The New York Times reports that Rudy Giuliani will not run for Governor of New York, a serious blow to Republican hopes of winning this big governorship in 2010:

It was not clear what prompted the decision, but the prospect of potentially facing Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, who is quietly planning his own run for governor, may not have appealed to Mr. Giuliani, who suffered a bruising defeat in the 2008 Republican presidential primary. While many political analysts believe Mr. Giuliani would have comfortably beaten Gov. David A. Paterson, he would likely have faced an uphill battle against Mr. Cuomo, one of the most popular politicians in the state.

It remains unclear if the former mayor is considering any other political race in 2010. Some have urged him to take on the newly-installed Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, who has never run statewide and is still introducing herself to voters in parts of the state.

He's foregoing the race for governor of New York and, instead, has decided to throw his hat into the ring in the race for governor of 9/11.

Well, it's nice they believe that. Is it based on actual poll numbers? Or did they just pull it out of their asses?

Giuliani is a joke, and I have a hard time believing that enough New Yorkers would have voted for him, regardless of the Democratic candidate.

Paterson is pretty bad, though. You have to admit. He was thrown into a spotlight job -- completely unprepared - and it has shown. The way that his people have managed him -- with leaks and criticism of anyone who may have a different view -- has been pretty much a nightmare. He's ineffective.

Certainly, I'd prefer someone like Cuomo, if he decides to run. And what the hell was Paterson doing, saying that holding the KSM trial in NYC was "a terrible idea?" Aligning yourself with the Cowardly Republican faction is no way to energize the Democratic base.

All that said, if the choice came down to Patterson or Giuliani, I have no doubts as to who New Yorkers would choose.

Sounds like he really wants to be president:

If elected, the source said, he could use that as a stepping stone to run for President in 2012 - rather than run for re-election to the Senate.

Ruuuudy! Ruuuuudy! Ruuuudy!
....and for twenty five cents!...one measly quarter of a dollar!...you can have a genuine, neoprene replica of "Rudy...the All-American Boy! Guaranteed not to rip, snort, bubble, burst, bend at the knees or smell bad in hot weather!...Step right up here folks!....get out of the way young man, you're standing in the path of of a certain sale!
Why is it that every time I conjure an image of Mayor Giuliani, I see him with an arm around that other great hero of 9/11, Bernard Kerik.
Fate, tragedy, and America's need for heroes have put this clown where he is. One would think that he would have a modicum of humility and quit while his star still has some luster.
As a citizen of The Great State of New York....I declare that there shall be three days of mourning for the deprivation of his leadership and dedication to public service.
I know! Let's see if we can make a media darling out of the incomparable Doug Hoffman......
You know him!...the guy that ACORN brought to ruination....I know there is a story there.

Maybe it had something to do with realizing that he is universally regarded as a mendacious buffoon. Oh wait, that would require reflection. Never mind.
