Conservative Party NY-23 candidate Doug Hoffman was approached last night by Watertown Daily Times reporter Jude Seymour, and asked about Rush Limbaugh's joke that Republican ex-candidate Dede Scozzafava, who dropped out and endorsed Democrat Bill Owens, was "guilty of widespread bestiality. She has screwed every RINO in the country." Hoffman laughed, and refused to condemn it.

"I don't know. I have to interpret it first. (Laughter) I don't know. That's Rush Limbaugh. I don't think I can comment to that," said Hoffman. When pressed further about whether he would denounce it, he said: "No, I don't denounce it. I just heard it this second. Do you want to read it to me again?"

When it was read again to him, Hoffman had no comment.

Rush Limbaugh is a tool and the entire country knows it. Only some are too ignorant to admit it.

Of course he is afraid to denounce Limbaugh. Rush is the de facto head of the Republican party. Hoffman would have to apologize to Rush if he disagreed with Rush's hate speech.

Defacto? He is the head of the republican party.

They are pretty much pond scum and slime - the problem is they think the same about us.

Why waste his time? This way, Hoffman wouldn't have to apologize to Rush afterwards.

Um... actually I think that's pretty funny. And he's right -by backing down to the extremists on the right she's made it next to impossible for any moderates to wrestle the party back (even a stopped clock is right twice a day). Fine by me, and probably by Rush as well.

I think this might be a little mountain making from a molehill and I hope it's not coupled with sexism -would folks react the same way if he'd made the same comment about a male cendidate?

Well, if el Gordito were talking about a male candidate, he would have used that "bend over and grab your ankles" imagery of which he's so very fond.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would. Uncalled for nastiness simply because you disagree with someone is uncalled for nastiness simply because, no matter what plumbing you have. And it's still insulting to anyone with a minimal IQ.

There are way too many open windows into Rush's psyche -- this bestiality talk, his "bend over and grab your ankles" remarks, his comments about how Obama is narcissistic and childlike and needs to have all the attention focused on him. It doesn't take a Freudian to see what's going on here.

Since when is a bestiality joke of any kind reflective of conservative values, which Hoffman claims in the interview to represent? The very fact that he danced so delicately back from any criticism of Rush suggests that this is a politician in thrall to outsiders. Disagreement and dissent, between and within political parties, has always been a cornerstone of the American political process. Anybody, from any quarter, who wields the power to cut that off at the grass roots level is a danger.

The Republicans could win on this one, but they may have a very tough time coping with the result. I suspect that Rush represents a large group of conservatives with lots of money. They may believe they are pulling the strings and guiding the effects. Rush and many of his listeners may think otherwise. It will be interesting to see what chickens come home to roost as a result of this dynamic.

Thank you.

Since when is a bestiality joke reflective of any values, conservative or otherwise?

Hoffman may win this, conservatives may gloat, but this sort of amateurish behavior by Hoffman will come back and bite him.

Media personality Rush Limbaugh makes off-color joke about female politician. Republicans: "It was just a joke! Why are you liberals always taking these things seriously? Where's your sense of humor?"

Media personality David Letterman makes off-color joke about Sarah Palin's knocked-up daughter. Republicans: "How dare he attack Sarah's family like that! What a scumbag! Boycott David Letterman!!!"

My guess is Hoffman didn't get the joke, not understanding what Rush meant by RINO or at least the (il)logic of his argument.

Hoffman doesn't come across as being able to think on his feet...repeat the statement for him? He knew what Rush had said...it's just that no one in the R. party can say anything contradictory to what Rush has said...he is their de facto leader, amen.

What I find amusing about episodes like this is that the right has been running around comparing Obama to Chairman Mao, and saying no criticism of the President will be tolerated. And yet, the Republicans really have a person they are not allowed to criticize, no matter how outrageous, stupid and vulgar his comments, and his name is Rush Limbaugh. What does it say about Republicans that they are not allowed to criticize this fat, sexist, drug addicted, vile sleezeball? (This is a rhetorical question, BTW.)

"I attribute the recent momentum of the campaign to the large infusion of cash and volunteers from Dick Armey's outside organization. Its great that people in Texas want to come to upstate New York and force a right wing nut job ideology on the voters here. The best part is that I don't even live in the district! Ha Ha Ha"

There are some things that pretty much constitute an automatic finding of libel. I would think accusing somebody of bestiality is among them.

The South believes in State's Rights unless that State is in the North, because then a Southerner needs to tell them who to elect.

This is Soviet-tyle politics. Their candidate is who is best for the Party, not who best represents the people of Upstate NY. Any chance whatsoever this guy will ever represent the people up Upstate NY in his dealing in Congress? He does not even know what they are, not even taken the time to study them before he met the press.

Hoffman is a sheep for the right wing to lead around by his nose ring. He has no thoughts of his own. He's perfect for them. They'll tell him what to do and what to say and how to act.

Those yellow teeth make me nauseous.
