Gov. David Paterson (D-NY), who has faced intense pressure within the Democratic Party to not run for a full term in 2010 -- reportedly including the Obama administration itself -- has now launched two new TV ads, as sure a sign as any that he's not giving up.

Polls currently show him losing in a landslide against potential Republican nominee Rudy Giuliani. He would also lose the Democratic primary by an even greater margin against a possible challenge from state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

In one ad, Paterson himself speaks to the camera: "Some say I shouldn't be running for governor." He says this is because he's forced state legislators to cut the deficit, has asked for concessions from unions, and wanted big corporations to pay their share in taxes. "It might have been easier if all I thought about was running for governor," says Paterson, "but I think it's more important to do what's right for the people of New York."

The other ad talks about Paterson's blindness -- and says that he has learned to listen. The announcer also acknowledges that Paterson's time in office has not been perfect: "And when you become governor, you learn you will make mistakes. But in the depths of an historic recession, you take what you have learned and have the strength to do what's right for the people of New York."

Cuomo, or someone, MUST run for the nomination for the Dems to stand a chance keeping the governorship. Otherwise it will be exactly the same thing as here in NJ - no one here could stand Corzine, including most Dems. It was obvious months ago he should have dropped out and let Cory Booker run. But politicians' egos are just too big to ever think about anyone besides themselves. Now we're stuck with Christie - and no one likes him either. NY will be stuck with the Republican if Paterson doesn't get shoved out.

It would have been nice to see Cory run. However, Newark really needs him.

If you truly think it's important to do what you think is right for the people of New York, don't run for re-election.

He needs to talk more smack about New Jersey. I've never seen him in better form than when he trashes the Garden State.

Is this guy delusional? He never actually won the governor's office and he's been unpopular almost the entire time he's been in that office. Cuomo should just jump in regardless of what this guy does. And no, it's not because Paterson is black..it's because nobody likes him and would vote for Guiliani over him in a heartbeat even though they don't like Giuliani either.

I hope he's just setting himself up for a graceful departure from the stage, giving the impression that he put up a fight but the support just wasn't there rather than looking like he caved to the WH and Dem establishment without even throwing a punch or two. This guy should take a lesson from the recent mayoral race. People like Bloomberg and think he's doing an OK and he only won by 5. How does this guy think he even stands a chance?

"Some say I shouldn't be running for governor."

Some would be 100% correct. Do what's right. Don't run.

Those "some" you speak of include the voters of New York, by an overwhelming margin.

Wonder if there's any big petition drive ongoing to urge Cuomo to run? I'm not a big fan of MoveOn or Kos, but if they (or other group capable of organizing this sort of thing well) do a petition campaign I would definitely sign.

Every politician has big ego (otherwise they wouldn't be able to be up there and survive) so I don't blame Paterson for that. It's the combination of big fat ego and sheer stupidity that is the worst.

I never understood why Patterson was unpopular.

Halliburton and Natural gas have moved into New York promising to bring industry on a par with mountain-top removal, with major air pollution, major methane pollution, radon contamination of air and water -- your basic horror story, endorsed by the democratic party.

Unbelievable! (When democrats go bad, they go real bad.)

He at least Paterson made the DEC examine natural gas in the state. The democratic legislature and Tom West wanted to hand NY to the natural gas industry on a silver platter. Paterson said no -- I credit him for this.

NY is facing the biggest environmental debacle in its history. TPM has been silent. The Times has been virtually silent (but for two recent editorials) Andrew Cuomo has been persona non grata as landsmen came and tricked and connived their way into basically stealing land from farmers.

I don't know, but as an upstate New Yorker I am underwhelmed by Cuomo. I want to make up bumper stickers saying "Where is Andrew?"

Could someone tell me what mistakes Paterson has made other than being in office during a major recession?

Why is TPM reporting him as a liability w/o giving any reasoning besides pole numbers? It reminds me of how NPR handled Gore before the election Gore won.

Where's the substance here?
