Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell (R) steered clear of President Obama's visit to his state today. Obama stopped off at Elemendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage on his way to his tour of Asia that starts tomorrow.

Obama was greeted at the base by hundreds of cheering airmen as well as Alaska's Lt. Gov., Craig Cambell (R), and the state's junior U.S. Senator, Mark Begich (D). But Parnell said he was too busy to make an appearance.

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner columnist Dermot Cole offered his take on Parnell's decision:

I understand that Parnell had a commitment that he made a month ago, but Parnell should have apologized to the Associated General Contractors and gone to meet Obama at Elmendorf. I'm sure the AGC would not have objected.

Parnell's decision reflects poorly on Alaska. It's an unwanted holdover from the partisanship of the 2008 vice presidential campaign. Parnell should be charting a different course.

Whenever our president stops in our state, it is a matter of common courtesy for our governor to provide an official welcome and show the hospitality that Alaskans are known for.

Not surprisingly, the Alaska Democratic Party agreed with Cole's view. Party chair Patty Higgins, from a party statement released today:

"We are talking about the President of the United States coming to Alaska. When your Commander in Chief comes to address our soldiers the day after Veterans Day, the Governor should be there, come hell or high water."

I agree that Governor Parnell's failing to greet Obama reflects poorly on him and perhaps on his state, but I wish people would get off the "Commander in Chief" kick. The president is not my commander-in-chief, nor is he Sean Parnell's, nor is he any civilian's. He's commander-in-chief of the armed forces, like the airmen at Elemendorf AFB.

Actually, he's commander of the AK National Guard which Parnell supervises. As such, Parnell has an obligation to review those troops with Obama (presuming that said troops were also at Elemendorf AFB).

Correct. And since Parnell clearly shirked his duty to his commander and went AWOL I think we can all agree Commander-in-Chief Obama should have him court-martialed and executed at dawn.

I'm all for making jokes, but that's just absurd. He should be shot in his bed without warning by Levi Johnson, who will be coronated as king of Alaska.

Hmmm. AKMuckraker fills more detail (including a map):

... the “major” speech that the governor apparently could not reschedule to welcome the President of the United States to Alaska? That’s the “Excellence in Safety Awards Luncheon” at the Captain Cook Hotel. It’s sandwiched (pardon the pun) between the “Go From Profit Mystery to Profit Mastery” presentation, and a Department of Transportation Q&A session.

According to Mapquest, the Captain Cook Hotel is 2.24 miles from Elmendorf Air Force Base and for travel planning purposes, you can expect the trip to take 6 minutes.
