Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) has been one of the most prominent critics of a possible plan to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees to a prison in Thomson, Illinois.

As we wrote yesterday, some conservatives favor it, and the local community sees it as an economic boon. (The Senate defeated a Republican measure to block funding for the detainee transfer today.)

But Kirk, seeking the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate, said today on Fox News he thinks it should be up to the voters. He said it's a "decision bigger than any one senator" and said the "risk is unnecessary."

The Chicago Sun-Times called it a political move, editorializing today: "Kirk's scare talk might do him wonders with the GOP base, but it won't convince a single terrorist that this nation has a backbone."

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee accused Kirk of being a flip-flopper, since he supported a bill last month on the House floor authorizing Obama to transfer detainees. They also said he's using "Karl Rove style fear mongering."

Kirk, a veteran of the Afghanistan war, has been considered one of the more moderate members of the Republican caucus.

"What troubles us is the fear-mongering among those who oppose the plan -- beginning with U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, whom we once viewed (and repeatedly endorsed) as a moderate and thoughtful fellow," the Sun-Times editorialized. "Kirk and other excitable Illinois Republicans are warning that Illinois 'will become ground zero for jihadist terrorists plots.' Can we get real here?"

The Chicago Tribune was not any kinder, writing a scathing editorial today quoting Kirk's comments.

"Give us a break. A super-maximum security prison, such as Thomson would become, is not what most of us associate with the word 'neighborhood.' The critics seem to forget that no one has ever escaped from a supermax," the Tribune wrote.

"We don't think the residents of Illinois will buy into the panic the opponents are trying to stoke. And while the change would surely bring economic benefits and jobs to a depressed corner of the state, the best reason for using Thomson for these inmates is that Guantanamo needs to be closed and they have to be locked up securely somewhere," it concluded.

Huffington Post interviewed Republican State Rep. Jim Sacia, who said he was "very upset" by Kirk's comments.

"I understand people wanting to take a stand. But before you take a stand get the facts," he said.

Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT), who is holding a hearing on the issue tomorow, mocked Republicans for their opposition since the U.S. criminal justice system has handled such cases for several years.

"Since January of this year alone over 30 terrorism cases have been either successfully tried or sentenced using our Federal courts," Leahy said. "No one has ever escaped from a Supermax facility. "In fact terrorists are routinely and securely held at our prisons, including Zacharias Moussaoi, one of the plotters behind the September 11 attacks and Ramzi Yousef, the World Trade Center bomber."

Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA) was the only member of Congress at the briefing in Thomson yesterday. His district is just across the river from the site.

Today he spoke to Iowa Public Radio and asked everyone to "take a deep breath."

"Listen to what the plan is, and make sure there's an opportunity for public input so people have the chance to have their concerns addressed," he said.

Here's Kirk and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) who supports the idea, going back-to-back on Fox today:

Mark Kirk has stayed below all radar as Rep of the 10th which is a purple to blue-purple district. He's played the big moderate for many years. Now that he is looking for the red support, he's all big rightie frightie. He has not had the dignity to fight for anything for many, many years and now, oh my, look at Mark be public. I hope he chokes on it!!!

Wow, so early in the cycle and Kirk has lost whatever credibility he might have had.

I live in that district. I called his office, and called him a chicken. I asked if the Republican Party is changing their name to the Party of the Big Chickens.

People may vote for a crazy person, they may vote for a wack person, but they do not vote for cowards. I cannot understand why the Republican Party is setting itself up as the Party of the Big Chickens.

I am always amazed at how afraid republicans are. Of everything! I thought this was the "home of the brave". And here we have the 28%ers quaking in fear of their own shadows. This is the "real America"? God, I hope not.

I almost pity Kirk. As mentioned above, he's previously come off as sane, especially by GOP standards. Reminded me a lot of Tom Campbell in CA - who, in fact, lost his seat when the GOP ran a Club for Growth-type opposite him.

This, though, is ridiculous. The proof is in the pudding. Virtually all the people crying "Fear!!!" live outside the state. None of them live in the prison's district.

You know, I grew up right across the bridge from San Quentin - home of some of CA's death row. Never gave it a thought...

Remember here that the Chicago Tribune is considered the city's conservative newspaper (it endorsed Bush in 2004 and had never endorsed a Democratic presidential candidate for over 160 years before finally endorsing Obama in 2008). The Sun-Times is the liberal newspaper (their editorial page editor even said so). So when Mark Kirk manages to draw criticism from both newspapers and the Tribune is arguably the more scornful of the two, you know he's really screwed this one up.

This is so ridiculous. Is anyone at Gitmo more dangerous than the various Cripps, Bloods and Disciples already in these prisons. Those guys will shoot you if they think you're wearing your hat the wrong way. Supermax prisons already house the worst of the worst - crazy, psychopathic killers that would keep you awake at night if you ever got to know what they're really like. The people held at Gitmo are cream puffs by comparison.

OK lets open up the gates and let any and all Gitmo refugees in to America. Let include there families, that is only fare. They will need houseing, food stamps, education and transportaton. Sen. Durbin will be happy a Clinton eating Pizza.

Kirk's positions are insubstantial and silly; one is aware of this, yes. He is good at glad-handing and seeming to be reasonable, but he does not have any real contribution to make, and that's clear.

So how are the Democrats going to beat him, is what I want to know? He seems to be sucking up all the air right now and if all that is needed to get this seat is a nice haircut and a genial smile, he's in.

Kirk is just trying to win a GOP primary by suddenly going deep red. In doing so he's all but handing the general to whoever wins the Dem race - most likely Alexi Giannoulis, the state treasurer who actually has better name id in Illinois than Kirk does, has a better get out the vote and funding system, and hasn't made an ass of himself lately.

U. S. Senate candidate Andy Martin calls Mark Kirk the “Crybaby Candidate” for senator

Martin says Kirk’s pandering to public fears about bringing Al-Qaeda prisoners to Illinois is “nauseating”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Andy Martin says Kirk is using his usual campaign tactic of pandering to public fears to win votes in the senate primary

Martin ridicules Mark Kirk for suggesting that “Al-Qaeda in Iraq” is about to move its offices to “Al-Qaeda in Illinois”

Martin says the last thing Illinois needs is “Crybaby Kirk” in Washington

(CHICAGO)(November 16, 2009) One of the downsides, or condign punishments if you will, of being a candidate for office is that you have to listen to your opponents’ speeches, over and over again. Sunday I was nauseated by Mark Kirk’s crybaby appeal to public fear over incarcerating Al-Qaeda prisoners in Illinois.

There are two aspects to the Al-Qaeda-prisoner-in-Illinois issue.

First, bringing Al-Qaeda prisoners to a vacant Illinois prison would create 1,000 new high-paying federal jobs. Northwest Illinois is starved for quality employment. Federal jobs come with goods salaries, excellent benefits and outstanding retirement payments. Where’s the problem with that?

The second issue is whether these dangerous prisoners can be handled properly. Guess what? Illinois has been handling the “worse of the worst” for decades. The nation's successor to Alcatraz Penitentiary was built in Marion, Illinois. Have you heard any southern Illinoisans crying lately that desperate criminals are housed in their midst? No, they are too busy cashing their paychecks.

During World War II, German POW’s were housed in Missouri. How do I know? After the war, the University of Illinois purchased the POW camp and trucked it to Memorial Stadium for married student housing. Is there any record that Missourians were crying out of fear that “Nazis” were housed in their state? I seem to remember the Nazis killed a lot of people too, a lot more than Al-Qaeda.

Or is it all right to house “white” Germans in the United States, but it is also acceptable conduct to a campaign against housing “dark” Muslims under the same conditions? Mark Kirk has a history of pandering to racial stereotypes. “There you go again, Mark.”
