For the most part, members of the media have focused on the spectacle of pranksters crashing a state dinner at the White House. But this week, we may finally get some clarity on the substantive issue underneath the gag: namely: how, exactly, Michaele and Tareq Salahi manage to slip by the Secret Service?

In a difficult to parse, but harshly worded statement, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) laid into the bureaucrats who may have been at fault, and suggested dire ramifications if it turns out they were asleep on the job.

"The intent of this Administration may be openness and transparency, but a security breakdown that allowed anyone who looked the part to walk off the street into a State Dinner is a slap in the face to the Secret Service employees who put their lives on the line to protect our form of government and its leaders," Thompson said.

Thompson will hold a hearing this Thursday, and has invited Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan, and the hoaxsters themselves, to testify. His office was not immediately available for comment.

The Secret Service has already copped to being "deeply concerned and embarrassed" by the incident. We may soon know why their faces are so red.

It honestly is hard to argue with the distinguished Gentleman...

The Secret Service acknowledges they were at fault. They slapped themselves in the face?

Party-crashing is an odd thing. I've done it to people and it's been done to me. Thing is, the crashers can turn out to be the best guests, the ones you like the most.

You can have the hosts laughing their asses off, toasting the crashers, and saying that is totally so cool that they crashed and they *made the party*! It's true.

Oh, and what they did is a textbook gag: "What in the hell do you mean we are not on the list??!" Another one is to say, "Why there were are right in front of your eyes: Mr. and Mrs. Smith, what are you blind?!! How long are we expected to stand here?!!!" I've literally crashed Embassy parties that way, no lie! But if there is any place where it should be different, I suggest the White House is one. These people are expected to take bullets to protect the President. They shouldn't have to worry that some incorrigible wise-ass like the undersigned might be bullshitting his way through. If they all eat some crow on this, even a double helping, hopefully it's much for the better. To look at that bleached blond, inches from the President's beaming face...that should frighten anybody in my humble opinion.

No kidding - it could have been a thinly-disguised Ann Coulter, setting up an assassination attempt to promote her new book.

On the subject of party-crashing, Roger Ebert recently wrote an article about a consummate crasher, Jerry Berliant, here. It's a very interesting read.

They better subpoena the Salahis' asses if they don't come when "invited" to testify.

Seriously? Congressmen are calling for them to be prosecuted on some imagined charges, and then the next day want them to testify under oath. It's madness. Of course they won't testify. That would be mad to do so.

They broke no law, and yet citizens and congress critters alike are calling for their incarceration and denial of liberty simply because they caused a bit of embarrassment. Shameful.

Yes, they did break a federal law, when they claimed to be on the guest list.

Period. End of story. It's dangerous, and it needs to be deterred and stopped now. Jail them. Confiscate every dime they make from their crime. If not jail, then 10,000 hours community service at the most desperate soup kitchens. These people need to be taught a lesson.

Anyone who's read up on The Sensational Salamis (yes I know nerd-checkers it's Salahi, give me a break) knows that bill collectors are hot on their heels. I'm sure that wouldn't mind a break from that action. Those rascally grifters

Well I hope Thompson can ante up the six-figure whore fee for face time with the American media's most fascinating big bawls couple this side of the Clintons.

Does anyone think the new Chiefette of Staff at the Whitehoues, one Suzan Sher, will be asked any questions about the guest list?
Whatever, the message to the guys in the long robes and beards is that we are weak in our secrity at the Whitehouse and Army Bases.
President Obama is asking for trouble with is inattention to details. He should ask for some help from VP Biden!

The question that needs truly answering, but won't be, is whether or not the Secret Service is underfunded and/or understaffed.

I think the Secret Service is under-competently staffed. There's no reason to cut their budget. I'm sure with all the racist, inbred, hydrocephalus headed, gun toting, yellow hammers out there it would be easy to increase their budget since "O" came into office.
