Rush Limbaugh may have crossed another line today in his anti-Obama rhetoric -- openly joking (at least, we hope he's joking) about a military coup.

Limbaugh noted that President Obama will be delivering his upcoming speech on Afghanistan, from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

"My question is: Will they detain him?" said Limbaugh. "Hopefully."

Not that I'm defending what Rush said by any means, but there was a film out a few years ago called "The Assassination of George W. Bush". The Left can get nasty too.

We can be relieveed, of course, that the Bushit criminal enterprise wasn't Left; it was far-RIGHT. The "Left" -- as you hope -- made a film which hurt no one: such freedom of speech should be outlawed.

But the saintly Bushit criminal enterprise, because torture is wrong, turtured ALLEGED torturers in order to reduce the incidence of torture.

And over 100 of those tortured -- without the bother of finding them guilty of anything -- died as consequence, a number of those found to be MURDER.

But let's wring our hands, weep, and whine about a film made in Britain.

And while we're at it, let's be intellectually dishonest, also, by condemning Clinon for being not guilty of perjury.

ANYTHING to distract from the commission of war crimes by the thugs you admire and defend on the most depraved of grounds.

Reagan wouldn't be dissing the military so that potential analogy fails. The liberal equivalent would be hoping Regan be detained by Sen. Pat Schroeder's vagina. ("I have a vagina and I know how to use it.")

But as always context is everything. Just before the joke was a segment where a caller described the White House fury at the snipers killing the pirates to save the captured Captain, and retaliating by charging Seals who just captured the guy who killed and mutilated the four Blackwater employees in Fallujah. The charge is giving the terrorist a fat lip in the process of capture.
Limbaugh's joke is nothing compared to that travesty.

By the way - what did Reagan do during World War II? I'll tell you...he acted in the movie "Bedtime for Bonzo".

Cadets attempting to "detain" the President would certainly earn adverse UCMJ action under Articles 81, 88, 91, 94, 97 and most likely Articles 133 and 134 as well.

Only a blind and willful partisan could characterize incitement to such action as a "joke." But it is certainly understandable that such comments would come from people who lack the courage of their own convictions and will not act thereon, and instead attempt to induce others to do their dirty work for them.

Translation: Limbaugh and Shooter haven't got the nuts to do it themselves, so they express a wish for others to do it for them.

If "patriots" of that sort had been the rule in 1770s North America, we'd be watching cricket and drinking tea today, not watching football and drinking beer.

Lets put The Lump and Obama out on the West Point obstacle course for a mano-e-mano test! Cameras rolling, both of them wired for sound...

I'd bet the odds in London betting parlors, against The Lump finishing the first fifty yards, would be pretty high. All the oxy's in the world couldn't propel that tub of lard over the first hurdle.

It would certainly be a worldwide viewed event!

But then we'd have to see ol' Lump in gym shorts, it might be too much to handle...

Trivial, yes...
Childish, of course,
Likely? Not likely...
But wouldn't it be great!

We have a paper, here in Boston, called the Herald. It's a Rupert Murdoch style tabloid that resorts to those kind of headlines to attract passersby to buy their rag. The paper depends on single issue sales, not subscriptions, so the otherwise uninterested need a sharp hook to get them to pick up the paper. Before I consider reading a TPM article, I have already made the decision and effort to go to the TPM page. I am an interested reader, and don't need that hook to get me to read their writing.

Politics and those that follow it are like sports and those that follow a sport. One can watch, comment, scream, celebrate during a game. Similarly, you can follow an election or issue as it is going on. In either case, you can check in when the game/controversial issue or election is over and see what happened. In either case do the fans/politicos make a difference? No. But it is what people want to do.

I could be agitated about the next NFL game or the health care debate but probably have the same ability to affect either. Yet, I come here, read, and comment from time to time. I find it interesting and even intellectually stimulating at times. Maybe the latter part IS different from sports. Also, I am informed at cocktail parties.

I do think Limbaugh's escalation in rhetoric, bordering on treason, is prompted by some real panic on his part that the rest of us aren't seeing the reason for.

He's not just into grabbing headlines--his vile statements are really prayers for some kind of overthrow of this government, as he cannot see any democratic method of ousting them from power (his real dream). He's just hoping someone will catch his drift and act on it.

"... the rest of us aren't seeing the reason for." You said it. The gap is so wide that we (and they) just don't get each other. We can only speculate on each other's motivations, and analyze what our opponents do and say with real wonder. How could Obama get elected in the first place? How could Palin be so stupid? How come the USA has not already risen up in violent revolution? How could anyone listen to Limbaugh without a gun to their head?

You can call it left/right, or GOP/dem, or smart/dumbass, or crazy/sane, but that's not right, we don't have a name for this. But when we say "fat, dumbass, treasonous teabagging kooks" and they say "islamo-fascist terrorist-hugging traitors" we all seem to know who we are talking about. Did you ever think you would miss Goldwater's brand of republicanism? Or even Nixon's? It's quaint. An honest desire for small government, on it's own merits? What Nixon thought of as a dirty trick? And what he got busted for? It's a far cry from where they are headed now.

TPM is the home of snark, clucking and head shaking, but this is serious stuff, and I'm afraid we are going to wish someday that we took them more seriously.

Isn't what Limbaugh said an incictment to commit an act of treason?

an incictment to commit an act of treason?

It would seem the law must read
"Only under a Republican President..yada yad yada..."

Limpbaugh's rhetoric tends to match the mood of his worst wingnut listeners, who foment loudly on the air while the rest of the dittoheads watch like willing witnesses to a public beating by a bunch of bullies.

Obama's popularity remains very strong among his core base, any erosion has occurred around the edges, and that's not enough for the likes of The Lump.

Makes you wonder if there's some crazy General out there in dittoland, obsessed with precious bodily fluids, who might take The Lump seriously.

I agree, this is something that would have at least got his name tattooed on the no-fly list, under Bush. And might have spawned a "visit" by men in trenchcoats and sunglasses.

When does infotainment become incitement?

Similarly, when does infotainment break the rules of free speech?

Here's a question for all the students of the Civil War who might want to participate in a little thought provocation;

What would Gen. Tecumseh Sherman have thought of the likes of The Lump?

Some available quotes..
“If I had my choice I would kill every reporter in the world but I am sure we would be getting reports from hell before breakfast.”

They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all there would be news from Hell before breakfast.”

My favorite, especially considering the likes of Cheney, Rove and The Lump, even W...

“It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.”

“In our Country . . . one class of men makes war and leaves another to fight it out.”

And as for these wingnuts literally hijacking the Republican Party;
“Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”

Let em' have it!

Did anyone else see that PBS documentary, in the late 90s, about Limbaugh? It revealed that he experimented with homosexuality in his teenage years. I can't seem to locate a copy of that doc. But I wish someone would revisit that part of his life. It's only fair that a gay-basher who experimented with gay sex should be disclosed, no?
