The Danville TEA Party Patriots, a group that has courted controversy by planning to burn Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi at a rally this Saturday, may be having second thoughts.

"We've been getting a lot of flack about this," Danville TEA Party chairman Nigel Coleman told the Lynchburg News & Advance, "about burning those two in effigy and a lot of people in the public are unhappy about it. The story has gotten so large, it's kinda strange."

As the News & Advance notes, Coleman himself had announced this event by sending out a press release that promoted the event as "a move sure to spark controversy."

"I still would like to do it, but it's still up in the air at this point," Coleman added. "We've already started stacking firewood and building the effigy...we will have a bonfire. Burning someone in effigy was just gonna be part of it."

Yeah, gee. You plan to burn a Congressman and the Speaker of the House in effigy and people are talking about it. How strange!

Yeah. It's a lot like burning Bush in effigy or hanging Palin the from side of a house. Very Tacky indeed.

How about this one?

Yes how strange. I have a friend who will give her entire inheritance to defeat any politician who supports this hanging. Unfortunately, she is my age (very old) and as a white Southerner, she remembers the dark days in the South when they hung black people and left their bodies hanging to terrify other blacks. She is a Republican also, but she said she will donate her entire inheritance to anyone who runs against these creeps who do such a stupid thing that will reignite this horror of the past. I have not heard from her lately, but I am wondering if these guys call it off, if she will work so hard to defeat them. As a Republican, I encourage them to stop this insane behavior that brings back the image of black hangings perpetrated by Southerners. It may be too late to try to fix this disgusting idea but they should try. Our party should discipline these guys if they do this.

They probably got stopped by the Klan for not wearing the appropriate attire for public bonfires. In that part of our country, Crossfire isn't dueling TV pundits.

I really hope they go ahead and do it anyway.

How hard would it be to find a few dozen archival video clips of GOPers commenting on past effigy burnings in the Middle East? The juxtaposition would be made to order for Jon Stewart.

These folks are entirely unemcumberred by the thought process, to quote Ray Magliazzi(Click & Clack).

If they are told by the only "authorities" they are able to hear, Rushbo the Hutt & Co., that aliens from the planet Nibiru were working with ACORN to raise their taxes and elect literal donkeys as Democratic candidates, these maroons would shriek in terror and go out and buy another 1,000 rounds of fast disappearing ammunition.

Their tactics may be Alinskyesque, but you do realize they are agitating on behalf of greater profits for multinational corporations, and even greater salaries for multimillionaires, right?

And that the people on whose behalf they are agitating view them as nothing but useful idiots who deliver the votes needed to protect their profits and their obscene salaries, right?

You do understand that your teabaggers are the storm troopers demonstrating on behalf of those they perceive to be their betters, and that there is actually nothing in it for the demonstrators except another chance to vent their irrational hatred of "liberals" like Obama, don't you?

I think you'll find a great many of the TEA party folks believe that those on the left are in bed with the big corps. GM, GE, Goldman Sachs, health care insurers. The money flow certainly seems to support the allegations.

Perhaps, "these people" may be average Americans who are sick and tired of being looted by an out of control govt and their corrupt corporate friends.

Open your minds and consider the possibility.

"Perhaps, "these people" may be average Americans who are sick and tired of being looted by an out of control govt and their corrupt corporate friends."

Perhaps, it they wanted to be treated as anything other than partisan shills, they should have become sick and tired of an out of control government when it was deficit spending during times of relative fiscal health due to tax cuts designed to reward the wealthiest Americans for their support. Not to mention the big business-subsidizing, union-busting, inequality-exacerbating war waged on the middle and working classes by Republicans since Reagan.

But, since they were deafeningly silent when Bush was bankrupting the country with irresponsible tax cuts and wars he couldn't win, their protests now are clearly nothing but unprincipled, partisan whining, and should be ignored.

If you lived in the Deep South like I have, you will realize that a great number os southerners want this history of theirs forgotten and these drips are re-igniting this issue of burning bodies of people that they did not approve of. Burning in effigy is not a freebee in the South. Since I am old as dirt, I have seen the most despicable behavior towards blacks and any person of color. This insanity will produce a whole lot of that old footage. The South, to its wonderful credit has advanced far past that part of their history of tolerating that sort of racial behavior. So, this foray by silly Republicans who do not speak for our party at all, will set our party back for years in the South. Further, they will pay a heavy price for it from moderate Republicans like me. I am hoping the National Party lets them know about how stupid this is.

Perriello is a really gutsy guy. He defeated that racist bigot Goode (rhymes with lewd) in a really conservative Appalachian district. Yet he still managed to vote against the abortion amendment and for the House health care bill.

Glenn Nye, another Democrat who won in a Republican district in Virginia, is a coward who voted against the health care bill. I now have to listen to commercials praising Nye and encouraging voters to tell him to continue the fight against the socialistic, fascist bill that will raise taxes on millionaires. Ironically, Nye's district is more military than Appalachian and could transmogrify into a Democratic district. Too bad Nye didn't catch the Deeds example -- disrespect your base to win.

And if our new troll makes a comment, I can only recall the nuns telling me "Silence" during mass while who knows what went on in the sacristy. How quaint.

These people are cowards, and also fools. They can not win with ideas or facts, so they resort to the bizarre, grotesque theatrics that turned so much more of America against them (see Schiavo, Terri) earlier, in the misplaced hope that it will somehow work this time.

The inability to learn from experience, illustrated.

Bizarre? Grotesque? I submit to you the recent inaugural ceremony. In all of my years, never have I witnessed chanting and heckling of an outgoing president in front of the White House. The change of power is a solemn, respectful and historic event.

This behavior showed utter contempt for this nation and it's history. That was the moment when honor and respect for this president was tossed out the window. This administration will suffer beneath the same trampled respect for this nation that it brought into the White House.

Bush was certainly not a personal favorite, but he was the president and the Commander and Chief of my country.

Last time I looked for the info, the ratio of crosses to flags being burned in the US was estimated at 10-to-one.

Why don't we ever hear any of these right-wing looney-tunes thumping the tub for a Constitutional amendment to ban the burning of a cross?

And why do we never hear them being confronted with it?

Joe was protesting policy, the constitutionality of that policy and a lack truth from the president regarding that policy.
