The Republican Party is taking a great moral leap in welcoming Rep. Parker Griffith to the caucus -- accepting someone who they believe deliberately gave poor care to cancer patients in order to make money off of them, and who hates America and sympathizes with radical Muslims on top of that. At least, that's what their ads against him in 2008 said!

Griffith, of course, is the Alabama Congressman who who just officially announced in the last few minutes that he is switching parties, from being a conservative Democrat to being a conservative Republican. The National Republican Congressional Committee ran some pretty hard-hitting spots against Griffith in the 2008 campaign -- which were taken down from their YouTube account today. However, a source with an interest in the race was able to capture them first, and gave them to us.

Here's one that accuses Griffith, a medical doctor, of a practice known as "warehousing" cancer patients -- meaning to deliberately give poor care to patients in order to keep them bedridden and make more money from their medical treatments. "His approach caused unwarranted pain and suffering," the announcer said, "but it meant more money for him."

Another ad accuses Griffith of hating America, and apparently even sympathizing with radical Islam -- with audio of the candidate himself speaking! "America's greatest enemy is America, and its materialism...We have nothing to fear from radical Islam." The ad then repeated the audio of him saying "America's greatest enemy is America," and the announcer declared him "wrong for Alabama."

I'm sure the GOP will welcome him with open arms. More G-O-hyPocrisy. Just like Mark Sanford, David Vitter, John Ensign.

That would be so cool. But it probably can't be done legally.

Wrong for America. Right for the Republican Party. I believe that's a tautology.

This douche bag is tailor made for the GOP --no doubt he will now be considered one if its rising stars.

Yeah, Griffith seemed like a pretty reprehnsible politician to begin with. This just diminishes his profile further.

Regarding his switch, it's particularly interesting:

The AL-5 has a Cook rating of R+12, which makes it a pretty safe Republican district EXCEPT for the fact that it's a district that has never willingly voted a Republican to Congress. Since its creation in 1833, the only time a GOP representative was elected was in 1866, due to Reconstruction. Guy lost his bid for re-election in 1868 and ridiculously conservative Dems have held the seat since. Griffith is an old-school Deep South Dem, the kind that infuriates the party by blocking anything that might improve the lives of anyone that lives outside the district...while also pissing off Republicans by requesting obscene amounts of federal assistance. Either Griffith gets knocked off by a "real" Republican in the primary, or a Blue Dog knocks him off in the general; he's not winning re-election as a Republican.

I'm shocked, shocked, to learn that the NRCC didn't really believe what it said.

I didn't agree with Phil Gram on a whole lot of things but at least he was honorable enough to resign his seat while a Democrat and then run again in a special election as a Republican, something not observed by either Senators Shelby in Alabama or Spector in P.A., along with numerous other swtichers.

Hopefully he'll split the GOPPERS and a Dem will win out.

Whatever....this guy made a leap of political death.

I'm a Progressive Democrat, and I saw firsthand how he treated cancer patients--my Dad was one of them. Dad was dying of cancer in Humana hospital in Huntsville, AL, in the mid-1980s. Until the day I die, I will have the vision of him lying there with unspeakable suffering while the nurses tried to reach Parker Griffith for pain medicines. My sister and I were at the nurse's station, and after hours of trying, they finally reached him. We could hear Griffith on the other end of the line yelling at the nurse because he didn't want to be interrupted during dinner. He was so self-important, he couldn't be bothered to get Daddy any relief. One nurse quit her job because she couldn't stand to see patients suffer. She had worked at Sloan Kettering, and we could tell that she hated Griffith. I personally think Parker Griffith is a snake in the grass. I wrote him and told him when he was running for office how upset I was at him and that he should work to get good healthcare reform. I called one of the former staffers in Washington of the Senator who was a family member (I still have contact with the staffer). I wanted to make sure that my letter was received by Griffith. Guess what Griffith did? He had the BALLS to write me back that only tort reform would save the healthcare problem. I still have his letter. In other words, if people such as I who had their families suffer at his hands wouldn't sue, there would be no problem. The Republicans can have him. I will never, ever get the picture of Daddy in agony out of my head. So if anyone out there knows Griffith, you tell him that what goes around, comes around, and I hope he gets the same treatment he afforded my father.

Dixie: Hi, I live in the 5th District, too. I have followed the story of PG for over 20 years and know more than I need to about this man. I was almost sick to my stomach when I saw him in those TV ads donning a white coat. Right! Hippocratic Oath, my a**. I contacted the HSV Times on numerous occasions during last year's campaign asking them why they essentially turned a blind eye to this story for so long. Unfortunately for the voters here, the paper seemed to let politics trump truth -- the editorial board would never support taking down a fellow Dem. It's just a fact here. In an email exchange I had with Patricia McCarter, she said nobody was willing to go on the record with their experiences. Maybe that is just life in a small town...? And while that may all be well and true, I still contend that there was enough information out there in the public domain to have done better reporting and were enough leads that were never pursued. I personally know several people who had lots to say who were never contacted. So, this is all a long winded statement to encourage you that if you still have something to say about this guy, please say it. And say it LOUD. Whether he is a Dem or Repub is irrelevant to me; I don't want this guy in office period. He doesn't deserve to represent anyone.

And I am very, very sorry to hear about your father; he deserved much better than that.

Dixie: Having taken part in the cancer wars, I have experienced the same thing. There are two kinds of docs--the ones that will understand and care for the patient--and take the call for meds---and the kind that will yell at the nurse for interrupting his (or her) dinner. Based on your experience, Griffith is in the second category. Anyone supporting this guy supports his behavior. Nuff said.

The Tort reform angle is mostly bull****. Here in Wisconsin we have some of the strictest malpractice caps in the US; coupled with close to highest cost medical insurance in the US as well. Case Closed.

The Wisconsin caps on damages in medical malpractice cases were held to be unconstitutional in 2005.
