The new CNN poll has mixed news for President Obama and the Democrats on health care, with a plurality against the health care bill that just passed the House -- but their reasons vary, coming from both the right and the left.

The poll found 46% in favor of the bill, with 49% against it, with a ±3% margin of error.

"Roughly one in three Americans opposes the House bill because it is too liberal, but one in 10 oppose the bill because it is not liberal enough," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "That may indicate that a majority opposes the details in the bill, but also that a majority may approve of the overall approach taken by House Democrats and President Obama."

In addition, President Obama's approval rating remains in good territory, with 55% approving to 42% disapproving. The poll also gives the Democrats a continued lead in the generic Congressional ballot, with a 49%-43% lead over Republicans among registered voters.

I'd like to know what the objections are for those who are opposed - are they against a "government take-over" of health care, or "death panels" that aren't even in the bill? If people are told that 20 million Americans will now be insured, or that they can't be dropped for pre-conditions or because they lose their job, are they still against the bill?

If nothing else, this poll illustrates that apart from Obama's address in September, the Dems have done a very poor job of selling health reform. The Republicans and Conservadems need to portrayed for what they are - tools of the insurance industry that has already wrecked our health care system, and they need to go to the people and explain - Republicans are against protecting people with pre-conditions, that they are against expanding coverage to 20 - 30 additional Americans, and that the Republicans raised the same objections to Medicare and Social Security that they raise now.

I see Eric still fails at reporting polls.

Listen here: 46%-49% with a 3% margin of error is not a "plurality" for anything. It's a tie. It means that if you were to do this poll again under the exact same conditions and asking the exact same questions, you could very well end up with getting 47%-47%. And this isn't even taking into account crosstabs to take into account demographic factors so that the sample actually represents the American public rather than merely representing Americans with land line phones who happened to be in the house when the pollster called (it should be noted that if CNN weighted for any such demographics, it isn't evident based on the actual poll report).

I can't believe I'm saying this, but CNN's headline is more accurate than TPM's. CNN merely reports "Americans Split on Health Care Reform."

What Xantar said. Plus, we might ask ourselves why an additional ambiguous poll, when the track record of pollsters measuring the policy details of the health bill has been scattered, gets treated as news in the first place.

I wonder what roll the Stupak amendment plays in this. I can hardly say I support the bill with that toxic mess in there.

And ABC's polling out today shows the opposite with 53% supporting the PO, 43 opposing it. That number goes up even more if the question is if the PO is available only to people who do not receive insurance through an employer, or through the existing Medicare or Medicaid programs. It goes to 72% supporting it, 28% opposing.

So forgive me if I don't buy CNN's numbers and the premise of this article.

Those 10 percent who oppose it due to it not being liberal enough do NOT oppose it. Ask them this question - "this or nothing", they say "this." Ask the others, they say "nothing." Therefore, the truth is that 56 percent of the people want this bill to pass. There it is - right there - in black and white. The people want it. So get it done.

Why is this so hard to understand?

Most people don't even know what is in the bill.

Polling is allegedly Eric's strength. It's not McJoan's bread & butter at Kos. Yet the amount of detail on her piece on the ABC/WaPo poll and Eric's on the CNN is pretty night and day:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/11/17/805360/-WaPo-ABC-Poll:-Public-Option-Still-More-Popular-than-Overall-Reform

Grant, she has her headline and takeaway to hit the positive while Eric is in the Drudge Jr. mode we all know and loathed from his 2008 General Election "The Sky Is Falling!!!" Poll articles.
