Reid Slams Broder As A Retiree Who 'Writes A Column Once In A While'

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid may have just endeared himself to liberal bloggers across the land. This morning, he took some heat from Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who cited a Washington Post column to attack health care reform:

"In tomorrow's Washington Post, David Broder, their distinguished senior columnist, certainly not a political conservative, expresses his reservation as a citizen about the steps that we could be about to take," McConnell said.

Reid couldn't have been less impressed. "To focus on a man who has been retired for many years and writes a column once in a while is not where we should be."

No doubt the most hilarious moment of the day. But...sour grapes?

"certainly not a political conservative,"

Broder is the very definition of a political conservative. I can't think of a more ardent defender of the status quo.

Broder is not a political conservative in the Washington Post/Beltway world because the newspaper he writes for has the scale so red-shifted to the extreme right that "conservative" is used to describe people like Charles Krauthammer and William Kristol. On that scale, Michael Kinsley is a far left raving liberal, and David Broder can write "Just attack! Who cares why!" and be called a "centrist".

Exactly correct. The baseline has shifted so far right that every moderately progressive thought is castigated as far left. We must change the baseline to get needed changes.

Republicans have so perverted the term conservative that it now means right wing extemist. Anyone like Broder, who is a very conservative, unoriginal thinker with very poor judgment is considered "liberal" or "moderate" by "conservatives" like the extremist McConnel and what now constitutes the mainstream of the Republican Party.

Yes, McConnell was truly talking out his expensive, neatly-pressed, bought and paid-for trousered posterior on that one.

Broder is a Republican friendly anachronism; what's more, his columns are predictable; Bipartisanship is important when Democrats have control, but when Republicans are in control....

Broder won't fully retire and ride off into the sunset because he needs to stay around DC and protect "our place" from Democrats that might come in and "trash" it.

blue,

Broder won't stand for this disrespect from Reid, after all, Broder is the "Dean of the Wash. D C Press Corp."

It will be interesting to see if Broder fires back.

Oops.

Sung to the tune of "Casey Jones"

Broder's refrain, calcified brain.
Beltway David feels the wrath of Reid.
Trouble in head, trouble in mind.

I particularly liked Broder's opinion that POTUS should make a decision about sending troops to Afghanistan, whether it's the right decision or not. "Just DO something!" Broder advised. Seems he liked George W. "The Decider" Bush better than we thought.

Good to see the fight in you Harry!

It's apparent the Republicans will grasp at anything to torpedo health care reform. Yesterday it was the breast cancer screening guidelines, today it's Broder. The Democrats need to call them on it in absolutely blunt terms.

Way to go Harry!
