Asked today about Sen. Joe Lieberman's (I-CT) claim that President Obama didn't pressure him on a public option, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama "absolutely" did everything he could for health care reform.
Gibbs said Obama has been clear on what he supported, and senators have been clear on what they didn't support. He added that the president is very pleased with the Senate bill, which has 95 percent of what he wanted.
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) told TPMDC that he was surprised Obama didn't push for it. "I just assumed that" he did, Harkin said.
Reporting by Christina Bellantoni.

what's odd about such a statement as, He Did All He Could, is it seems to say,
Hey, Sorry, Obama wasn't powerful enough to take on special interests and the industry. We had to give in to them, amke deals behind the scenes, and now we can only hope we can talk them in to giving us a little more at some later time. But hey, technically we can call this historic! Banners are being printed as we speak.
Weird.

Wow! You have those insurance industry stats right at your fingertips almost as if . . . you are an insurance industry troll trying to ensure that No Health Insurance Co Left Behind stays just like it is: perfect for health insurance companies.
Notwithstanding the centrality of your industry to health care delivery in the U.S., the fact remains that insurance is merely a delivery system. And it could be replaced say, for instance, by single payer. It is health CARE people want and need. Health INSURANCE is [please don't faint] not necessary at all.

That's right. Harvard University is the "insurance industry". Congressman Alan Grayson (who quoted this study on the House floor) is the insurance industry. Howard Dean is the insurance industry since he's cited that study. Bernie Sanders must be the insurance industry, too.
You're so woefully uninformed with your "people don't die from lack of insurance" ignorance.

It is kind of fun watching all the Obamapologists twisting themselves into knots pretending that Obama showed leadership on this issue. He didn't, but it's still fun to watch.
The thing that really sucks is that George W. Bush managed to get virtually every destructive, 14th-Century-esque bit of legislation he wanted. It didn't matter how many Rethug votes he had, it didn't even matter if Rethugs were in the majority. Bush pretty much got what he wanted.
On what was purported to be his signature piece of legislation, Obama's approach was, "Any bill at any cost. Mission Accomplished."
It's easier to cave than to lead. At least for Democrats.

The nation heard Obama's lukewarm support for the public option in his joint-session speech in September.
===================
Now, it is -- it's worth noting that a strong majority of Americans still favor a public insurance option of the sort I've proposed tonight. But its impact shouldn't be exaggerated -- by the left or the right or the media. It is only one part of my plan, and shouldn't be used as a handy excuse for the usual Washington ideological battles. To my progressive friends, I would remind you that for decades, the driving idea behind reform has been to end insurance company abuses and make coverage available for those without it. (Applause.) The public option -- the public option is only a means to that end -- and we should remain open to other ideas that accomplish our ultimate goal. And to my Republican friends, I say that rather than making wild claims about a government takeover of health care, we should work together to address any legitimate concerns you may have. (Applause.)
For example -- for example, some have suggested that the public option go into effect only in those markets where insurance companies are not providing affordable policies. Others have proposed a co-op or another non-profit entity to administer the plan. These are all constructive ideas worth exploring.

So, tell me what he was supposed to do with Lieberman or the other moderates that did not want the PO? If you see the writing on the wall that it cannot get the votes and you know you have to get something done...GET SOMETHING DONE!!! Work to fix the rest later after you've stopped the hemorrhaging. It's about progress. If you say this is not progress, I don't think you're looking at the entire picture. I want single payer, myself.

You'll just get harassed for expressing this point of view -- but just wanted you to know that others DO agree with you. I'm impressed that so many people imbue him with magical, mystical, supernatural powers. I think very highly of the President, proudly campaigned for him and will proudly do so again, consider him extraordinarily intelligent and able -- but looking at the cast of characters he had to deal with and the Republican intransigence, it *never* occurred to me that he would be able to convince all 60 to go for the public option. --- In fact, Obama never suggested that he would be able to do that. If some folks choose to see him as supernatural, that's their choice, I suppose -- but it's sort of bad sport to then condemn him for being something he never claimed to be.

... which you wouldn't have considered that "wasted" at all if it had succeeded with just one or two Republicans, because then he wouldn't have had to make deals with the Liebermans and Nelsons. Unfortunately in real life, he has to decide what course to pursue *before* the results are known.
In any event, many things were achieved by his serious effort to be bipartisan: -- he confirmed that he was going to have to deal with the conservaDems, all of them -- the American people, at least those paying attention, have seen for themselves that the Republicans have no interest in helping to govern -- and I'm willing to bet there are some decent Republican Congresspeople who are so fed up with their own party that they are either thinking of switching or at least will be more independently cooperative in the future.

While I would have liked to see the President fighting hard in public for the public option, he laid out what he wanted over the last 2 years. Even if he had blasted the Libermans and Nelsons, they write the legislation, not the President so, if those 2 clowns and Landrieu and Lincoln held their ground which they did, there's nothing the President could do. He would likely have alienated them and made the passage of future legislation on anything that much tougher. My point is that anyone who takes Liberman at this word is an idiot! He lies everytime he opens his mouth. Now, go hook up with the teabaggers who are equally gullible

That's a load of bull. If the WH told you guys that the Public Option was a no go - the Left would have had a fit and demanded, petitioned and do whatever they can to get it back on the table. They told you that there was no political will for single payer and STILL people are mourning it as if it had a chance. And even now after Lieberman refuses to vote for the PO (and I don't think he is the only in the senate who is against it), progressives are still pressuring lawmakers to put it back.

Obama is a pragmatist plain and simple. He never pretended to be a progressive even though I believe he is - you cannot govern from the left and you saw what happened in the past 8 years governing from the right. You have to find a middle ground because you cannot please everyone on every issue. He has to make decisions based on the best information he has and I might add none of us has.

you are not alone in your bewilderment. the only explanation I can come up with is this is a very cynical decision to run against left and right, tweak the lines of Bush-Cheney policy slightly to the left and create a new electoral majority as the new party of the center. this at least explains the odious choices of Emanuel, Gates, Geithner and Sumners. It also explains why the administration has been having a Sista Souljah moment lasting 11 months. hoping for progressive change from this administration is clearly a waste of time. I will not be surprised if we see the administration join with deficit hawks attacking social security and medicare. stay tuned.
