RNC Chairman Mike Steele is happy about Bob McDonnell's win in Virginia, and sends over a statement regarding the expected sweep from the GOP ticket.

Steele takes a whack at Obama:

"Tonight, Republicans made history in Virginia. In a state that had been in the Democrats' column after the 2008 election - and in DNC Chairman Tim Kaine's own backyard - Republicans swept all three top state offices in Virginia for the first time since 1997. These significant victories speak to the fantastic campaigns run by Republicans across the Commonwealth and the voters' clear rejection of liberal tax and spend policies that Washington Democrats are trying to force on Americans.

"Governor-elect Bob McDonnell's common-sense conservative message of less spending, lower taxes and more responsible government clearly resonated with voters. His opposition to the Democrats' plans for higher taxes, government-run health care and a job-killing 'cap and trade' bill was rewarded by Virginia voters with a victory tonight.

"Lt. Governor Bill Bolling was reelected tonight to be Virginia's chief job creation officer and continue promoting a legislative agenda that focuses on the things we Republicans believe in - keeping government small, improving the quality of health care for Virginians, and keeping taxes low for families and businesses to make certain that Virginia remains a great place to do business.

"Virginia voters' selection of Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli to be Virginia's top law enforcement officer ensures that public safety will be a top priority in the Commonwealth, Virginia's second amendment rights will be protected and small businesses will be sheltered from excessive regulation.

"This is the first time since 1997 that the Republican Party has swept all three top state offices in Virginia and I believe that it highlights the desire of Virginians to have strong Republican leadership guiding their Commonwealth.

"The Republican Party's overwhelming victory in Virginia is a blow to President Obama and the Democrat Party. It sends a clear signal that voters have had enough of the president's liberal agenda. The Republican Party and our grassroots supporters have renewed strength in Virginia, and I look forward to working with Governor-elect McDonnell and Republicans across the state to build on our momentum."

Micheal Steel went onto indicate, his well-known modesty notwithstanding, how his remarkable leadership of the GOP in the past year made all the difference.

Was this a statement from Steele or Rush Limbaugh?? Did Steele actually say "the Democrat party"??

Too funny. He probably spent weeks writing this bull. All will be forgotten next week. These "sweeps" are a non-issue and hopefully the dems in congress won't get cold feet over this nonsense.

If they get cold feet, it should be the other way: Quarrel among yourselves and fail to act on HCR, for example, and you will lose in 2010.

Everybody knows we are spending a lot of money to fix our myriad problems. Having nothing to show for it can't help.

I agree with your point 1000 percent. That was what I was trying to get across by the cold feet statement. Dems in congress should ignore these anomolies and full speed ahead on getting sh*t done. It's been a year and we got squat to show for the alleged efforts at this point. Very disappointing.

Unfortunately, they may. They're all as nervous as cats. "Gotta get re-elected, nothing else -- including principles -- matters."

i think steele is probably right. the redneck republicans in central and southern virginia are probably just stupid enough to think that the governor, lieutenant governor, and state AG have something to do with "liberal tax and spend policies that Washington Democrats are trying to force on Americans."

you know, because they're being elected to go to DC and set national policy and all that.

god, that guy is a moron.

It's too early to tell, but I think the GOP played the expectations game all wrong. They trumpeted these victories long before they actually happened. If any of this "big sweep" doesn't occur, or is razor thin like in NJ, then it calls into question the tremendous "momentum" (a la Mittmentum) that they have been going on about.

This is what happens when activist liberals are scorned by their own leaders.

And Attorney General-elect Cuccinelli will now enforce only laws that he agrees with. And will not be a friend of Virginia's gay community. just the opposite, he will find ways to harrass and potentially arrest gays - even in their private lives! Virginians should have no faith that Cuccinelli will do his utmost. he really is underwhelmingly qualified for his new position. but he's been elected so here we go...

Excuse me? How is this a problem for Obama?? We're talking governors, folks. Two steps above dog-catchers as far as the current administration is concerned. In the only contest that mattered, the NY23, a Democrat is poised to win.
Hey, we elected (some of us did, anyway) a Republican governator here in California because the Democrat in office seemed like a problem -- only we ended up far worse off than before. Go for it Virginia and New Jersey, best of luck to you!
