In a huge development in the NY-23 special election, moderate Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava -- who dropped out of the race yesterday, in the face of bad fundraising and polling numbers that had shown she'd lost GOP support to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman -- has now endorsed Democrat Bill Owens.

Scozzafava's campaign had been undermined by national right-wing activists who denounced her liberal social views -- she is pro-choice and pro-gay marriage -- and now she's doing what she can to prevent their own candidate Hoffman from winning:

You know me, and throughout my career, I have been always been an independent voice for the people I represent. I have stood for our honest principles, and a truthful discussion of the issues, even when it cost me personally and politically. Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; it's about the people of this District.

It is in this spirit that I am writing to let you know I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same.

Scozzafava's name remains on the ballot as the Republican candidate, but she'll be voting for the Democrat Owens. Scozzafava's full statement is available after the jump.

Late Update: Scozzafava's former campaign spokesman Matt Burns gives us this comment, breaking with his former boss: "Dede is entitled to her own opinion, as is everyone, but I obviously disagree with her decision (to support Owens). I am supporting Doug Hoffman, because denying Nancy Pelosi another foot soldier is vital to restoring fiscal responsibility and common sense in Washington."

Late Late Update: We asked NRCC spokesman Ken Spain for comment, and he simply pointed us to this statement from earlier today, which was released in order to promise a seat on the House Armed Services Committee for Hoffman if he is elected: "There are only two candidates that remain in this race and voters are interested in two things. The candidate best positioned and suited to protect Fort Drum and continue the legacy of John McHugh is Doug Hoffman as the Republican leadership pledged to secure support for him on the House Armed Services Committee earlier today. Secondly, only Doug Hoffman is willing to stand up to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and put the brakes on her agenda of massive government takeovers and less jobs."

Scozzafava released the following statement at 2 :06 p.m.:

I want to thank you for your support and friendship. Over the past 24 hours, I have had encouraging words sent to my family and me. Many of you have asked me whom you should support on Tuesday.

Since announcing the suspension of my campaign, I have thought long and hard about what is best for the people of this District, and how to answer your questions. This is not a decision that I have made lightly.

It's not in the cards for me to be your representative, but I strongly believe Bill is the only candidate who can build upon John McHugh's lasting legacy in the U.S. Congress. John and I worked together on the expansion of Fort Drum and I know how important that base is to the economy of this region. I am confident that Bill will be able to provide the leadership and continuity of support to Drum Country just as John did during his tenure in Congress.

In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first.

Please join me in voting for Bill Owens on Tuesday. To address the tough challenges ahead, we must rise above partisanship and politics and work together. There's too much at stake in this election to do otherwise.

The implosion continues.

Now, on another note, why do all these looney toons on the far, far right have that weird look in their eyes. Hoffman has that same look that Bachmann has. It's that far off, vacant, weird look. It's really unsettling.

I really, really want a legit opposition party. These repukes are scaring the sh*t out of me. What happens when the country gets pissed at the dems, like they did in 1979 and the country votes in Rambo or Newt the Nazi, or a clone of them? It's a frightening thought and could happen. Look at all the wreckage the b-movie actor left us with. You could draw a straight line from the economic implosion and the transfer of wealth to the uber rich to the b-movie actor's policies. Very frightening.

Problem is they are both dems. What happens when the people get pissed at the dems or want a "change"? We'll wind up with another looney toon like the b-movie actor that will set our country even farther behind.

I'm REALLY hoping those wingnuts will be forever marginalized into a lunatic fringe group irrelevant to the mainstream politics, and ConservaDems and Blue Dogs will team up with moderate Republicans (now nearly extinct species?) to form a viable political opposition. Otherwise -- I'm not sure if we could survive another "b-movie actor."

It will not be the first time in American politics that governmental power is concentrated in the hands of a single political party whose different factions represent the broad range of respectable political thought in the country. The first time this happened, that party controlled American politics for 60 years, and it took a civil war and the birth of a completely new party to finally drum the old one out of office. That party, in turn, cornered nearly as much of the political marketplace as the old one had, and held a secure grip on power for 72 years.

Today's Democratic Party is going to have quite a bit of breathing room.

From your mouth. I'm hoping this district in New York is a shark jump for the Greedy Old Plutocrats.

It's pretty obvious that the American electorate is becoming "Independent." Or as we say in the Golden State, "Declines to State."

So here's a pretty independent Republican, who actually gets all the other important Republicans in the area to put her up for the seat (pretty much telling you that the local Republicans are a moderate lot). She's set to replace a Republican so moderate he joined the Obama Administration. She's so mainstream Republican for the district, that The Newt! actually endorses her ...

And it seems she's too "moderate" to get that Great 28% of the population (max) who think Bush did a great job, and who want to follow the wingnuttery line down the road. {From what I can tell, this woman's moderation has to do with women's right to privacy, recognition that gay people have real "families" and so "family values."

I see a Pied Piper kind of situation, with Glen Beck out there in front, dancing around. And just behind him, but not always, I mean, Glen Beck IS bobbing and weaving and pretty much running around like a chicken with his head cut off, so sometimes in front of him, is Rush Limbaugh. This procession with Glen and Rush at its head has a line behind them with O'Reilly, and Hannity, and Armey, and Imhoff, and Bachman, holding the march's banner. On it is a slogan that means nothing but sounds really inspirational, like "I'd Rather be Right Than Right."

In a loose group following the banner are lesser, fading media lumineries. It's funny how many of these are eye-candy women like Ann, Michele and Laura who are smiling really hard and trying to attract some attention from the boys up in the big booth above the glass ceiling. Mixed closely in this loose group with the Girls on the Bus are Congressmen who run the gamut from Minority Leader John Boener (or however you spell it) to his right-hand man, whip Eric Cantor.

Oh, but I forget to mention one of the keys to the spectacle, the Drum Majorette, just behind Rush and Glen, regimented, marching briskly in her pageant walk, and always pushing hard to pass by the men blowhards, is Sarah Palin, who seemed to pull off the media win on this Moderate Killing.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, or a vision I have to focus on to make it come true (a la The Secret), I do like seeing this parade leaving town, and imaginating that none of them are never heard from again.

I posted a similar thought yesterday. I saw Lou Dobbs, rush 'the fat one'limpbaugh, LIEberman, and thought they all looked different to regular people. I know they are all repugs, so I wondered if lying caused it, or saying no all the time, or are they really a different species. I am sure that a close examination would show a resemblance to Bin Laden, to Hitler, to Judas, the taliban?. Just an observance.

Scozzafava is correct that Owens knows much more about the district than Hoffman who flubbed his media interviews. Further, if you think about it, Hoffman is behaving much like Lieberman. Neither of them could make it through their own party's nominating process -- Hoffman talked to the local Republican leaders who saw through him and instead of having the local Republican primary voters decide -- imported a ton of outside money and ran as an independent. Nancy Pelosi, fortunately has more than enough foot soldiers, so Hoffman is unlikely to make a difference in the larger scheme of things but it is clear that he is not impressive in his grasp of local issues.

Given how she was treated, Scozzafava owes the Republican party less than nothing.

If Owens wins on Tuesday, today will mark the beginning of an all-out civil war within the GOP. In the long term, this will be a good thing for the country. However, the short term is going to be very crazy and a big boost for the Democratic Party in 2010 - 2012. Presuming Obama is re-elected in 2012, the blood will flow (figuratively) in the GOP streets. It will be 2020 or 2024 before a new GOP has any chance of rising out of its current minority status. This is a very good thing.

And as was argued above, what is he going to do with that Comittee seat? Fort Drum needs to stop getting government payouts, right? So the biggest employer in the district needs to stand on its own (i.e., be closed down), so that the rich who don't live in that stressed district can get deeper tax cuts. That's what his vaunted principles direct, without question. So what is he going to do, work to accelerate the closure of Ft. Drum and put his constituents on the unemployment lines more quickly?

Anybody who cares about issues in the district can't vote for Hoffman, an outsider ideologue with no knowledge or concern as to the issues, and with spinning eyes like Bachmann.

Letters to the Watertown Times suggest that many don't care. The real issues, many declaim, are about stopping Nancy Pelosi from ruining our great country and anyway Dede is a damn traitor who obviously was a RINO all along. If these people are representative, Hoffman will have a great day and the electorate of NY 23 may be about to impale itself.
