Press Secretary Robert Gibbs reacted this morning to reports that Rep. Peter King (R-NY) said he would push to subpoena White House social secretary Desiree Rogers over last week's infamous party-crashing incident, saying that "we'd be happy to look at it."

He said there is a history of White House staff being able to advise the president confidentially with the few exceptions of Watergate, 9/11 and Whitewater.

"I don't think even Peter King would have the audacity to in some way put the Salahis in the trifecta of Watergate, 9/11 or some of the financial dealings," he said.

Late Update: King responds to the Gibbs dig:

"The only audacity I had was 'the audacity of hope' that the White House would be honest. Unfortunately, they are more interested in covering up and stonewalling."

"'I don't think even Peter King would have the audacity to put the Salahis in the category of Watergate and 9/11,' he said."

Unfortunately, based on Peter King's history, I wouldn't be surprised if he did just that.

Funny you should mention 9/11, Mr. Gibbs.

Does anyone remember how the Congressional hearings about this "security breach" turned out?

Is Gibbs being willfully naive about today's Republican Party or has he been in a coma for the last few years?

The more I think about it, the more I beieve that Rogers is just the worst kind of staff person you can have. What has she accomplished?

1. Bad execution with state dinner (typos on menu, apparently)

2. Contributed to security incident because of lack of understanding of how things should or might work (changed procedures from previous WH, "belt and suspenders" approach to guest admission)

3. Put boss in position where he looks worse instead of better, as he should have if. Of course, making her testify is political theater and hypocrisy, but it means Obama is put in a no-win situation and has to expend political capital to deal with it, over what is an essential trivial matter.

I used to work as a caterer. It's all about managing the details. I simply could not have sat with the guests at a dinner I helped plan and execute -- I would have been way too crazy worrying that the staff wouldn't get the seating or the wine selection right. That she thought she could "take off" once the event started tells me that she doesn't understand what her job requires.

Go back outside on this site and read the findings from yesterdays' hearing. THE SECRET SERVICE ADMITTED ALLOWING THEM IN FROM CHECK POINT 1 TO CHECK POINT 2. The social secretary is not responsible for letting people in the door. She's not armed and if someone needs to be thrown out, she's not going to be physically removing anyone. Peter King is an ass who is trying to keep his name out there. He's the last idiot Republican left in NY. Hey Peter, why don't you worry about those idiots up there in the 5 towns who keep voting for morons like you. Don't worry about Whitehouse security. THAT'S THE SECRET SERVICE
S JOB! You're not the President and you never will be. I'm sure those people in your district are just itching to hear from Rogers so they can finally move on. Too bad you don't have the power to compell Rogers to do anything!

Maybe you should read my entire post? I am not out to get Ms. Rogers I just think she's subpar. I know she's not responsible for the lapse in security, and I don't think she should be called much less forced to testify. But she also changed procedures in a way that ultimately made it harder for the SS (which is why they have now been changed back to the way they were), and she definitely was not on the job at the time, but enjoying the festivities as a guest.

I like Obama. I voted, donated, canvassed, and all the rest of it, but it does seem like she let him down for no good reason.

I am certainly biased, as I have had friends who work at the WH and it's a grueling, no let down kind of place. You don't realize, perhaps, how much the "image" of the president is propped up by this kind of devotion to work on the part of WH staff. I happen to think Obama deserves as much from his staff as his predecessors received. You can calm down now.

Since when does the minority have subpoena power? It no longer requires a vote of the full committee?

He doesn't. He is just using this stunt to force Obama to invoke executive power so he can bring him down to George Bush's level. He has no interest in actually getting the truth, much less ensuring the security of the president.

So let's see, an Inspector General in San Diego (I believe) gets canned for doing his job, and the Social Secretary gets Presidential privilege for not doing hers. And we're lecturing Af-Pak on corruption? Tsk.

First, it was Sacramento, not San Diego and second, the board members asked the President to remove him but, I digress. What does this have to do with this story? Or do you have conversational A.D.D ? Still pissed about that election? Get over it Dear!

hacks and fools

Since black people as FOX News regularly implies, like people from other countries, all know one another, have the crack sleuths of the Rethuglican/media social scene wondered if Tiger Woods asked White House social secretary Desiree Rogers to plan his late-night, bare-foot, low speed driveway accident?

Eh. King is just mad that the people who got through were not his Aryan Nation rentboys. The whole purpose of Republicans wanting details on how this happened is to exploit a hole in security to get White Power assassins close to the President. When the Southern Traitor Cracker Party claims to be looking after the best interests of a black man, all they want is info on how to best carry out a lynching. And to be quite honest, considering we know Bush stacked the rest of the government with fifth columnists, I don't expect the Secret Service to stop them if they tried.
