The new Washington Post poll illustrates the extent to which Sarah Palin's political appeal is a disproportionate one, focused on the harder line of the Republican Party -- which also happens to be where the GOP's energy is these days. The key question we have to really answer in the next few years, then, is how far Palin's disproportionate support among the hard right can really get her, and whether she can expand from there.

Overall, Palin had an 18% plurality when Republicans and GOP-leaners were asked who their choice for president was in 2012. But among Rush Limbaugh listeners it was a whopping 45%, and also a third among Glenn Beck viewers (we can probably assume that these two groups overlap to some extent). When asked who best represents the GOP's core values, Palin attracted 17% support -- with 48% among Limbaugh fans, and 35% among Beck's audience.

Palin certainly has built up a following with these two hosts and their audiences. She's not ruled out a Palin-Beck ticket in 2012 -- though Beck has ruled it out with some very colorful language. Limbaugh has praised Going Rogue as "one of the most substantive policy books I've read." And no less a voice than Bill Kristol, a frequent advocate of Palin's, has said that the GOP's "center of gravity, I suspect, will instead lie with individuals such as Palin and Huckabee and Gingrich, media personalities like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh."

Another key number: When all GOPers were asked who best represents the party, Palin's 17% plurality put her ahead of John McCain, who had himself picked her for the 2008 ticket, at 13%.

A previous CBS poll from two weeks ago gave a similar hint about Palin's support. Only 44% of Republicans wanted her to run for president, and only 43% thought she had the ability to be an effective president. But her strong suit was white evangelicals, 48% of whom wanted her to run, and 50% of them who said she had the ability to be an effective president.

However, Palin certainly does have her work cut out for her if she wants to run for president. A previous Washington Post poll showed a majority of Americans viewing Palin unfavorably, and saying she was not qualified to be president. And that CBS poll mentioned above also found that even self-identified conservatives didn't want Palin running for president, despite the support of her white evangelical base.

On the other hand, as the recent Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll illustrates, the Republican base is very enthusiastic right now. If politics comes down to the simple question of who shows up, then the people who do like Palin could end up exercising a much greater influence than their raw numbers would suggest.

HuffPo has yet another example of Palin being Palin -

As the epigram to Chapter Three, "Drill, Baby, Drill," Palin assigns the following remarks to the Hall of Fame hoops coach:

Our land is everything to us... I will tell you one of the things we remember on our land. We remember our grandfathers paid for it--with their lives.

Only the quote wasn't by John Wooden. It was written by a Native American activist named John Wooden Legs in an essay entitled "Back on the War Ponies," which appeared in a left-wing anthology, We Are the People: Voices from the Other Side of American History, edited by Nathaniel May, Clint Willis, and James W. Loewen.

HuffPo is now reporting the Wasilla Quitter is taking a Gulfstream II and her staff is taking the bus...Such a sham....some will get it that her motives are no more pure than her actions!

She should comment to Beck. We will have 2 years to play with those creds and the attending actions!

I was surprised that she didn't have higher numbers from the Beck/Rushbo crowd

Influence when? In 2010? When she isn't even on any ballot?

I'm still curious about the rush to publish this book so soon. Why not wait until later in 2010 when she could have an even greater impact on candidates? Think of all the excitement: she publishes her "memoir", and travels around the country doing book signing AND stumping for the chosen few. By next spring or summer, the buzz about the book will have died down, and then what will she do?

I'm wondering if there's a reason Palin published this is such a hurry, and whether that reason means she's not really going to be such a force next year.

Well, that's certainly more plausible than my pet theory: that Levi is going to publish a tell-all where he explains that Trig is actually his son.

I need to stop reading National Enquirer, don't I?

Queen of the Stupids Sarah Palin can't even finish a 3K run. How would she ever be able to handle any real responsibility?
I guess that's a "gotcha" question we're not supposed to ask.

OK, but America isn't looking for a smart President. America is looking for someone they can relate tooo. And boy, she is hot!

Wow. Kristol, who, like his dad, has never been right about anything, nearly got something right.

If only he'd written "black hole" (ding-ding-ding) instead of "center of gravity" (bzzzzt). Oooh, too bad. But thanks for playing, Bill.

Our next contestant hails from so far inside the Beltway that you'll have to unzip your DockersĀ® to see him. Please welcome Luke Russert.

Palin has become a center of gravitas? Oops! My bad! GRAVITY!

AS to why she had to publish her book now, she needed the cash and why stop at one? I think we will see and earnest, well-designed effort from her every year from now on that is carefully aimed at the talking points and issues formulated by the gang of liars and propagandists at Heritage and AEI, and focus-grouped ad nauseam by Luntz.

One thing these outfits do very well is identify exactly where the buttons the 45% right wing nutjobs who love Palin are located, and just how hard to push them.

Many of us believe that as extremists at both ends of the political spectrum become more vociferous and divisive, more Americans will move towards the Center.

If any form of extremism or "political correctness" is abhorrent to you, please consider joining our brand-new Centrists Group at Linked In. We welcome all who believe consensus is not only desirable, but possible, whatever their party affiliation or lack thereof.

Provocative, but cordial and respectful, discussions and debate on national and international issues. No Flamers, ranters and ravers, script bots, or clandestine political operatives allowed.

There is a bridge between conservative upstate New York and Vermont. It fell into such disrepair two months ago it was condemned. It's pretty much an underutilized commuting corridor for low wage workers. I think I read the New Yorkers use it more than the Vermonters.

The town halls they convened (especially on the NY side) are full of angry commuters demanding action from the government. Tens of millions of dollars will be spent to replace the bridge, mostly Fed dollars. Ferry service will be 100% subsidized in the mean time. The economic "pay back" of the spending will never be realized - ever.

It's funny how when people's very own situation is impacted in a noticeable way, government largess is of course wholly justifiable.

There are exactly zero Republicans from either state saying publicly that even considering delaying reconstruction or scaling back the ferry subsidies should occur, let alone ANY suggestion that that the bridge should go away and all government support of ferries should be suspended. But every one of them says taxes should be slashed and spending should be cut.

These same Republican state politicians are the first to legislatively suspend massive amounts of corporate state taxes, lower commercial utility rates and make massive municipal public economic development investments to woo companies to stay or come to their states.

Like Sarah, I was for the bridge to nowhere before I was against it.
