On the heels of a New York Times report that Rudy Giuliani won't be running for Governor of New York, the New York Daily News now reports that Rudy will instead run for Senate against appointed Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand -- and that if elected, he'll use it as a stepping stone to make another run for President!

The Daily News cites a source close to Rudy:

If elected, the source said, he would use that as a stepping stone to run for President in 2012 - and would not run for re-election to the Senate. A Giuliani spokeswoman downplayed the reports.

The New York Senate seat is up for a special election in 2010, due to the appointments of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State and Kirsten Gillibrand as Senator, but would then be up again for its regularly-scheduled election in 2012. Recent polls have actually given Rudy a lead over the lesser-known Gillibrand, though this would quickly be put to test in an actual campaign in a heavily Democratic state. For one thing, Rudy would face a lot of questioning about whether he's just using the Senate seat as a temporary stepping stone to the presidency.

Rudy's spokesperson downplayed the report: "When Mayor Giuliani makes a decision about serving in public office, he will inform New Yorkers on his own."

Late Update: Giuliani's spokeswoman is denying the story.

As always, he has the interests of the people of NY at heart (at least for the next few months).

Because running for one office with an eye on another is always a sure fire way to get elected. I really can't stand this guy.

Um, I think the numbscull close to Rudy who talked to to the press just threw his friend an anchor. What political genius announces a bid for Senate like this? Campaign might be over before it starts.

Another "DECIDER"....leak the announcement, wait for the backscatter, then make the decision and inform New Yorkers on his own.
That's my boy!
I wish P.T. Barnum or Wild Bill Cody were alive. Rudy could join one of the shows and tell his story of daring under fire until his eyes bleed.

Well, one more loss should put his political career to bed, mercifully.

does this mean rudy will go back to being a "moderate" to win in new york after running hard to the right in 08?

which, of course, means he'll have to re-re-position himself to the hard right again if he wins and wants to run for pres in 12 again.

unless he plans on running as the hard right version of rudy but if he does that he can't/wont win in new york.

If he runs as a moderate, you just KNOW he will be teabagged. Uh, pass the popcorn and the nachos and the pretzel bites, please.

In the primary, Rudy would have to campaign as a fire-breathing, Obama-wants-to-kill-your-children teabagger. But for the general, he'd have to sprint to the middle and campaign as a pseudo-Democratic moderate.

Which is why he won't run; he can't pull off that drastic a maneuver -- New Yorkers won't fall for it. It's too bad he won't try, though; I would love to see Rudy use the teabaggers to get the nomination and then immediately stab them in the back in the interest of political expediency.

An added bonus: if Rudy actually won the senate seat, he'd have to run BACK to the far right in order to campaign for the presidential nomination.

Good to know he's not going to be a serious contender against Gillibrand.

Granted, recent history is such that Republicans basically can't win a US Senate seat in NY if the Democrat is the incumbent, so there wasn't much worry to begin with... But it's nice to know Giuliani (who is fairly popular in NY) has managed to sabotage his campaign even before it even begins.

A noun, and a verb, and 911. What else has he got? He reverses his own political stands on an almost daily basis. And he is not very bright.

Rudy is stick-a-fork-in-him done. All these "sources close to Rudy" are just flinging poo at the media, trying to keep their man's name in the news, and trying to pretend that he still he has some relevance in the political process. He dropped out of the Senate race against Hillary because he had no support, his 2008 campaign was one of the biggest political disasters of all time, and I doubt if he could get elected to city council in NY right now.

Say goodbye, Rudy. You and your lovely wife can always get your faces on TV when baseball season starts up again.

would kerik be SecDef or AG in a Giuliani administration? is there some pointy-headed "law" that would keep him from doing one of these jobs while incarcerated?

I hope this happens. I'm quite impressed with Gillibrand, and it would be a great chance for her to really show New Yorkers what she's capable of. Most of us want to see Rudy fail; she'll crush him and look like a hero doing it.
