Rep. Nathan Deal (R-GA), a candidate in the GOP primary for Governor of Georgia, has announced that he is signing a letter to the White House with several of his colleagues -- asking for a copy of President Obama's birth certificate.

Deal made the announcement this morning in an online chat held by his campaign, when asked by Tom Crawford of the Georgia Report (subscription required):

[Comment From Tom Crawford]
Do you believe that Barack Obama is a native-born American citizen who is eligible to serve as president? I am asking because your comments on this issue have been a little ambiguous. I would appreciate your clearing this up.

Nathan Deal - I am joining several of my colleagues in the House in writing a letter to the President asking that he release a copy of his birth certificate so we can have an answer to this question.

Deal's campaign spokesman Harris Blackwood confirmed the authenticity of the chat to TPM, explaining the Congressman's comment: "There have been so many constituents, a lot of people have asked him, they ask him on the campaign trail. Let's just get an answer, that's all we're saying, not suggesting anything to the contrary."

If not, we can't take his Freedom Fighting credentials seriously.

All due respect to A. Lincoln, isn't it time we let the South secede? They can revert to whatever olden days fantasy they choose and the rest of us can get on with the business of living in the 21st century.

Obviously the kooks in my party are intent on trying to undo the results of a National election. But be assured that those of us who have lived in Hawaii also understand that Obama's birth certificate is authentic. I have nieces and a nephew born over there and they also each have a birth certificate exactly like Obama's. Only the most stupid in my party would keep rable-rousing about this issue. Amazing that so many Republicans in my party are so silly that they do not even recognize different state's rights to do their birth records however suits them. But this silliness does not reflect on Obama, only an the totally stupid Republicans who are so unaware of different cultural situations. They seem to not even know the rule that if one has an American mom, then the child is an American. However, in addition to that, Hawaii has a contemporaneous birth announcement in the local newspaper as well as their usual birth certificate. But it seems my party's membership seems intent on just looking terribly stupid on this issue. Know what? They have met that stupidity goal.

The real question is - what kind of racist crazy is Rep. Deal? Is he one of those that says that you need two citizen parents to convey citizenship, so it doesn't matter if Obama was born in Honolulu? That's somewhat less crazy (though still racist and wrong). (Telling that the source for this theory is the Swiss de Vatell and not the English Blackstone).

Or is he one of those that thinks that the President was actually born in Kenya? Because that's a whole different level of crazy. To believe that, you first have to deny the official record, reject the verification thereof by state officials, and dismiss the contemporaneous newspaper announcements drawn from hospital records.

Then you go on the Never-Never land fantasy which starts with a graduate student on scholarship and his young, pregnant wife undertaking a journey from Honolulu to Kenya. Even today, this trip requires nearly 24 hours of flying, multiple airport changes, and a substantial amount of money. It was more arduous and expensive in 1961 (the pre-747 days). And that's just to get to Nairobi - to be born in Mombasa (which all birthers believe because it is the more Muslim part of Kenya), you add on a not short overland journey over unreliable roads. Then, you have them placing a call back to Honolulu to the newspapers to fake the announcement. (Another big expense, and international phone lines to places like Kenya were and are unreliable - it's why mobiles are so popular). Then, they undertake a long journay back after the kid is born and somehow get the State of Hawaii to record Honolulu as the birthplace.

All so that in 48 years, this child of a marriage that was still illegal in, well, most of the states that believe this birther crap, born before the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, born when civil rights workers were being killed in the South, George Wallace was standing in doorways, and Bull Connor was unleashing fire hoses and dogs, would someday grow up and become one of the fewer than 45 people in this country's history that become President.

So, Rep. Deal, which kind of crazy racist are you? That you are crazy and a racist is not in doubt, we just need to know whether you are mildly unhinged or whether you are flat-out whacko.

Obama's Hawaiian COLB says "Date Filed by Registrar" NOT "Date Accepted by State Regsitrar". -Not even the State of Hawaii is willing to accept the report of Obama's Hawaiian birth without reservation.

There's a reason Obama doesn't want to make his vault certificate public, and that scares the heck out of those who support him. Not one of his supporters can tell us who witnessed Obama's alleged birth in Hawaii. They use ad hominem attacks so that they (his supporters) can save themselves from the truth.

You are so right about the ad hominem attacks. As soon as the name calling starts on either side, I stop reading. No insults- just the facts: What is needed to ensure a candidate is properly vetted is the long form "vault" copy of the birth certificate - the original which would have been prepared by the hospital and filed with the Office of Vital Statistics. The State Department often does not require the long form in support of a passport application. And it is possible to register a birth in Hawaii for a child not born in Hawaii and get a certificate of live birth:
http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/vol06_ch0321-0344/HRS0338/HRS_0338-0017_0008.HTM “Certificates for children born out of State. (a) Upon application of an adult or the legal parents of a minor child, the director of health shall issue a birth certificate for such adult or minor, provided that proof has been submitted to the director of health that the legal parents of such individual while living without the Territory or State of Hawaii had declared the Territory or State of Hawaii as their legal residence for at least one year immediately preceding the birth or adoption of such child..." It is also possible to file an application to change a birth certificate at any subsequent time - for example, adding the father's name later or changing the child's name on the certificate. That is why the "vault" original version is needed to substantiate any claim. A newspaper announcement is not a legal document. A graphic on a website is not a legal document. Hawaiian officials confirmed a document exists but not what is typed in box "7c" (County and State or Foreign Country). If Mr. Obama were born abroad, unfortunately at the time of his birth in 1961, immigration laws were such that his mother was not quite old enough to confer US citizenship upon him. The law has since changed. It is a small but very important technicality.

What's more important? National security, or the wishes of one man to keep something, that is not even personal information, private?

Why do you think it's so important for Obama to keep the name of the person who affirmed his birth private? Could it be that Grandma Dunham lied, in order to bestowe the benefits of U.S. Citizenship on her Kenyan-born grandchild?

Can you handle the truth? Unless you can tell us who affirmed Obama's Hawaiian birth, you don't know the truth. You only know bits and pieces.

misha,

Is Glenn Beck the de facto President of the United States? Can nuclear weapons be launched on the sole command of Glenn Beck?

Let's get our piorities straight.

Best case -Obama releases his vault certificate. It lists Kapiolani as the hospital of his birth, and it was a doctor that affirmed/attended his birth. Then Hawaii can explain why they didn't accept Obama's birth report, and people can make fun of the birthers for questioning Obama.

Worst case -Obama really was born in Kenya. He's not even a U.S. Citizen. He gives the order to launch a nuclear weapon at an enemy of the Kenyan government. -The outrage caused by such an atrocious act initiates an investigation. It is then found out that Obama was never a U.S. Citizen. -The rest of the world will never again trust the U.S.

--If asking for Obama's vault BC (or a certified copy thereof) would cause him extreme hardship, that would be a different story. However, I'll bet it can be done by making one phone call. --It's time to end this silly game.

Look Mr. Truth. The tea baggers said the Pledge of Allegiance today. Everyone knows that liberals can't handle hearing the Pledge. We develop severe cases of enantiodromia in as little time as one hour after the words are said.

So you probably ought to go find a more receptive group for your delusions. It will take us at least 6 months before we regain our equilibrium again.

Seashell,

I only pray that most liberals don't use big words without fully understanding the meaning of the words. For example "enantiodromia" is hardly something one could develop a severe case of.

In terms of the Pledge of Allegiance, the enantiodromic result would be mass expatriation by the liberal masses.

I pray that Glenn Beck comes clean, and issues a denial about that 1990 rape and murder. That's all we ask: a simple denial. Instead, he has spent over $200K trying to shut down a web site, asking a simple question.

Instead, that alcoholic and drug addict is trying to shift the question to others. Another question: does Glenn Beck beat his wife? I'm not saying he does, but why won't he issue a simple denial like, "I had nothing to do with that rape and murder in 1990, and since I've been in therapy, I don't hit my wife."

I also read on the internet that barnyard animals become skittish when Joseph Farah is near. Why?

Have you ever applied for a US Passport? In the requirements for what a certified copy of a BC should show the words "date the birth record was filed" are included. Note: it does not say accepted, filled out, or red flagged. It says "filed".

Would you like to know why? Because birth and death records are filed. They are not "accepted" graciously followed by a cute little thank you note from the registrar.

Move those red flags and maybe you'll see reality. Although I put the odds of that happening at 1 to 100000000000000000000.

seashell,

Are you really trying to use the language of 22CFR51.42(a) to avoid the issue?

The birth certificate requirement of 51.42(a) states that the birth certificate must "show a filing date within one year of the date of birth".

A birth certificate denoting that it was "accepted by the state registrar" within one year of the date of birth, is considered to have been filed within one year of birth.

OR do you consider the overwhelming number of those with Hawaiian COLBs (everyone delivered by a doctor, nurse or midwife who was registered with the state, or who filed a birth report, but also provided the supporting documentation to get the registrar to accept the birth report), to not be able to get a passport?

Don't be scared. I'll hold your hand. You can have the courage to find out why the State of Hawaii questions Obama's reported birth.

Do not prosecute Obama for being President of the US because he's black, but rather prosecute those who went and kidnapped blacks from Africa to this land. And, by the way,the Native Americans, the Indians as they call them, who were discovered along with the land, are the only ones who may claim their country back from all of us invaders.People die, but ignorance lives on. You're wrong--in fact, McCain had to undergo HEARINGS in Congress prior to running for Prez in order for Congress to determine--from his long-form birth certificate, among other evidence--that he was, in fact, eligible to run!

So your corrected question must be: If Obama WASN'T a black man, wouldn't he be required to prove his eligibility? Answer: YES!

If McCAin was the president, would you ask to see his birth certificate too, for it is said that he was not born in the US? Obama is more a US citizen than any of you hypocrite, immature dirty, ignorant, racist Republicans. You cannot stop God's work. No one, but the native Indian, is American by the freaking way. I'm sure if your search your genealogy, you might be shocked to discover that you are more black than Obama. You guys, are a disgrace to the human kind. What do you want Obama's birth certificate for? Do you want to marry him? Sorry, not only is he taken, but he is straight.

It is funny to me that the DEMS talk about things that have already occured, McCain produced his documents, we are not all Republicans who follow Rush Limbaugh. Obama should obey the law (he is not above it). He may be the "best thing since sliced bread" but wake up or you will find yourself in another country. Is that what the DEMS who are carelessly posting wanting?

The healthcare bill will bankrupt us, if the government and others trying to send the dollar to ZERO to repay the debt this country owes. What happens then? You can guarantee that Obama will not save you then. Obama lives in a $1.4 million house in Chicago (why doesn't he give up his salary and proceeds from his books and house to you DEM posters)? Instead he is racking up legal bills that you are having to pay out of your tax money because he is covering something up like his natural born citizenship.

I for one can not afford Obama's policies. Healthcare per the CBO will do the following

An individual earning $44,000 before taxes who purchases his own insurance will have to pay a $5,300 premium and an estimated $2,000 in out-of-pocket expenses, for a total of $7,300 a year, which is 17% of his pre-tax income.

If you haven't noticed Wise Mind, Obama is Bi-Racial and there is a huge difference from being black and Bi-Racial. So, get yourself a life and stop throwing dirt on the Republican because most of us out here have a common goal. That goal is living our lives, going to work, paying taxes, abiding by the law, and trying to keep the government out of our lives, our work, our money,etc...as much as humanly possible. The current set of politicians both Democrat and Republican want to grow the government, take away your rights, and get more and more of your money, and run as much of the country as possible.

I am amazed at all the people on this thread that don't want the truth to come to light! If Obama has nothing to hide, what are you guys so afraid of, anyway?! (Such hypocrites, liars and race-card-players!!)

I recommend that everyone not vote for ANY candidate not willing to demand that Obama disclose his long-form birth certificate! 2010 elections are coming up soon, and Obama has been playing this hide-the-birth-certificate game for FAR too long....and should NOT be allowed to get away with it any longer! If we all demand that the candidates do what Rep. Deal is doing in order to get our votes, we will finally get the long-overdue TRUTH--and let the chips fall where they may!
