The Washington Independent reports today that 95 percent of Conservative NY-23 candidate Doug Hoffman's cash comes from donors outside the district he's trying to win.

Only $12,360 of the $265,341 Hoffman had raised as of Oct. 15 came from within his district, and only 22 of the 146 donors were from in-district. More than a third of the total money came from D.C.-based Club for Growth.

It's not surprising, given the fact that Hoffman doesn't live in the district and the fact that he doesn't have the strongest grasp on local issues. And the race has drawn the attention of national conservative figures such as Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck.

But 95 percent is a big big number.

Owens didn't run on this fact hard enough - the guy is an outsider candidate, who knows little about the issues and concerns of NY-23 residents and is financed almost completely by out of district money from folks who don't care a lick about NY-23.

Owens probably never expected to be taken seriously as a candidate, just going through the motions. No strategy to win. Didn't take the battle to them, when the chance arose. Seems to me anyhow. Dems deliberately did not field a first-tier candidate.

Dems happy enough with Hoffman in near term. A buffoon to remind voters who is the opposition. District is slated to disappear in redistricting, it is said. Bye, Hoffman, and bye Palin and GOP.

Actually, as I understand it (from no less of a reputable news source than Jon Stewart), Hoffman isn't that much of an outsider. He used to live in NY-23 until he got gerrymandered out of it.

That said, I'd definitely harp on the fact that it's outside influences trying to decide who's going to represent NY-23.

And the district doesn't like the outsiders that much, apparently: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/nov/02/outsiders-influence-irks-voters-in-ny-house-race/

So why are they just reporting on this TODAY. One might think somebody in Watertown might have made this observation by now.
