A new Rasmussen poll of Arizona finds that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is known nationally for his hard-line stance against illegal immigration, would be the strongest possible Republican candidate for governor in next year's election.

Democratic state Attorney General Terry Goddard, the likely Dem nominee for governor, was tested against three Republicans. Goddard leads incumbent Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, who succeeded to the office after Dem Gov. Janet Napolitano was appointed Secretary of Homeland Security, by 44%-35%. Goddard edges state Treasurer Dean Martin by 40%-38%, within the ±3% margin of error.

Arpaio, however, leads Goddard by a convincing margin of 51%-39%. He is not currently a candidate, but that could change with numbers like these.

Late Update: The new Rasmussen primary poll has Arpaio as the heavy favorite for to the Republican nomination: Arpaio 47%, Martin 22%, Brewer 10%, and others in the single digits.

This guy is the most self-serving, opportunistic asshole in Arizona. His “sweeps” are unconstitutional and the feds have told him to stop. So, he starts whining about “his” country and protecting “his” borders. What he doesn’t talk about are the millions of dollars Maricopa County is having to pay for lawsuits because of his profiling.

Arizona sucks enough without this windbag as Gov.

Dear Arizona,

We're so sorry for stealing your governor.

Sincerely,

What happens if the investigations currently in-progress come to fruition? Can he be governor from prison?

While I'm sure that Sheriff Joe loves being talked about as a candidate for governor, should he run, he'd be 78 before taking office. He also knows that he would undergo scrutiny as a gubernatorial candidate that he never has as sheriff. I'm sure he'd love to run against Goddard, one of the few high profile politicians in the state who hasn't kowtowed to him. He ain't gonna do it. Much better to concentrate on the other yobbos that the Republicans are looking to field next year, like Vernon Parker and Dean Martin.

I don't think he would care about that. The likely nature of any skeletons in his closet would only further endear him to his [rightwing nutjob] political base, up to and including the robbing and killing of a hooker and subsequent dumping of her body in the desert.

I'm more interested to see if someone decent can challenge McCain next year. I think he's beatable with a strong candidate, and if the Dems show the electoral aggression that helped in '06.

One thing about Sheriff Joe-- you don't hear any Mea Culpas in Maricopa. However, he also thinks denial is a river in Egypt.
