Remember how there was that big row when Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) said the Republican health care plan amounted to 'don't get sick, and if you do, die quickly'? Demands for apologies, etc? Well, Republicans may have a new Alan Grayson of their own: Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK)

"If it doesn't raise costs, and we're truly going to take this money from Medicare, what it's going to do to our seniors is, I have a message for you: 'You're gonna die sooner.'"

It's hard to see how this allegation is any different than Grayson's. Let's see if it becomes the media's (and the Democrats') main point of interest for the rest of the week.

Late Update: One senior Senate Democratic aide told us: "His insights on health care are about as helpful as his marital advice to Senator Ensign."

Nice catch.

Let's see if it becomes the media's (and the Democrats') main point of interest for the rest of the week.

Coburn is a lying sack of shit and makes a mockery of the medical profession.

Dr. Tom Coburn may well be competent in his duties as John Ensign's gynecologist, but he is out of his depth (and maybe out of his mind) on matters of medical policy.

How many minutes before someone dresses up as the Grim Reaper at a teabagger party and holds a sign saying "public option"?

Isn't Coburn some kind of Deacon in the church at C Street?

I wonder what his God thinks of his lying and scaring seniors for political pourposes.

That's not a cool thing to say to people in their later years. Using the fear of death to oppose health insurance reform -- which will help save lives. By extending coverage to many millions of more Americans, end "pre-existing conditions", ending other insurance company abuses, capping out of pocket expenses, and other much needed changes.

Some GOP Senators have no shame, I'm sorry.

I'm in my 50s, and can remember the days when some Republicans still had integrity. Those days (and Republicans) are now only memories of a by-gone age.

Do "lines" exist anymore and, if so, at what point can we safely say that they have been crossed? Maybe I'm being overly idealistic, but I just don't recall a time when an elected official could say something so outrageous, dangerous and false, and not be called out for it. I guess there is still time for this to become a major controversy, but I just don't see it happening. If anything, the media will simply use it as an excuse to bring in two people on "opposite sides of the issue" to debate whether Coburn is right or wrong, i.e., fair and balanced-style.

I'm so sick of this.

I should be ashamed of myself, but if this guy were to die today I would be delighted.

I do not understand why he thinks we care about his opinion since we all kmow it's lies based on the "Just Say No" policy of his party.

Unfortunately, the Senate does not appear to have a rule like the House's about offensive remarks being "taken down."
Even more unfortunately, most reporters can't tell the difference between a reasoned argument and a hyperbolic lie -- and see no need to fact-check the relentless torrent of whoppers uttered daily by Cons like Coburn or McConnell (and, while we're at it, by non-GOP but still fact-challenged folks like Joe Lieberman and Evan Bayh).
By the way, can I get anyone to join me in starting to refer to GOP members as "Cons?" It pretty much says it all, both in terms of criminal irresponsibility and congenital negativity.

Perhaps for background music they should have the words and music from the old Irish drinking song of "Isn't it Grand Boys" which contains the actuarially sound verse that the longer you live means the sooner you're going to die.

Dude'll say anything. Just like his buds in the Society for the Protection of the Rich and Powerful.

If there should accidentally be the least bit of truth in his claim, at least we can be comforted in the knowledge that he is, or soon will be, a senior himself.

The problem is that about 30-35 percent of America shares Coburn's lunacy. They tend to congregate in the same places (largely, but not exclusively, the former Confederate states), get their news from Fox, get their political marching orders from their church, etc.
They may be in a shrinking minority, but everything they see and hear reinforces the idea that they are in the majority -- and that anyone who doesn't think like them is unpatriotic, criminal and immoral. They are told by well-financed, articulate, stentorian voices in the mass media that their country has been stolen from them -- and they believe it.
These folks have made Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck into best-selling authors. They think Tom Coburn is a tower of strength, decency and common sense -- and, as they live in a faith-based world, they are completely impervious to facts.
The problem is that, in today's America -- and despite the well-documented and all too recent horrors of the Bush years -- waaay too many people DO take Coburn seriously. Scary times.

One wishes that a Senator had the balls to say that on the floor during this debate. Coburn and Ensign are Senators that the Dems are going to *never* work with in the next seven years. Torch them.

Exactly - Ensign and Coburn are representatives of the lunacy tchapman talks about. Which means either that they are as stupid as their constituents, or political grifters, both of which are damn scary, given the problems the world is facing.

If you take the words "Senator Coburn", take a few letters out, add a few letters in and mix them around, you get "Total Douchebag". Coincidence? I think not!
