Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has said he masterminded the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, is being transferred from the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to New York to face trial.
A Justice Department official confirmed to TPMDC that Mohammed and four other detainees being held at Gitmo will stand trial in a civilian federal court.
Attorney General Eric Holder will make the announcement today, the official told TPMDC.
The news comes as Obama is traveling to Asia and as officials tell reporters that White House counsel Greg Craig is leaving.
From the Associated Press:
Mohammed and the four others -- Waleed bin Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi and Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali -- are accused of orchestrating the attacks that killed 2,973 people on Sept. 11, 2001.Mohammed admitted to interrogators that he was the mastermind of the attacks -- he allegedly proposed the concept to Osama bin Laden as early as 1996, obtained funding for the attacks from bin Laden, oversaw the operation and trained the hijackers in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Is justice for Sheikh Mohammed best served by a civilian court or military tribunal?

Is justice for JeffB best served by having him thrown into a cage match with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Orly Taitz, both armed with blunt Bowie knives; or by having his computer wiring done by KBR so that he gets electrocuted when he checks his polls?

As a patriotic American male and a New Yorker, let me say I wet my pants when I read KSM was coming to NY. However will we protect ourselves from that big hairy meanie?! What about the children?! Think about the children!
Oh wait, isn't KSM the one who appears to be mentally ill and incapable of masterminding anything, but is a convenient patsy for the Bush/Obama Administration (there're pretty much the same thing) to pretend they're double-tough on terrorism.
And why do we even prosecute anyone for any crime? I thought Obama only wanted to look forward, not backward...

It will be interesting to see what the Intrade betting will be regarding their being found not guilty on technicalities. Is info gathered after waterboarding admissible?
Then there is just the grinding length of legal maneuvering like Moussaoui's trial. This is going to keep New Yorkers on edge and anxious for years.
Keep up the good work.

Considering that this administration has already shown a clear bent to ignore the rule of law, so what? Denying GM bondholders their rights and blowing off video of Black Panther intimidation at polling places are just two examples off the top of my head.
Meanwhile, there is law that prohibits importing terrorists into the US. That's another law ignored. Better try another argument bud.

Somehow New York survived through the trials of Ramzi Yousef and Omar Abdel-Rahman.
This is part of demonstrating to the world that we're regaining our senses and our principles.
And I'll take that Intrade bet. There's plenty of untainted evidence.

Or, there could be an "escape". Sometimes, these things happen due to "unforeseen" circumstances.
Remember, if it does happen, don't jump to any conclusions.

Oh, do you feel bullied? That's often associated with paranoia, a condition that sometimes (although rarely) presents as an irrational fear of a man confined to a maximum security cell and who would be manicled hand and foot when brought out of said cell by several armed guards who are accustomed to escorting far more physically imposing prisioners. Yes, paranoia is often associated with the wingnuttia. But I'm guessing that "delusional half wit" was probably far more apt a description.
Okay, now I'm done. TTFN!

Yeah, pigs could fly out of your butt and then magically transform into pre-Raphaelite art which gives speeches in Mayan, too.
When was the last "escape" anywhere close to the kind of magnitude you are speculating about?
I know, facts are inconvenient. You're just here to be a jerk and whip up fear. Are you being paid well?

You do make a valid point. Cheney-mandated torture-extracted false confessions of an Al Qaeda - Saddam link to justify a war that was based on fabricated intelligence may not be admissible in court.
The cell space in Guantanamo would be better used for the more dangerous war criminal, Dick Cheney. He certainly should not object to the standard of "justice" he created himself.

So, you would find the terrorists not-guilty based on your hatred of Dick Cheney?
I'm sure you are not alone. Holder is counting on it.

Wow - 30 years of Republican rule, topped off with the Bush/Cheney junta has made some of us very cynical. As I recall the guys who bombed the WTC the first time are in jail. And we treated them as the criminals they are. Ann Arbor has it correct.

Anybody with common sense knows this is a bad idea, yet BO and his boys are running full tilt at it. Holder said today, in a revealing moment, that the Feds assured him they could keep the courtroom area safe. Of course they can, and of course that is all Holder is worried about, him and his crew. What the Feds can’t secure, and neither can NYPD, is the rest of the city. The stores, the malls, the banks, the streets, the tunnels. The terrorist could simply take a hundred hostages and demand KSM be released or they’ll start killing them. This is the same reason why I apposed letting prisoners from Gitmo come here to our prisons. It makes the city around the prison a target.
