U.S. Capitol Police arrested 10 people this afternoon after the Capitol Hill Tea Party crowd stormed Congressional office buildings.

Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, public information office for the Capitol Police, told TPMDC the arrests happened in the Cannon House building as tea partiers attempted to protest Speaker Nancy Pelosi about health care.

They were charged with unlawful entry (entering a Congressional office and refusing to leave when told to do so) and/or disorderly conduct (yelling in the hallway outside an office) at Room 235 in the Cannon House Office Building.

Room 235 is Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office for district business, not where she conducts her duties as Speaker. That's handled at an office in the Capitol building.

TPMDC happened upon a crowd that formed around two police vans as the protesters were prepared for "transporting," according to one officer there.

Without those official details, protesters in the crowd watching the arrests were furious. They shouted "Let them go!" and one man yelled at the police that "Martin Luther King" was being dishonored and shouted "Letter from Birmingham Jail!"

One woman told officers they were "shameful." Others called the arrested protesters "political prisoners."

"This is America, this is not the Soviet Union," one woman said.

Like a bad game of telephone, the crowd spread rumors without anyone having witnessed exactly what happened.

Several people said the group had been arrested for praying. Others said the group was arrested for ripping up pages from the nearly 2,000-page health care bill.

To show support for them, members of the crowd started ripping up their pages from the bill, which rally organizers had handed out for the purpose of reading them to members of Congress.

"Here's a piece of paper, I'm tearing it," one woman shouted as another joined in: "I tore a piece too!"

That woman later told the officers, "I know you guys are just doing your job but don't you hate your job?"

"I'm embarrassed," another woman told her friends.

"Read your history books," another woman shouted at the officers.

"Thugs from Chicago," a man shouted at police.

"Arrest Nancy Pelosi for treason. You're arresting the wrong people," another shouted. "Arrest some real terrorists!"

One of the men arrested (photo below) appeared to be wearing a priest's collar. He was ill, and officers were holding him up as he sat on the curb. After several minutes, he was led away in an ambulance and the crowd shouted that he was a "hero."

"Shame on you!" the crowd erupted. "These guys are patriots!"

"In your heart you know this is wrong," a man yelled at police.

We're uploading video of the strange scene, but it may take awhile, so check back.

Late update: Here is the first video we've uploaded, of the "God Bless America" moment.

Later update: Here you can watch another video as the man, priest collar visible, is led away to an ambulance.

That's when the heckling really kicks up.

Friday update: Evan is running down the story of these arrests, Randall Terry's group was involved. Also, the man who was on the curb appears to be Norman Weslin, and we dug up some video showing him using similar tactics as he was arrested at a Notre Dame protest when President Obama spoke during graduation.

More like social psychology... the type that led to creating laws against inciting to riot and other stuff about mass-group violence. Sad to say, there are very uncivilized things in all of us when we collect together in large crowds, especially if we are primed by machiavellians.

Boy howdy! And haven't these specific groups been primed though! That this happened is zero surprise.

The biggest sad of all, to me, though is that the inciters won't be touched.

The level of compartmentalization in these people's heads is amazing. the same people who think nothing of standing outside an Obama rally with a pistol on their hip or an assault rifle strapped to their back can turn around and scream bloody murder when they're being removed from a government building.

Victims or thugs? Which is it? Make up your twisted little minds, people.

Even better - better than even chance that they have "trespassers will be shot on sight" signs hanging around their trailer.

And is anybody surprised that this crowd spread rumors without any actual fact? Being shocked by that would be like being shocked that there were racists at a KKK rally...

If you google pictures of the KKK marches in the 1920's and 30's.. you'll be surprised at the simalarities. And, though it is NOT being said .... the modern day folks carry the simalar ideas and feelings. Far too many state "I want my country back!" Who do you think they think "stole" their country? Yet they fail to recognize that the previous Admin put ALL of us in this current mess.

If Michelle Bachmann is going to rile these folks up so much and encourage them to unlawfully enter into Congressional offices, shouldn't she at least demonstrate the courage of her convictions and practice some civil disobedience herself and get arrested with them? It seems like the least she could do considering her overblown claims about freedom and the American way of life hanging in the balance.

Dany,,,,,,,,,dude, over-punctuating has the inverse effect.
But more importantly it leads to serious issues regarding usage.
For instance, how does one determine whether to use 8 exclamation points or 9?
"HELLO!!!!!!!!" or "HELLO!!!!!!!!!" ?
I noticed that you went with 8 for the final sentence of your post, but then hit your "AMEN" with 9. Help me out.
I just think there is too much wiggle room here.

Nope, you're wrong. Liberals don't generally attack other people's character just because they disagree with them. It's not a frat to us. Liberals don't tend to be hypertribalists who take everything personally. That's why we don't flock to nuts like Beck or adopt slogans so easily. We're not as brainwashy.

You right-wingers love to caw and coo that there's no liberal equivalent to Beck or Limbaugh on the radio. Don't go backtracking now and contradict yourself. You were right the first time. Liberals prefer the nasty grey areas of reality to the black-and-white, I'm-always-right-and-you-hate-America attitudes that so take hold amongst the ignorant hillbillies on your side of the aisle.

So one of the idiots chantend "MLK"? Actually, that's not a bad comparison. MLK and many other civil rights leaders/activists peacefully protested and often broke the law in doing so. When MLK was jailed in Birmingham it was because he intentionally broke the law with the intent of getting arrested. That's civil disobedience. But you can do that and then complain about getting arrested and throw out "MLK" as a reason why you shouldn't be arrested. (idiots...had MLK not been arrested - again, his intent - the publicity surrounding the incident wouldn't have been as great and he wouldn't have written his Letter from Birmingham Jail) And you certainly can't chant "Soviet Union" when you are arrested for intentionally - however peacefully you may act - breaking the law.

These people are the ones who need to learn their history. What a bunch of effing ma-roons.

And did the pro-reform protesters who were arrested earlier liken the Capitol Hill police to commies and Chi-town thugs?

And arrest Pelosi for treason. Methinks these people have no idea what treason is. The stupid hurts soooooo much.

MLK's civil disobedience was also peaceful. The language of the tea party organizers was consistently that of making individual Members of Congress "afraid." At their rallies, there is constant talk of "revolution" with people quoting Jefferson to the tune of shedding blood. You cannot then go into the halls of Congress and try to break into offices and claim you are in the peace-loving tradition of MLK.

Though I doubt this person has ever read King's letter, or considered much of his thought.

Nancy Pelosi's legislation in Congress has already saved millions of dollars in health care costs to those with pre-existing conditions. Her legislation has kept tens of thousands of people, especially in the South, out of bankruptcy. She wants the public option which will take billions of dollars out of the insurers' pockets and into the pockets of middle class Americans. She championed cash for clunkers which has kept at least 150,000 people employed and helped millions get rid of old inefficient cars. She wants to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan and save lives of Americans and trillions in costs, which people in the South oppose (they claim these wars don't really add to the federal deficit - what geniuses!)

Yet people in the South hate her. She's helping them live better lives and they hate her. Why? Because Glenn Beck, Michelle Bachmann and Rush Limbaugh tell them to.

You all have warmed the cockles of my heart.
Somebody mentioned anti-war rallies. Where are they when you need them? Have they been defanged, demoralized, or diminshed? There's a war going on that needs protesting!

MLK marched in the Chicago area and he noted that the thugs he faced were more racist and hostile than those he faced in the South. He, of course, was talking about people who are probably Teabaggers or their parents or would support them against the scary Kenyan who stole the government.

It's like the 1960s anti-war / civil rights movements all over again, but for people who hated the 1960s anti-war / civil rights movements.

"Fight the power! Oh wait, that's us"

Hey Bozos, even the Soviet Union isn't the Soviet Union anymore.
Health care in Russia is worse now than it was then the Soviets were in power.

Shorter protestor today:

"Quick, tell me whether those people being arrested over there are Code Pinkers or Teabaggers, so I know whether to yell "America, love it or leave it!" at the people being arrested or "Leave them alone, this is America, not the Soviet Union!" at the cops!"

I have said it over and over and over. Where where were these people during bush's administration. If they were there when he ruined this country, and carried on like they do now, maybe we would't be in the mess we are in.And the ten people arrested for trying to vote into Pelosi's office are all members of GOP House of Representatives office. They are being paid by us the taxpayer to shirk off their job and try to harrass a representative we voted for. They along with the one who incited them to riot should be arrested. Bachman's mug shot should be plastered all over the newspapers. I am so disgusted that the people of my state voted for her. But of course the republican strong hold of Minneapolis must be a stupid as she is.

Sounds like this must have been a meeting of the

WPLA

Yes, the White People's Liberation Army

who chant:

We're White!
Uptight!
And Not Too Bright!

Truly Surreal.

Ya know what burns me ... well I'll tell ya! White folks who shout out "Martin Luther King" .... "Birmingham Letters" ... these very same white folks HATED MLK when he was alive. Thought that "States Rights" overruuled humann and Civil Rights. Today believe the BS about ACORN that Fox spuews ... carry signs of the President of the US as a witch doctor, images that are racist AND now what to upsur an undisputed election by the America people of an Afican-American man.
I know ALL white people DO NOT think/act as these do ... but ... I tell you ... it is dissappointing to the extreme! Where are "sane" white people speaking up and out about these people.
Are they afraid? Are they not ashamed? Oh there I go grouping all white people together as if ONE white person represents ALL white people. Ummmmm where has that happened? Just my thoughts about this teabagger stuff.

Oh the horror of the thuggishness. Like Kent State, except for Real Americans being the victims. Oh the brutality of the police. Truly, these people are as heroic as the civil rights marchers braving Bull Connors dogs and firehoses and the head busting Chicago cops in '68.

It is my understanding that the protesters at Speaker Pelosi's office were from the group Operation Rescue. Operation Rescue moved from California to Wichita, KS in 2002 to specifically target Dr. Tiller's clinic. This year, Dr. Tiller was killed by a person associated with Operation Rescue. I hope they increase security around Pelosi.

Have any of you read what you and others have written? Most of these posts are as angry and hate filled as those you are criticized and mocking? Doesn't that just make you a different version of the same problematic mindset? Why is such hate on either side considered a solution or appropriate? Is there a single post among these that suggests a resolution or builds a bridge toward realistic solutions???

Go soak your head. These imbeciles are bigots and insurance company patsies.

The "solution" is to pass a bill with a strong public option, NOT knuckle under to organized insurance company intimidation. The insurance goons who invest heavily in your bad health and bankruptcy won't even say who paid for the buses for these cretins. Give it a good soak.

"Building a bridge toward realistic solutions" means relying on facts, and not dismissing facts you don't like as "lies."

That would be a start, anyway.

Funny how that one never shows up on the news.
