Sen. Chuck Schumer's spokesman Brian Fallon says his boss stands foursquare behind the opt out public option, and any suggestion that he's been involved in negotiations regarding a triggered public option are false:

"Since Leader Reid announced the opt-out public option would be included in the Senate bill, Senator Schumer has not approached anyone about compromises," Fallon said in a statement to TPMDC. "He is fully behind the level playing field opt-out, which he himself helped advance."

That's a direct contradiction to the assertion in this post, by a Democratic aide, that Schumer recently approached Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) about a public option compromise. But it doesn't address Landrieu's contention, that Schumer is a point man in behind the scenes negotiations regarding a potential trigger compromise.

We'll try to get more clarification on that last point.

Brian,

Next time, it won't hurt to place a call to any of the senators' offices to check up on a story. On this trigger nonsense, you should have simply called Schumer's office to see whether Landrieu and her gang were pulling smoke over your eyes.

Denials upon denials. Doesn't matter. We all know negotiations are going on. And we now now the PO won't get 60, so all of Schumer's bluster about being behind the opt-out is nonsense. There will be a trigger at best unless they go reconciliation.

Who cares. This thing is going to end up with the trigger in the end.

"Schumer's not initiating any trigger negotiations"...well, only one conclusion to draw from that: Schumer is most certainly initiating trigger negotiations.

...is not initiating...by which of course, he means 'is facilitating'. Or maybe he's just having the girls over for drinks.

What is the point of negotiating a trigger? I mean, who does that satisfy? Nobody is buying that it is anything other than complete and utter bullshit. It will not mollify the people who want a public option and the people who are calling for the completely pointless "trigger" will clearly be just as happy to have nothing at all. So who are these "negotiations" supposed to satisfy?

Schumer is a snake. He basically double dog dared Reid to put the PO in his mark, and now wants to be seen as the hero to get a compromise when the sell-out corporate whores will not vote for the public option.

And to TPM, just like all villagers, unnamed sources are every bit as reliable as named.

I hope you all are enjoying your cocktail parties.

HEre is my proposal for those Schumer negotiations:
1.Opt in for states, beginning 2010
2.Plan would begin, if triggered, for other states in 2014,
3.Once triggered states may opt IF they provide certain alternative guidelines to ensure access to health insurance for all
4.keep the Conrad Co-op as a tag along
5.FRee Choice amendment to keep Wyden in
6.Add abrogation of antitrust exemption to keep Sanders in
THEN-everyone has their piece of the cake....
