The good news for Virginia Republican gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell just keeps getting better. A pair of new polls out today show McDonnell's already large lead over Democratic nominee Creigh Deeds has grown even larger as the hours tick down to tomorrow's vote.

The latest numbers from Public Policy Polling (D) show McDonnell leading by 14. SurveyUSA's newest numbers show McDonnell's lead at 18 points.

In the last PPP poll, published October 27, McDonnell led by 15. The last SurveyUSA poll, published the same day, showed him with a 17-point advantage.

I'm bracing myself for the rash of "Stunning defeat for Democrat = rejection of Obama policies" on Wednesday.

I know that conservatives will be "emboldened", and Democrats "wary of casting tough votes" as the Times phrased it this AM, but I have doubts that conservatives will be able to hide their true colors in next year's general election. I guess it will be up to Dems to take advantage of this.

You can be sure that the RNC has already written and sent out the "lead stories" for Wednesday to all the MSM, Faux News (of course), the Washington Times and the Richmond Times Dispatch. You can look for identical phrases in each just to prove that they all came from the same source.

i'm sure you're right, and that stupid people and/or people who don't live in the commonwealth will buy that crap from the right.

but this is quite the opposite. this is virginia democrats and independents rejecting a NON-obama democrat. he wants more guns flooding into virginia, has said he'd seriously consider opting out of a public option, etc. THAT is what is being rejected here.

so in a way, it IS a "referendum" on obama -- virginia democrats and independents approve of obama and his policies. so a lot of us can't bring outselves to vote for deeds.

What Obama policies? He hasn't and will not do SHIT. We got punked and it's better to realize it sooner than later.Pelosi and Barney Frank aren't getting anything done either.

Oh brother, what nonsense.

For starters, sport:
Economic Stimulus
Getting out of Iraq
World respect returns
Pro-science
Stem cell research
Revised environmental laws

The stiumulus was watered down by ineffective tax cuts and coddling of Republicans.

We are not getting out of Iraq. Not even close.

World respect is good but nothing that produces tangible benefits for the average American whose jobs and homes are in peril.

Pro-science? We are supposed to be grateful for basic intelligence? I don't think so. That doesn't count as having done anything other than accept reality. Not an accomplishment.

Stem cell research. Okay, but I don't think the nation is exactly on pins and needles about that. It's hardly a major issue let alone a major accomplishment and it will do nothing to impact the lives of Americans anytime soon.

"Revised" environmental laws? So what? Tweaking regulations is not an accomplishment. That's like expecting to be recognized because you don't drool in public. Not much to write home about.

I live in VA, and I'm still hoping for that snowball's chance in Hell. It's all about GOTV.

Why on earth would any woman vote for this guy? From everything I've read he's one of those religious whackos who think women should be barefoot and pregnant all the time. I don't understand the conservative mind (assuming that there is such a thing.)

I think of a lot of the blame for the outcome in Virginia can be blamed on the lack of enthusiasm for Deeds by the progressive wing of the Democratic Party in Virginia and the old line that if the race is between a Democrat who runs like a Republican and the Republican the real Republican will win every time. And like Allen and Sanford a case can be made that McDonnell looks more like a governor. Politics isn't always fair and is seldom balanced.

Thank you. Democrats have to quit trimming their sails, as they have ever since Reagan took office. Clinton was symptomatic. Obama looks even worse right now.

McDonnell has a bearing that almost physically nauseates me, between his oily smile and his sharp side-parted Republican hairdo. He's smarmy and slick and televangelical. Style-wise Deeds is quirky and a bit askew, which I actually quite like. The race doesn't feel particularly ideological: McDonnell bashes Democratic tax hikes, Deeds bashes Republican intolerance; both run ads talking about jobs and education and other common-sensical things. Given that contrast, I would go for the unexciting Democrat over the unexciting Republican, which is the way it broke for Tim Kaine over Jerry Kilgore 4 years ago. But I'm a rather recent transplant to VA and I guess my reaction isn't typical.

I get the impression that really what's going on is that McDonnell's slickness makes him seem more competent, and it's starting to have been too long since Republicans actively made a mess of the state for it to continue driving "meh" voters towards the Democratic candidate.

This is what happens to Republican Lite candidates. Why vote for a substitute when you can vote for the real Republican? If the voters had a real choice (meaning a real Democrat)I think there would have been far more of a race in Virginia.
