom's been absent from. He missed the China-SF conference? Hello? Pacific Rim investments don't interest you? Investments from China wouldn't have any beneficial effect on this city's deficit? (BTW, have you seen our demographics? What are we, 33% Asian, with one-fifth of the city's population Chinese-American?)
Oh yeah, the Gettys aren't Chinese, why should he care? LMFAO. Charlie don't surf!!!
Then, some of your staff members have left (and trashed you.) Response? "Yeah, I made a lot of changes."

Narcissists hate to be questioned. Count me as a SF resident who, like many, sees Newsome as DiFi Lite, a DINO who is only in it for the fame and power. He can't hack anything more demanding than a GQ photo shoot. While the rest of the country may see a smiling fresh face, the reality is that Newsome is a spoiled little rich kid riding the coattails of big money $f Dem$.

The context here is that Gavin disappeared right after he dropped out of the governor's race. He packed his bags and left for a Hawaii vacation with no warning, missing several events that he was scheduled to attend, and it wasn't clear who was in charge of the City in his absence (though he would dispute that). His political enemies on the board of supes jumped on that. Additionally, when Gavin returned from HI, he went into radio silence with the press and was completely uncommunicative.
Really, this is somewhat of a tempest in a teapot. But if you want a decent summary of what's been happening in our fair City, check CW Nevius' column in the 11/19 Chronicle. I'm not a Nevius fan, but this sums it up pretty well:

No, this wasn't a tantrum, so the headline is not only misleading, but it demeans the intelligence of TPM readers. I think we all know a tantrum when we see one, and this wasn't it. The reporter mentions the word "tantrum" during the interview, but that's hardly a reason for using it in the headline.
But Newsome has an incredibly thin skin for someone who is trying to get people to vote for him. Sad, really - I thought his stand on same-sex marriage was courageous, and may have sparked, for better or worse, the whole debate over granting equal rights to gays and lesbians (even to the point where an airhead like Carrie Prejean thought that anyone could already choose to get married in this country).
But I tend to agree with the commenter upthread who compared him to Palin - he seems to regard any criticism of him as being personally motivated rather than substantive, and his inability to deal with pesky TV reporters mirrors her inability to continue being governor of Alaska because of all those pesky ethics complaints from Alaskans that she had to deal with. Palin and Newsome probably have similar political futures as well.
