Casey, Unlike Nelson, Not Inclined To Filibuster Health Care Bill Over Abortion

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) said yesterday that he'd filibuster Senate health care legislation if it does not ultimately contain restrictive, Stupak-like abortion language. That's touched of fairly frantic negotiations, and Nelson has postponed filing his amendment. But for another pro-life Democrat, the issue isn't so black and white.

"I already voted back in July, where we had a number of amendments in [the Senate HELP] committee on abortion, where I voted as a pro-life Democrat but also supported the bill coming out of committee, and that's what I'll do here," Casey told reporters this morning.

Aside from the public option, perhaps the biggest hurdle Democrats face if they want to make it through this period of debate and amendments, and pass a health care bill, is abortion.

The House bill ultimately included restrictive abortion language in its legislation, but the Senate is actually a more pro-choice body than the House, and the procedural realities of the upper chamber--60 votes to do almost anything--makes it seem fairly unlikely that something like Stupak could be added to the Senate bill at this point. That, and the polarizing nature of abortion, makes the Nelson problem fairly difficult to address.

Casey isn't particularly worried just yet. "On a lot of these issues that are contentious and where people have strong feelings, there's still a lot to play out," he said.

That means Democratic leaders will have to figure out a way to keep Nelson from filibustering, or else find a new vote. Because, according to Casey, the language in Nelson's amendment is still likely to mirror Stupak's. "It's in formation, I don't think there's any final language--at least I have not seen final language," Casey said. "I think it will probably closely mirror what the House voted on."

They're not "pro-life". Even some mainstream journalists are using the term "anti-abortion".

OMG, I shouldn't have to tell you this, it's pretty basic. These people are pro-death penalty and pro-war, they're not "pro-life" by any stretch of the imagination.

Get it right.

And abortion advocates are not pro-choice, they are pro-abortion. They even oppose letting people choose whether or not they will have health insurance. Claiming you are "pro-choice" and then signing off on throwing people in jail if they don't buy health insurance is a fucking joke.

WOW you are a tea baggin oathkeeping conservaligious rethuglican 912er through and through, PRO CHOICE means the right to make the choice with out any interference and yes I support the death penalty and yes I am a veteran and yes I am a citizen and yes I think that anyone who has the ability and resources to pay for health insurance and exercizes their 'pro-choice right' not to do so and gets sick and then relies on the government to care for them ought to pay a fine BUT for you we can make it a jail sentance FOR YOU. So you believe in pro choice for health care but not for women to get rid of their conservative republican mistakes. what a sad little person you must be so terrified if women have rights oh that so terrible.

Its his right to decide what he wants to do its a PRO CHOICE thing the right to choose what he will do with out fear of being forced, you claim to be pro life but your pro choice about health care so which is it are you pro choice when its about your right to choose or not do you deserve the right to decide if you get health care or not so when you get over your HATE WOMEN HAVING EQUAL RIGHTS try this thing we call freedom to do as you choose.

Looks like the way to 60 is write off Nelson and Lieberman and get Collins and Snowe with a public option compromise, then buy off Landrieu and Lincoln with Medicaid money to go along with it.

If that is what you are wishing for then this bill has even less of a chance to pass than I thought.

The conservaligious have no right deciding thes issues for the nation NO DOES, it's a matter of personal freedom and choice, and if a woman wants to get rid of her 'conservative' mistake she has the right to do exactly that.

It becomes my right the moment they use my tax dollar to set up a plan that will allow someone to buy insurance to cover abortion. It becomes my right the moment subsidies that come out of my paycheck are used to fund an exchange, or whatever euphemism is being used this week, where abortion coverage is offered. I will stay out of your uterus when you stay out of fmy wallet

How about this, do you believe that anyone has the right to privacy? do you believe that the government has the right to tell you if you can have a child or not? do you believe that women should be forced to sign consent to rape clauses as a condition of employment? bet you said YES NO NO. so why do you care if a woman chooses to get rid of her conservative republican mistake? because thats what an abortion is to me the right to get rid of another conservative republican mistake other wise why would we ( the american people) need a right to an abortion in the first place, if not to get rid of another conservaligious rethuglican before it grows up to screw this country.
