Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office is denying reports of any understanding with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), that Lieberman would vote for cloture on health care.
Reid spokesman Jim Manley told us: "There is no such understanding. We hope to have his vote in the end but we are not there yet."
A leadership aide also told us: "Senator Reid is speaking with Senator Lieberman and all members of his Caucus. To say that there is some 'understanding' about votes at the end of the process is preposterous."

Has there been any talk of Ted Kennedy Jr. running for Lieberman's seat in 2012? (He does live in Connecticut.) If not, let's start some!

So once again, Tom Tomorrow has the real story, and the real news outlets do not.

It's a total swapping of reality and satire in the fabric of the political universe, I tells ya.
In Joe Lieberman's version, of course, Copernicus and Galileo never existed- the solar system revolves around Joe.

It's all kabuki. I'm sure if there was a deal, the fact that they're now saying there wasn't only reflects the fact that news of there being a deal came out. They'd have to say this whether there was a deal or not, and the fact of their saying it doesn't have any relation to whether it's still considered to be in force between them. Kabuki within kabuki, too, since the only reason Lieberman said he'd support a filibuster is because saying that puts him in a position of leverage where he can extract more favors from Reid. Plus get the media attention he craves--I assume he has been having hissy fits over all the fawning attention Olympia Snowe was getting there for a while, making him shift and squirm in his seat and whine Pay Attention to MEEEEEEEEE! until his staffers are all going around with their heads down and hands over their ears while waiting for the current tantrum to pass by.

If there was a secret understanding between Joe Lieberman and Harry Reid, this is exactly what I would expect Harry Reid's spokesperson to say. On the other hand, if there was no secret understanding between Joe Lieberman and Harry Reid, this is also exactly what I would expect Harry Reid's spokesperson to say. So from these comments I would surmise that there either is or is not a secret understanding between Joe Lieberman and Harry Reid. I hope that clarifies things.

Never could have seen this one coming.
Hey Joe, how about this deal: you vote for the public option, you keep your committee chair. You vote against it, you join the other caucus.
There are certain attributes that Democrats have. We care about civil rights. We care about environmental protection. We care about health care. If Joe wants to walk away from health care, fine. He can also walk away from our party.
I do think that this all goes back to the filibuster. It has to go. Obama himself refused to organize a filibuster of Roberts because he understood that doing so prevented us from experiencing the consequences of an election. If Lieberman can hold up a public option -- all by himself -- something needs to change. We need to stop the filibuster.

Everything in this post is consistent with this: there is no deal yet, but we're willing to make one.

Why did the original story run without making the call first?
I've always respected TPM as the one of the best of the new breed of media outlets. But lately there seems to be a rush to post stories without attribution, and without making a simple call first.
The story above, posted by Eric Kleefeld, is great: he made the call.
But why rush to post the original story? Couldn't you have waited to have Eric make the call?
Then the story would have been more accurate: "The Hill reports this through their anonymous source, but we called and they deny it -- take it for what it's worth."
Josh, tighten the reins, your ship's discipline is getting loose!

Obviously, there is an effort afoot to discredit Senator Lieberman and create doubt among other wavering Senators that he will remain opposed to the public option. His opposition gives others political cover for opposing the public option if he remains steadfast, which I hope he will.
I simply do not understand this obsession with the public option. I think it's absolutely insane! It is causing the divide between Democrats and independents and Republicans to deepen and will harm our country. Congress simply does not have the budget discipline to follow through on the cuts that would need to be made to make the Dem proposals not increase the deficit.
I think Senator Lieberman should continue to oppose the public option. And, I am not one to normally support Senator Lieberman on other issues - primarily foreign policy - but he is SO right on the health care reform issue.

And yet you fully understand their obsessive opposition against the public option which is supported by insurance and pharma, right?
Sorry, what you are saying does not make any sense unless you are Joe Lieberman.

Yes, I'm obsessed with not seeing our country go down the toilet! Apparently, liberals have no such concern.

The public option is not financed out of the budget. It is financed entirely by premiums paid for by policy holders and it is legally mandated to increase premiums to ensure it breaks even each year. CBO has said time and time again that the public option helps reduce the overall cost of the bill. Like Lieberman, your posturing as a "moderate" doesn't excuse your woeful ignorance about how this policy would function.
