MoveOn is serious about opposing Senate Democrats who join Republicans to block health care reform, announcing yesterday that they've built up over $3.5 million in pledges to fund primary challenges against any of them.

While no specific Senator is mentioned, it should be noted that Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), who is up for re-election in 2010 and is currently facing a tough race, could find herself becoming a top target of this push from the left.

MoveOn also has a petition that it is asking members to sign: "If ANY member of the Democratic Caucus joins a Republican filibuster of healthcare reform with a public option, the Caucus must immediately strip that Senator of all Committee Chairmanships."

The full e-mail from MoveOn is available after the jump.

Dear MoveOn member,

$3,578,117!

That's how much progressives pledged this week to fund primary challenges against any Democratic senator who blocks an up-or-down vote on health care reform with a public option.
It's a huge sum, and the clearest signal yet that any Democrat who helps Republicans filibuster health care reform will face an enormous backlash from the grassroots.

Here's another way to make sure conservatives think twice before joining with Republicans: Many of these senators hold coveted committee chairmanships that give them significant power within the Senate.

Our friends at Democracy for America have launched an open letter urging Senate Democrats to strip committee chairmanship from any Democrat who filibusters health care. Will you join in? Clicking below adds your name:

The message of the letter is simple. It says, "If ANY member of the Democratic Caucus joins a Republican filibuster of healthcare reform with a public option, the Caucus must immediately strip that Senator of all Committee Chairmanships."

In the Senate, the majority caucus has control over who chairs committees. Committee chairmanships are highly coveted because the chairperson has a lot of power over which bills get considered and what's in them.

But chairing a committee is a privilege, not a right. So if a member of the Democratic Caucus joins with Republicans on the most important vote in a generation, then they certainly don't deserve a position of power controlled by Democrats. The Democratic Caucus needs to make that clear to its members.

The fact that 66,000 MoveOn and Democracy for America members pledged more than $3.5 million to a primary challenge makes clear just how angry they'd be with any Democrat who helps Republicans doom health care reform. But as conservative Democrats decide what they're going to do, they should know that it's not just the grassroots they'd have to worry about if they filibuster, but also their colleagues.

I signed up and donated. Roadblockers to HRC reform need to leave Congress with our blessings!

A primary challenge just means a Republican will just win the seat. Why not offer to buy her vote for $1M? It seems to be for sale afterall...

Interesting proposition. I have been thinking the same thing. If Lincoln and Lieberman are such whores that they will vote with whomever pays them the most then we should just pay them a little more than the insurance companies and be done with it.

Exactly and it won't be the first time progressives have shot themselves in the face. I agree that it would be better for us to buy their votes if they are up for sale to the highest bidder.

you should check your math before jerking your knee.

but more to the point, progressives wouldn't be shooting themselves in the foot if a caucus member who filibusters with the republicans against the caucus (on an issue that is not only central to the agenda of the caucus but also enjoys broad support among that member's own constituents) is replaced by a republican. any member who joins a republican filibuster against health care reform (that's already watered down) is of no use to the caucus let alone progressives.

But wait.......you've been telling us for a week now that it's the GOP that's tearing itself apart in an ideological civil war

if this were about ideological purity, progressives would be primarying dems who don't support single payer.

even the house bill is a watered down public option package. it was watered down to appease moderates in the caucus. if conservative dems don't want to vote for it, fine. but there's no room in the caucus for dems who work work with republicans to prevent that vote from even happening.

why people here seem so intent on keeping those folks in the caucus is beyond me. it's as if y'all care more about how many members are in the caucus than you do about what kind of policy the caucus is able to deliver with those numbers.

I am one of those who pledged - and will give more if necessary. Take this seriously.

1. Are they threatening to spend this money on anyone who votes for the "trigger"?

2. Seriously folks this number should be at least 10x this amount to make a big difference. And yes it's the threat that counts. These people are total cowards.

For 3 mill we could by Lieberman, Lincoln and Nelson in one fell swoop. Seems sensible to me.

I didn't pledge much, but I wanted to offer a realistic number I could actually put up when this goes through. Everyone should be on this...Keeping their seats is all most of these critters care about anyway, so this may just be a good way of forcing what the majority wants down their throats.
