A new poll of Minnesota by St. Cloud State University finds that Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a potential Republican candidate for president in 2012, would lose his Democratic-leaning home state to President Obama if the election were held today.

The numbers: Obama 49%, Pawlenty 40%, with a ±5% margin of error.

In 2008, Obama beat John McCain in Minnesota by 54%-44%. As the Star-Tribune notes, Pawlenty received less than 50% of the vote in each of his two elections as governor. He won 44% of the vote in a three-way race in 2002, and in 2006 he narrowly edged out his Democratic opponent by a 47%-46% margin.

Not only Pawlenty but any other thug who runs. Other than 22% of this country, who would vote for these idiots. They ruined this country before and they will do it again in a heartbeat

The only reason that Pawlenty was ever elected governor is because of the jack-ass third-party we have here - the "Independence" party. Head to head, Pawlenty loses, even to the lack-luster DFL candidates that have run.

Pawlenty is as autocratic as Bush was--his attitude with the Legislature is "my way or the highway", and he's untrustworthy. He would agree with things with the Legislative leaders behind closed doors, then turn around and do the opposite of what he'd said. He has absolutely no intention to ever compromise--it's gotta be his way.

Somebody smart, 'splain this to me: if there's a ±5% margin of error, and we take 5 from Obama and give it to Pawlenty, how does "Obama .... beat Pawlenty" as the headline declares?

Because this is how we talk about polls. If you took five away from Pawlenty and gave it to Obama, it would be Obama 54 to 36.

Now, is the gap within the margin of error? Yes. But it would be pretty absurd to take every poll and subtract the MOE from one and add it to the other.

This doesn't surprise me. If a poll showed Obama beating Haley Barbour in MS or Bobby Jindal in LA that would surprise me.
