A group of retired Generals led by former Maine Rep. Tom Andrews (D) accused the House GOP leader John Boehner of putting politics before national security today with his plan to force a vote on a bill that would prevent prisoners from being transferred from Guantanamo Bay to the United States.

The National Campaign To Close Guantanamo called Republican arguments that transferring Gitmo detainees to New York will endanger Americans "fear mongering." In a statement, Andrews pointed to past terror trials in the U.S. as evidence of his claim that the GOP is making political hay in the days since Attorney General Eric Holder announced that terror suspects will be tried in the U.S..

"Since 2001, 195 terrorists have been tried, convicted and locked up in federal supermax prisons on US soil under the Bush and Cheney administration," Andrews said. Boehner and other GOP leaders "never uttered a word of concern and opposition " back then, he continued, "but now that a Democratic President is doing it, the sky is going to fall and America will soon be under attack."

"General Colin Powel and General David Petraeus, and national security experts all agree that it is time to bring these terrorists to justice and erase the symbol of torture that has stained America's status in the world known as Guantanamo Bay Prison," Andrews added.

The House GOP hopes to use a procedural move to force the vote on its "Keep Terrorists Out Of America Act" before Holder moves any detainees from Cuba to the U.S..

The National Campaign To Close Guantanamo launched Oct. 20 "to support President Obama in his effort to shut down Guantanamo," according to the group's website. The group was co-founded by Andrews and retired Lt. Gen. Robert Gard.

The Dems have to get their PR machine working. If it was the Dems making horses' asses of themselves, the R's would make them pay. But with the R's doing it, the Dems don't seem to have that same ability. I don't know why.

Most of these Republican leaders are truly afraid of these individuals. They are truly afraid of almost everything. That's why such a large number of them were afraid to perform military service. Give them some slack. We'll take care of the terrorists, who, after all, are no more than common criminals. Chicken hawks do a lot of squawking, but we don't need to be afraid of them, either.

I see a TV commercial starring Boner, Inhofe and the rest talking about how afraid they are of these Gitmo detainees. Then the announcer comes on and says "They don't need to worry. We have competent people in charge now."

When did record unemployment, record deficits, no legislative accomplishments and Carteresque foreign policy weakness become a sign of competence? The American people certainly don't think Obama is competent as there were at least three polls that came out today showing his approval rating at 50% or below.

So, you're laying the blame for the state of the economy where it belongs, right? Square on Bush's shoulders. Just clearing that up for everyone.

As to "no legislative accomplishments"...Apparently you're either too dumb or too far in denial to just use Google. Either way, there's no help for you.

Record unemployment? LOL. In 1983, unemployment was 11.5%.

Yeah, as opposed to all those Dems who served in the military like Bill Clinton. And you gotta love how military service is meaningless until it can be used politically by the Dems. The whole John McCain episode is the perfect example. Or don't you remember all those times we were told his Vietnam service wasn't worth a hill of beans?

If you don't want to look like a partisan hack, don't pretend that both parties don't have their fair share of draft-dodgers and combat avoiders.

I share your frustration. The Democrats seem to lack the ability to attack and frame the Republicans as the weak obstructionist fear-mongers they are. When I see these "experts" from either side on TV it's clear the Repubs put aggressiveness and rhetorical point scoring above accuracy or truthfulness, while the Dems are always trying to be inoffensive and nuanced. Just doesn't work with the American people guys!

If Dems could get on message, and even repeat what Andrews said, they would easily put this argument to rest:

"Since 2001, 195 terrorists have been tried, convicted and locked up in federal supermax prisons on US soil under the Bush and Cheney administration."

Yeah, those Dems are just so truthful. WHy just today I found out that there are really 875 congressional districts instead of 435. And I also learned that those "created or saved" jobs numbers were completely accurate as well. I gotta tell ya, this new adminstration is just chock full of truthy goodness.

The header is a little confusing. Tom Andrews isn't a retired general himself. I'd been wondering what he's been doing though; he was a great congressman, and probably would have stomped all over Collins last year.

TV GOPers are always ready with the "party line"----a little like commies in their own way. No matter what question they are asked, they repeat the mantra for the day. And, yes, they are afraid of everything after Jefferson!! So, Mel Brooks could do a movie where the GOP righties all move to Texas to be safe, TX secedes because they now have the votes to follow their state const. which allows that, only to be taken over by Mexico!!

It's a shame that Republicans can't get behind bringing accused terrorists to justice. How soon they forget that the Clinton Administration caught the dirtbags behind the 1993 WTC bombing, brought them to trial and proved their guilt. Soon, I expect that the Obama administration will be doing much the same with the Gitmo detainees.

If you don't think that our justice system is smart enough, fair enough and resilient enough to try these dirtbags and win convictions against the guilty, then I'd like to know why you hate America and the American justice system so much.

Move to Russia if you don't like it, Comrade.

BTW, masanf troll boy, what kind of karma does one incur if, like you, one lies about every single topic imaginable, especially ones where lives are at stake?

Fascinating. When a Democrat attempts to administer justice to a terrorist criminal, then he's playing politics.

When a Republican does the EXACT same thing, then he's protecting America.

The...cognitive...dissonance...is making me dizzy...
