Poll: Public Wants Congress To Keep Working On Health Care
A new CNN poll has mixed news for the health care bill, with a total of 59% saying that Congress should continue to work on it. However, only 26% said the current bills should be passed with only minor changes, with 33% saying major changes should be made. Only 24% said to start over on new bills, and only 15% said to pass no bill at all.

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will sign at 11 a.m. ET the Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009, extending unemployment benefits and other aid in the recession. He will depart the White House at 2:20 p.m. ET, and will visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center at 2:35 p.m. ET. He will arrive back at the White House at 4:15 p.m. ET. He will meet at 4:25 p.m. ET with Congressman-elect Bill Owens (D-NY), and will meet at 5:10 p.m. ET with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Biden's Day Ahead
Vice President Biden will spend the day in Wilmington, Delaware. In the morning, he will participate in a national security meeting via videoconference. In the afternoon, he will speak by phone with members of the House of Representatives, about health insurance reform. He will also receive briefings on the developments at Fort Hood.

Unemployment Rate Tops 10 Percent
The unemployment rate has reached 10.2%, according to the new Labor Department statistics, the first time it has reached double-digits since 1983. The economy lost 190,000 jobs in October, less than the 219,000 loss in September, but more than the 154,000 lost in August.

Will Cornyn's 'Big Tent' Strategy Collapse?
CQ reports that NRSC chairman John Cornyn (R-TX) faces challenges from the right in his efforts to pursue a "big tent" strategy and recruit moderate candidates. "He's trying to find candidates who can win. I'm trying to find people who can help me change the Senate," said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC). "To think we can grow the party by picking people who are more liberal and don't share our core values doesn't make any sense."

Poll: Economic Concerns On The Rise
The new CNN poll also finds an increased concern among Americans about the economy, with 47% of respondents saying the economy is the most important issue, up six points from August. Health care is second place with 17%, followed by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

DeMint Drops Holds Against Obama Nominees, After White House Shifts Course On Honduras
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) has released his holds on two White House nominees to deal with foreign policy in South America, following White House assurances that it would respect the upcoming elections in Honduras, which are being held in the shadow of the recent coup against leftist President Manuel Zelaya. "Thanks to the Obama administration's welcome reversal, the new government sworn into office next January can expect the full support of the United States and I hope the entire international community," said DeMint.

In this instance, size doesn't matter.

Ask a stupid question ....

"However, only 26% said the current bills should be passed with only minor changes"

How can you pass the "current bills"? They are substantially different and only one will make the cut. The question could easily lead someone who in fact favors one of the bills to say no if they don't like a different one (ie. Finance). Many people could reasonably conclude that the good parts of several bills should be merged.

I wish they would start asking a followup question, "Do you think the current bills do too much or to little?", and ask if their objuction is merely because they are Republican or anti-abortion. They might also ask if the respondent had read even the 10 page summary, let alone the actual bill.

Obama admin respecting upcoming elections is a "reversal"?

More like they refused to play ball with DeMented's coup d'etat friends.

What's missed here (or perhaps just minimized) is the fact that DeMento has been obstructing foreign policy just to make political points. Why does he get a pass on that?

No, they did backtrack. The position last week was that in return for restoring Zelaya to power to finish out his term, the US would recognize the November elections. The coup regime has now said it will not restore Zelaya, but the US i still saying it will recognize the elections.

I was skeptical about whether the original deal was a good one because even if Zelaya had been restored immediately, it is hard to see how you could have a fair campaign in such a short time. What we've got now is an unmitigated disaster: the US is effectively recognizing the coup.

"To think we can grow the party by picking people who are more liberal and don't share our core values doesn't make any sense."

unless you bother to recognize that the current size of your party is representative of the number of people who actually share your "core values."

The CNN poll is useless. It is one of the most atrociously thought-out questions I have ever seen.

The question:
"As you may know, several health care bills have been passed by committees in the U.S. House and
Senate and they can be brought before Congress for debate and a final vote at any time. Which of
the following do you think Congress should do:
* Continue working on those bills this fall and make relatively minor changes before passing final legislation
* Continue working on those bills this fall but pass final legislation only if major changes are made
* Start work on entirely new bills that would not be ready until some time next year
* Stop working on any bills that would change the country's health care system
* Other
* No opinion"

"Those bills" means absolutely nothing; at the very least there's six Democratic bills, not to mention the Republican bill.

By phrasing it as "those bills" rather than asking about specific bills, all they're getting is a question about whether or not people think there needs to be reform. And the answer they got is that 84% of the public thinks reform is needed. The breakdown of that 84% is not meaningful because the question is incredibly ambiguous.

I doubt even 1% of the country's citizens have actually read any of the bills, even the short and useless Republican one.

Acknowledging that most of the country's citizens likely have no idea what's in the bills, it would have been ideal that, if they said they thought reform was necessary that they then be asked questions about specific provisions, such as:
* Single payer
* Public insurance option
* Opt-out provision for the public option
* Opt-in provision for the public option
* Co-ops
* Triggers
* Individual mandates
* Company mandates for large/medium size businesses
* Tortreform
* Government coverage of abortions
* How to pay for it: Taxing "cadillac" plans, taxing the rich, or other methods

If they asked those questions, we'd have a much better understanding of what the public really thinks about the bills.

All this poll is is meaningless sensationalist journalism on the part of CNN. The utter lack of professionalism in this poll is astounding.

You're astounded that CNN conducts unprofessional and uninformative polls? Next thing you'll tell me is that they don't engage in honest journalism!

Translation: "There is only one political spectrum, and that is the liberal-Republican spectrum. Although to be honest, it isn't really a spectrum; it's a border. You're either inside the border or outside of it. If you're outside the border, then you don't share our "core values", meaning you hate America and want to destroy it. There is no such thing as a variety of positions or opinions on an issue, because every issue is really just a way for us to declare our tribal solidarity by echoing talking points. We don't need a big tent, because our positions are pre-chewed for us by Frank Luntz, and you're either on-board or you're not."

Does that sound harsh? Sorry, but this is a group of people who unselfconsciously send thrills up their own legs when they don't realize or care that we'll see it. "DRILL BABY DRILL" is one of their chants precisely because it simultaneously gets them all revved up in groupthink *and* because, like any hypertribalists, they actually enjoy pissing off an out-group. They heard that it irritated us (because it's stupid, but never mind), so that made it an even more inviting groupthink device. That's not me insulting them. That's them showing their true colors. I'm just laying it out bare.
