Former Vice President Dick Cheney is adding his voice to the ranks of Republicans who are criticizing President Obama's response to the attempted bombing of Flight 253, declaring that Obama "is trying to pretend we are not at war," and that this is because being at war "doesn't fit with what seems to be the goal of his presidency - social transformation -- the restructuring of American society."
Here is the full statement Cheney gave to Politico:
"As I've watched the events of the last few days it is clear once again that President Obama is trying to pretend we are not at war. He seems to think if he has a low key response to an attempt to blow up an airliner and kill hundreds of people, we won't be at war. He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won't be at war. He seems to think if we bring the mastermind of 9/11 to New York, give him a lawyer and trial in civilian court, we won't be at war.
"He seems to think if he closes Guantanamo and releases the hard-core al Qaeda trained terrorists still there, we won't be at war. He seems to think if he gets rid of the words, 'war on terror,' we won't be at war. But we are at war and when President Obama pretends we aren't, it makes us less safe. Why doesn't he want to admit we're at war? It doesn't fit with the view of the world he brought with him to the Oval Office. It doesn't fit with what seems to be the goal of his presidency - social transformation -- the restructuring of American society. President Obama's first object and his highest responsibility must be to defend us against an enemy that knows we are at war."

Regarding Cheney:
Why does he want to insist we're at war? It fits with the view of the world he brought with him to the VP's office. It fits with what seemed to be the goal of his vice presidency - total social control -- the restructuring of American society to the advantage of the military/industrial complex.

Actually, Mr. Cheney is no doubt the push in the Bush Jr, administration for all that war mongering. And if you talk about war, Mr. Cheney's system of torture comes to mind. Nothing heroic about that. So, bear in mind, it was on his watch that an actual attack on our homeland occurred. Plus, he no doubt suffers from a sense of failure. But just ignore him. His administration not only allowed 9/11 but they besmirched our good name by their systematic torture program and they simply cannot be trusted now. If our military people are captured, I am wondering if Mr. Cheney ever worries about their being treated in the same way he pushed for treatment of Gitmo prisoners. Oh, I forgot, he is the deferment kid so he probably never gives it a thought.

Cheney's an assclown who-as with many Rethugs-desperately want terrorists to attack America again. That way they can blame Obama and try to justify their abandonment of basic human rights while they were in charge. And it would be good, in their view, for the Repulblican party as well.

Mr Cheney is trying to pretend that we are not a nation of laws and it seems he is not comfortable unless the public is cowed into submission. He seems to be falling into the very trap set by those who plan terrorism, that trap being to change our way of life, centered on fear of them.

Hey Cheney! STFU!
Now that I have that off my chest, Cheney would do well to remember that the TSA and Intelligence procedures that failed were formulated under his watch.
The Yemeni AQ members who were once in Gitmo and were involved in this attempt were released under his watch.
The failure to succeed after 8 years in the GWOT was under his watch.
So please Dick, get lost will ya?

Cheney pretends he won the Afghan war instead of admitting he ignored it. cheney pretends the American people give a shiite what he thinks. Mike Allen pretends the same. What in the hell is this supposed to even mean? It's like in their feverish little minds "war" = the constant state of hysterical frenzy of fear they kept people whipped up in as opposed to actually having soldiers in the field fighting actual enemies. Or, at least, that's what they're counting on the voters believing.

Somebody should probably remind Cheney that if we *are* at war, then it's grossly inappropriate to criticize a sitting commander-in-chief, as such things simply enbolden our enemies. Wasn't that literally exactly what he said for the past 8 years? Can't imagine calling the current president "weak" over and over again is anything similar to that, though.

I fluctuate between wanting to smack Cheney soundly across the face to make him shut up, and wanting to give him a hug and tell him that the mean 'other people' aren't going to hurt him.
This country totally screwed up when it put Bush in power. The same scared little boys that saw Crazy Ivan under every rock growing up got control of the government at a time when a new enemy came to the forefront.
Their response? Yelling FIRE in a crowded theater. Now why would an accomplished leadership do such a thing? Shouldn't they know better? Rather than taking a 'keep calm, deal with the situation' approach, Cheney is screaming like the crazy lady in the Airplane movies. Except there's no line of people waiting to smack the shit out of him to make him come to his senses. That's the job of journalists, and apparently they're all out to lunch.
The current administration's approach is 100% the right one. Minimize the incident publicly, so that people don't freak out, while behind the scenes letting our allies know we are not impressed. It's been what, 5 days? Already there are hundreds more security personnel in Paris airports, and Amsterdam will be using full-body scanners on every passenger headed to the US. Amsterdam - a haven of personal freedom!
What good will it do to get the entire country worked up and afraid over something they have zero control over? I wish more people would think about that, and what possible motivation these GOP ass clowns could have to instill such fear in the populace.

Oh, and the GOP is playing right into the hands of our 'enemies', too. What's the point of terrorism? To instill fear in the public, to fragment our society and cause mayhem.
We lost the battle of September 11 thanks to the Bush administration. We have become a frightened, fragmented, less free country as a result.
Now the Republicans are trying to lose the battle of Christmas 2009, despite the current administration's attempts to win it.

Yeah, he's not like Bush, who always followed Teddy Roosevelt's maxim, "Talk loudly and carry a small penis -- er, stick."
Republicans talk a lot about how important it is to call it "war" and "terrorism" to distract from the fact that they sucked at actually dealing with it. They're trying to figure out how to convince people that Obama should be more like Bush without reminded them that Bush, you know, existed.

Does he want to invade Nigeria, Yemen, or Holland? Cheney is incapable of learning. If you are an Al Qaida recruiter do you say 'come be a criminal,' or 'come be a warrior?' Calling this a 'war' gives undeserved power to the bombers. So does invading their part of the world, BTW.
