Rep. Parker Griffith (R-AL), who announced yesterday that he was switching parties, said today that he left the Democratic party because he was no longer welcome there.

"I felt the far left tilt of the Democratic party no longer welcomed me or my ideas," Griffith said today on Fox News.

Watch:

CQ Politics reports that Griffith commissioned a general election poll in his district, the results of which he saw before making his announcement. His office, however, declined to disclose the numbers.

Griffith announced the switch yesterday, saying he felt the GOP better represents his values.

He will likely face two Republican challengers and at least one Democrat.

Lord... some days I think if both parties purged all the morons from their ranks there would only be about 10 people left in the House of Representatives.

So 538 has this interesting statistical analysis suggesting (simplifying a bit here) that relative to his district, Griffith is actually to the right of the average Republican.
So if the Democratic party didn't actually want him or his ideas... um... maybe there's a reason.

"I felt the far left tilt of the Democratic party no longer welcomed me or my ideas," Griffith said.

But the worthless POS was more than happy to welcome the $1 million he got from the party in last year's election.

They invented DDT to deal with vermin like that.

Maybe 'cos your ideas included actively sabotaging the health care bill in October... and berating the speaker in public. Gee, I wonder why they rejected your ideas!

Good luck, buddy... I'm donating to your primary challenger...

You are right. Turns out the "far left"--and by "far left" I can only assume we are talking about the vast majority of Americans that supported the policies you opposed--didn't want you either.

It's nice that he broke the news on the official news channel of the Republican Party.

I'm dragging a comment I made below up to this thread:

Folks interested in following this AL-05 story as it continues to unfold might want to follow a wonderful (IMHO) local progressive AL blog, Left in Alabama, whose contributors are excellent representatives for the always besieged and outnumbered lefties in deep, deep red Alabammy.

L-i-A blog-keeper and primary poster mooncat was invited for an on-air discussion with the wingnut host of a Huntsville-area radio program, who is not happy at the prospect of this blatant opportunist polluting the essence of his Republican party. Check out mooncat's post-interview comment at 7:36:54 in this post - looks like some old GOP opposition research might just make its way into the hands of folks willing to oppose this party-changer.

Since posting that comment, I see that the top post at L-i-A now says that Ron Sparks (D) has expressed interest in the AL-05 race. In the past this guy has been the Great Hope for Alabama progressives, who have been cruelly teased before by rumors/hints of his entrance into other races. We'll see if he has any interest in this race soon - I think I read over there that the filing deadline is sometime in March.

This louse will probably be beaten in the GOP primary in his district. All's well that end's well.

Given that Griffith voted even against the Lily Ledbetter act, yes, we don't want his ideas. Neither does the 21st century.
