President Obama left Seoul this morning to head home, concluding an 8-day, 4-country trip through Asia. Air Force One just landed in Alaska for refueling and he's expected back at the White House tonight.
Reporters traveling bombarded White House aides with questions about the lack of tangible results came from the trip, especially from China.
White House senior adviser David Axelrod said Obama "advanced our goals" over the week by having frank discussions with Asian leaders and presenting a new face to the world.
"This is not an immediate gratification business," Axelrod said. "All of these things require solid diplomacy, relationship building, discussions, and that was the purpose of this trip."
Axelrod also repeated the refrain from the last few days that Obama raised human rights issues more directly than other U.S. leaders have done in the past.
"We didn't come halfway across the world for ticker-tape parades," Axelrod said. "We came here to lay a foundation for progress. We've done that."
As he left, reporters asked Obama to assess the trip.
"It was great. We got a lot of work done," he said.
Obama did an interview with Xiang Xi weekly while in China that was published today.
"It has been a very productive trip," he said. "We have worked on a range of issues of mutual concern to the United States and China, and I think it signifies the continued growth of the relationship that is so important not only to our two peoples but also to the world."
Of the entire trip, the president's reception in Seoul was the most exuberant, with large crowds chanting "Obama" as the presidential motorcade headed to the Osan Air Base, where he spoke to nearly 2,000 troops.
Obama told reporters the welcome ceremony at the presidential mansion there was "the most spectacular ceremony for a state visit that we've been involved with as we've traveled."

That is an awful long euphemism for "Obama didn't accomplish a damn thing". But hey, the country is used to that by now.
The Obama Rerord: Record unemployment, record deficits, no legislative accomplishments, and foreign policy weakness that makes Jimmy Carter look like William Tecumseh Sherman.

Oooh, a cowardly, hit-and-run troll! Wow, what incredible ignorance. It's one thing for you to have it but quite another for you to want to flaunt it. Exactly like Caribou Barbie!
Facts (and these are just for starters):
stem cell research
strong world respect again
health care reform just around the corner
environmental laws based on peer-reviewed science, not theology
tax cut
stock market up 25 percent
economy rescued from the brink of catastrophe
as of 9/11/09, officially became more successful at defending America from foreign terrorists than Shrub and Cheney.
All of the above in just the one year since President Obama's inauguration. More accomplished for the good of real Americans in 365 days than Shrub did in 8 years. And if you had just the slightest, basic clue about economics instead of just regurgitating what someone else told you to think and what you want to believe even if it is bad for America, you would know the job recovery is always the last thing to recover following a recession. And this Bush recession (his sole legacy) has been the deepest since the Great Depression.
Game. Set. Match. Obama.

Interesting that we Americans expect immediate gratification form this President but ask few questions of the true ditherers because they were Cowboys and sent our troops to War on a lie--cut us off from the rest of the World and made a sham of diplomacy!
To collaborate --you must get to the table FIRST...The real diplomacy happens behind closed doors or you get played when the goal is the limelight --like clinton got from Arafat!
Oh , and unemployment started WHEN????, The deficit was caused by what wars ,off budget, and what deregulations in whose Admin... It was not this admin, folks, look to the history...

You're funny.... As soon as he signs Health Care, with that single signature, he will have done more than many presidents in their entire terms...and that will be just one year in ;-) SvK

Obama's brilliance and competence is killing these folks like mansaf and others. They know how good he is and that he is putting nails in their coffin everday. Their ilk are losing credbility by the hour with independents. Who other than the 27% of the palin loving, tea bagger, birthers, would vote for their party? Sarah Palin is all they have and they are trying to convince us she is a force to be reckoned with!!

Anyone who thinks Obama was going to there accomplish some sort of set in stone agreement is grasping at straws. Noone connected to reality thought that.

He obviously did everything that he was supposed to do.
China likes him and his popularity is the only thing Bush helped him with, speaking as a Canadian we absolutely hated Bush so when Obama came into office, we immediately fell in love with him. Obama's approval rating in Canada is upwards of 70%.
He needed to show the chinese that he was handling the debt and he is trying so he was well received. I just hate these right wing talking heads who claim that China and other countries are scared of his spending and supposed socialist policies. They don't realize that the rest of the world is much more liberal and when they see the US trying to solve HCR they say "FINALLY."

But in all seriousness, apparently Obama received an honorary Taekwondo belt while in Korea.

And apparently he actually did study and practice Taekwondo while he was a state senator in Chicago.

"Obama Wasn't Expecting 'Immediate Gratification' From Asia Trip"
- I'm trying to picture Axelrod saying: yes, Obama DID expect immediate gratification but didn't get any, so yeah he's disappointed.
That's why Axelrod is spinning it as Obama simply went to hang out with his buddies the other foreign leaders, network, build connections, shoot the shit and "advance the goals". Because he simply has nothing else to show for it.
Should have given another "major speech" at least.

What was the stated purpose of the visit? And what was he supposed to get out of the visit?
In the modern period, when has China ever caved in to an American president's request?
In other words, do have anything to add to the discussion but spitballs, you tedious troll?

The topic probably wouldn't have been great.
I mean, I'm guessing that most of the discussion was China asking WTF we are doing economy-and-debt-wise. A major speech would have been entitled: China wants Americans not to default on all of the loans that China's given us. Meanwhile, they want us to keep buying their products. And we want them to buy ours, but not ours made only there.
Too complicated and boring (though extremely important) for a "major speech". Obama probably had a migraine.
