A new Des Moines Register poll finds that Sarah Palin is an unpopular figure in Iowa -- but she's popular where it counts for the 2012 primary season, with the state's Republican voters.

Among Iowans overall, only 37% have a favorable view of Palin, and she has an unfavorable rating of 55%. Among Republicans only, however, she's in very good territory at 68%-24%. In a way, this is a microcosm of where she is nationally -- loved by the Republican base, disliked by the overall population.

"With those kind of numbers, if she were to become a candidate, while it's not a sure thing, she would be starting out in a very good position," said Iowa Republican strategist David Roederer, who ran John McCain's 2008 campaign in the state.

Barack Obama carried Iowa by 54%-45%, a swing away from a 50%-49% George W. Bush win in 2004. Palin seems to have a decent foundation for the Republican caucus, but might have trouble in the general election.

Can't we just revisit Palin in a year or so? Please?

An example of why Palin won't be a problem a year from now!

This post cuts to the bone of Palin's methods of lies and deception!

Look, there's no real argument but that she is expected to lose badly in a general election in Iowa and everyplace else except Oklahoma, Utah, some of Mountain West. So the issue is not whether Iowans in general are so totally stupid as to support her -- they obviously are not and you don't need to report much about that. The issue is whether she'll likely get nominated by the crazy Talibangelical stub that is the rural Republican Party of Iowa, and her chances are *great* with them. So she goes from victory there, sucks in a tolerable loss in New Hampshire, and then another victory with the ruralist, anti-intellectual curmudgeons of S.Carolina's Republican Party and she's a good ways toward the nomination.

Will she win the election? No more than Glenn Beck will.

The Republican right wing in Iowa isn't just rural, there's been a great growth in the mega fundamentalist churches in the cities and suburbs of the state as well as shown by how well Allen Keyes did in Linn County (Cedar Rapids) in 2000. Palin will have a lot of competition from Huckabee (and Churck Norris)) if she runs for this part of the party.

I hope the wingnut crazies manage to hijack the GOP and nominate Palin in '12. Then we could at last demonstrate once and for all how marginalized the Palin/Beck segment of society is. Palin fails to appreciate that her celebrity isn't entirely--or even mostly--due to popularity. It's a function of the public love for trainwrecks and controversy. She has no more chance of becoming president than Kate Gosselin or Lindsay Lohan.

It's not just that - like the teabaggers and the rest of the far-right movements, she doesn't get that even if you have the support of 20 million people, that's still only ~15% of the electorate. And everyone else isn't persuadable, they think you're nuts.

My home state is Iowa, so it is no surprise to me to see the same state that lit Obama's victory fuse also be the home of the opposing ideology.

When you consider this is the state that spawned Steve King, it is no surprise someone like Palin would find traction.

I'll be surprised if Palin actually wins the caucus, but unless someone much more compelling arises soon, Palin may have a pretty easy course navigating through the caucus corn.

With that in mind, I agree with jenesq, A Palin/Beck ticket would be a sure winner among a small minority.

Palin/King 2012? Be still my heart.

Palin's really jumping off the political train and onto the Pop Culture train. She needs a talk show, not a political office, that is where she belongs.

But it would be so good, to see Palin at the top of the Republican ticket, a dream really and historic. This would ensure that President Obama win reelection by the largest margin of votes, percentage and Electoral votes in US history. woohoo!!

The MSM's connivance in the increasingly threadbare pretense that Palin could possibly survive the scrutiny and pressure of a presidential campaign has gone from bemusing to downright laughable. Woman would self-destruct before Super Tuesday and probably before Iowa. She knows it, the MSM knows it, everyone but the twenty six percenters knows it. They're just allowing her to work her scam because she makes for good "content"--simplistic, bumpersticker soundbites and are chock-full of delicious, ratings-enhancing conflicty goodness. She is to politics as Cheetos are to nutrition and pornstars are to actors.

Maybe there really is a super-secret "liberal media" cabal...because the surest way to get President Obama re-elected by a landslide would be to encourage a Palin campaign.
