Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) raised hackles among liberals earlier this week when he claimed that the public option wasn't a part of the 2008 presidential campaign. He repeated that claim to reporters tonight, though acknowledged, when pressed, that then-candidate Barack Obama did in fact include a public option in his campaign health care proposal.
"This is a kindof 11th hour addition to a debate that's gone on for decades," Lieberman told reporters tonight. "Nobody's ever talked about a public option before. Not even in the presidential campaign last year."
I asked in response, "How do you reconcile your contention that the public option wasn't part of the presidential campaign given that all three of the [leading Democratic] candidates had something along the lines of the public option in their white papers?'
"Not really, not from what I've seen. There was a little--there was a line about the possibility of it in an Obama health care policy paper," Lieberman said.
(That line read, "Specifically, the Obama plan will: (1) establish a new public insurance program, available to Americans who neither qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP nor have access to insurance through their employers, as well as to small businesses that want to offer insurance to their employees," and went on from there.)
I said, "And at the time Senator Clinton, and John Edwards also had..."
"Edwards probably had it more than anybody else," Lieberman said. "But Clinton, Obama, McCain--I don't see it. Anyway, I'm opposed to it."

Yes, I'm a day late to this post and you are probably no longer lurking around this particular column, so I'll consider this a rhetorical question:
Exactly what is it that you respect in him? An answer to that would be most instructive.
The man obviously respects nobody or no thing other than his personal power and aggrandizement — certainly cares not one whit about fellow human beings — so to find which thread of reasoning or conscience anyone else would find respectable is a true guage of character.

And when you're done playing comment section stalker,
If that's your name for calling out the repeated falsehoods our own resident Joe Lieberman sockpuppet spews forth in these threads, then fine, I happily plead guilty. At one point one could believe that FreepRider was simply sadly and tragically misinformed. That the Freeper continues to spew such shit in the face of copious contrary evidence leads to only two possible conclusions: Freeper's complete divorce from reality or a campaign of deliberate lying reminiscent of the best of the Bush-Cheney cabal.
As for you, your agenda has been quite transparent to anyone who has read your posts for any length of times: to defend the Emanuel ("Raaaaaaahm!") administration (and by extension the DLC corporate wing of the Democratic Party) from any criticism from people who actually understand and care about what ordinary people, rather than banksters and corporate CEOs, are going through; to undermine any Democrat, in or out of office, who seeks to move the party leftward (leftward to, let's say, the policies of Richard Nixon), and to vent your considerable spleen on the "netroots" whom you hold in such obvious contempt. And so you shill for the DLC/corporate wing of the party -- the wing that brought us such lovely gifts as NAFTA, WTO, outsourcing/exporting of jobs, media dereg and ensuing predictable consolidation of media power in the hands of a few giant megacorporations; financial deregulation and the repeal of Glass-Steagall, and assorted other time bombs that continue to go off in the midst of the American populace. FYI, I fully support the public option.
I have said that the words "public option" never escaped Obama's lips during two years of campaigning. Yes, it was mentioned ONCE in ONE paper but that does not count as *campaigning* on the public option.
To date, NO ONE has been able to find one instance where Obama ever talked about a public option in 30 debates, hundreds of campaign events and interviews.
Period.

What you claim to support is not the point. The point is that your claims about Obama, the 08 campaign, and whether or not he campaigned on the public option are substantially identical to Lying Joe's -- and they are just as false as Lying Joe's.
Um, no. What you said was: "They're claiming he's breaking a campaign promise by not getting a public option. Obama NEVER campaigned on a public option."
You then proceeded to redefine "campaign" to mean "talk about it in campaign speeches", thus moving the goalposts to suit your agenda of making excuses for the Emanuel administration.
This redefinition is a cute bit of rhetoric, and suits your goals, but it's a red herring.
First the specific term "public option" may or may not have even been coined during the campaign, so it's very cute of you to try to send people chasing after specific words in campagn speeches, even though the policy plank clearly existed.
Second, and more important, you know damn well that Obama wasn't big on specifics in his campaign speeches. Obama received frequent criticism for the lack of specifics in those campaign speeches.... and when he did, the (correct) response from supporters (myself included) was quite consistent: It's all there on the campaign website. And, indeed, it was. Which is why you can't now come back and change the rules and say "just having it on the website doesn't count as campaigning." You can create your own reality all you want, as Ron Suskind famously reported about the way the Bush White House conducted itself, but the rest of us who remain in the reality-based community will know it's bunk.
Oh, so what was there on that website? This:
Pretty detailed for something he wasn't really campaigning on, I'd say. Who knew that a Presidential campaign would include so much detail on something they ... y'know... don't intend to make a part of the, y'know, campaign, in documents on the, y'know, campaign website?
" [M]entioned ONCE in ONE paper", my ass.
And if he wasn't campaigning on it, he sure fooled the press at the time (h/t Media Matters):
Links to stories in original.
Keep on creating your own reality, FreepRider. And welcome to the Lieberman club.

Oh, I get it. "New public plan" != "public option", in FreepRider's reality. MediaMatters, NYT, WaPo, ChiTrib are all wrong, and FreepRider's right. In FreepRider's reality. That highly detailed description of the "new public plan" (Obama's words) on the Obama campaign website, which I quoted verbatim, doesn't qualify because it doesn't use the exact words "Public Option." It might walk, quack, act, and swim like a "Public Option" but if those exact words didn't cross Obama's lips and get written down somewhere, it didn't happen.
Riiiiight. The reality-based community ain't buyin' it, bub.

Is she more smug and uninformed than Rape-Gurney Joe?
Just curious - looking for a frame of reference.

There isn't a "scarcity economy" shortage of smug and uninformed. There is enough for both Garafolo and the person you name.
When Air America was available in my area I listened to it. Seder and Garafolo are among the worst offenders of those who sit and smugly make pronouncements about the 1960s, and the 1960s Left -- about which they are uninformed, and invariably at best off-the-mark.
And it gets really bad when the avowed "Leftists" they are repeat right-wing smears against the Left as if not only true but also true and from the Left. The only thing worse than that I can think of is the Left's adoption of the far-right anti-gov't/American conspirabunk about 9/11 being an "inside job" planned and executed by the gov't.
It's fundamental: the far-right has always opposed gov't/We the people are the gov't/the Left is traditionally pro-gov't. Those who don't know that fundamentsal, so don't know what they're talking about? We see the "Leftist" purists bash even "leftists" when pragmatism intervenes between their naive idealism and reality.

Lieberman has some unmentioned ace in the hole for his life when he leaves the Senate and that's what he's protecting.

nooc,
So when an article is written showing Joe Lieberman lying through his teeth about both Obama and Hillary (yeah, like she's ever been for health care reform, as if) your response is to completely ignore Joe's lies and instead throw random insults and smears and instead attack the posters here who are angry at being lied to by elected representatives. No wonder you post in triplicate, trying to make up for having nothing to say.
In debating terms, you do current Republicans proud for at least showing up. Compared to more civil society, or to thinking adults, you rather come across as a douche who asks others to behave in a way you repeatedly fail to do yourself.

Good gravy!!!...I just did a fact check on factcheck. BO was chairman of the Board of Directors of the Annenberg Foundation, which appears to be the primary funding source for factcheck.
The game is afoot.

Speaking truth to power? Yeah, Obama was/is a part of that. Aren't you proud?
Lieberman pushed a public health plan when he was running for president. Go figger.
Joe's a tool, bought and paid for, likely, but most certainly an attention whore. He's out of excuses as far as his constituents are concerned, so don't get too attached to the lout.
Connecticut will be electing two new Senators as soon as they get the chance to. Enough already with the entitlement behavior. Joe has forgotten who he works for, and it ain't clueless out-of-state right-wingnuts. Although that's who he hired to help him start his "Party of Joe"

Then you can't read, either. Obama was never President of the Board of the Annenberg Foundation nationally. He was involved with one of their projects in education in Chicago.
And while we are at it, when Obama said over and over that he wanted every American to have the same healthcare that Congress has - and ran on that proposal in his materials and debated on it with everyone - what exactly did you think he meant? It was pretty clear to anyone paying attention that it would have to be publicly funded and administered, regardless of whether it was called a "public option".

Although I certainly have enjoyed our time together, and the vitriol some of you offer instead of substance, I need to spend my time doing research, and planning the 2010 party when the losers in Washington, who won't bend to the will of the people, find themselves skipping down the road on their collective behinds.

The will of the people:
An overwehlming majoriity wants health cinsurance reform and
A public option.
Yo, pinhead (I flatter, which means I lie in your favor: you don't actually have a head, of any size): you are a hateful, deluded member of a statistically insignificant minority. Go back to your Neo-Nazi brethren and brag to them about how you "kicked ass" by spewing your delusions as if clever talking points.

Name the winning candidate you can't wait to get behind? Oh that's right you can't because all the GOP incumbents are just as badly positioned as their counterparts who lost in 2008. Don't spend too much money on those conga dance lessons. You may not get your chance to be the "life of the party."

I guess I get his point. the public option wasn't in the forefront of the debate as it is now during the campaign. Still, he doesn't have a case, and he's just the most annoying little retard on the planet.
One must wonder what his motive is. Who is his master? Oh right, his wife's employers.

"Anyway, I'm opposed to it." Might as well say: "I don't care what the actual facts are, or how many times you show that I've misstated them." He's bought and paid for. I suggest he be ignored by those of us with better things to do than arguing with a door knob.

Follow up question needed to be: "You don't see it? Or are you willfully ignoring that public option was part of Obama plan, or that universal healthcare has often been part of Democratic platform in the party he was a member of for many, many years? How do you expect Americans and the citizens of the state of Connecticut to believe that?"

Perhaps it's time more of us started confronting our very own Joe Lieberman with those selfsame facts.
So far only Indie Pro has done that consistently AFAICT.
