Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) told colleagues in a closed-door Democrats caucus meeting today he "regrets" that his positions on the health care reform bill has made the process a tough one for his former colleagues in the Democratic party. But Lieberman emphasized he did not say he was sorry for what he's done.

From The Hill:

"I just said I know it's been difficult for people and I regretted it, it's been difficult for all of us, I said," Lieberman said.

Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) gave TPMDC a similar account of the Lieberman's statement in the meeting:

"One thing that he acknowledged, which was important, was how difficult this has been for people on both sides of it," Casey said of Lieberman. "I was struck by how human that moment was--it wasn't a debate about, well this is what I believe, on one element of a public option compromise."

"It wasn't even about policy," Casey added. "It was more about, two things, one more about acknowledging the conflict, and trying to understand how other people feel, and, secondly, the stakes that are involved here in this bill."

President Obama was at the caucus meeting. Afterwards, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said he would let Lieberman characterize the moment, but he confirmed that Lieberman rose to address the caucus his health care positioning has often thrown into chaos over the past several months.

"Senator Lieberman spoke about what he saw was positive in the bill, the concerns that he had," Gibbs said. "I will let Sen Lieberman tell you how he concluded. The president didn't address him directly. Sen. Lieberman made a statement to the caucus on where he was on the legislation."

Lieberman may not think he said "sorry," but The Hill reports others in the room with him felt like he did:

One senior Democrat in the meeting took Lieberman's comments as an apology although Lieberman did not actually say "sorry."

I hope the Democratic Caucus votes to remove him as chair of the Oversight of Homeland Security Committee (if that's the procedure), and then explains in a written statement how very much they regret how difficult it will be for Joe.

But they won't. Joe operates with impunity.

I don't know whether or not you were kidding about the remark about Weiner, but here's a gag-inducing quote from an article on the NYT website today, talking about Lieberman's former (and fairly recent) support for a buy-in to Medicare:

“What I was proposing was that they have an option to buy into Medicare early,” Mr. Lieberman says on a video distributed by Democrats on Monday.

In the interview [with the New York Times on Monday], he did not dispute that he once supported the idea but said he had not recalled having done so, or the context, until Mr. Reid’s office confronted him about it.

He caught the Alberto Gonzalez memory hole disease, I guess.

It is stunning to hear anyone who voted for Obama be so narrow-minded and whine about health care or Lieberman being the only issue that matters. What about stem cell research, environmental laws based on science rather than theocracy, world respect, the stimulus that is working, etc.?? "Yeah, health care does not have the public option so I want to let the Republicans further destroy our nation's economy, women's rights, decisions based on science..." Sorry, but that is just plain ignorance.

you are so right but you will just have to bear the burden of knowing how difficult it is to reason with ignorant folks who actually thought that since we are the only first world country without a decent and affordable health care system that does not put profits before peoples' lives that the country might get something other than a system that makes the insurance people richer.
Yeah, you are right.
Just a few ignorant know nothings that also thought that maybe the obama administration would be open but who need to realize that secrecy is really the best way to rule a country and that supporting Bush policies really are best.
and how could they not be thankful and have their hats in their hands when they hear about winning hearts and minds in the big A country where people change sides overnight and it is a country that appears to exist in the old testament.Instead they should cry with joy in anticipation of hearing about the light at the end of the tunnel.
But what about the ignorance of thinking that Obama was quoting Orwell last week when he told the Nobel crowd that sometimes war really is peace. Just ignorance, I mean how could these people not know that Nobel made a fortune through explosives?
And in this holiday season how could they be so ignorant that they do not understand that keeping people locked up forever without regard for the great writ is fine. because a con law professor says its fine.
the old saying that ignorance is bliss just doesn't work for these people.

And BTW, we ignoramuses don't view the stimulus as any great victory either. Obama's own chief economic advisor recognized that it would take closer to 1.2 trillion to fill the output gap but Obama asked for nothing close to that and then watered it down with ineffective corporate tax cuts. Working? I guess if you call 10% unemployment working ...

As another ignorant asshole, I second everything you say. Yes, Nobel made a fortune through explosives. And he was so embarrassed and ashamed by it he took his fortune and used it to create an endowment in perpetuity to award people every year who advance peace.

So, really, your decision to raise that as a point in your post is disingenuous at best, and more likely just plain ignorant. Thanks for playing, though.

Dear fellow Democrats (I mean Ben and Evan, the rest of you are socialists):

I regret that I have made this hard for you (I meant to make it impossible) but I am confident that our differences can be bridged (if you do what I say). Policy issues are often very complex (as much as we can make them) and, for that reason, it is difficult to capture that which is best (for me) for our country in a simple statement (which is why I am now saying the opposite of all of my previous simple statements). You know how I feel about all of my longstanding friends (you also know what I think of you jerks in here) and I hope that our differences will make us (me) stronger rather than driving us apart (losing my Chairmanship). I look forward to our continuing work (so I can continue to screw you and laugh up my sleeve when Rahm tells Harry to give me anything I want!).

Some older cultures shunned people that comitted dispictable acts. I think shunning is appropriate for Lieberman. Just cut him off, ignore him as if he does not exist. Do not give him press or any attention at all. Strip him of his positions. He has not only thwarted the Senate process, but he has done so to the detriment of the people in his state and across the nation. He is an embarrassment to the human species. There are not political decisions. These are crimes against the people. If a man is dying of thirst and you withhold water, you are a murderer. If a man needs medical care and your actions mean he is denied access to care, you are just as guilty. It's so past time to call these cretins out.

Lieberman didnt make health reform 'hard', he made it meaningless.
And, if the dems are foolish enough to vote for this mess, he also
made the dems the minority once again.
health care reform as proposed by the Senate guarantees (mandates)
taxpayers become private health insurance customers, guarantees
another corporate bailout, and squeezes taxpayers more and more.
For the sake of your election, democrats, kill this bill. You will be
voted out out out out and out for the catastrophe you have created
for the American people - they know how screwed they have
been by the Democrats. Hell, this is a Republican bill and could have
easily have been done without all the BS the Dems have put the nation
through. It is not a 'compromise'; it is a farce. Everyone knows that.
You cannot fool people and make them think differently. It is clearly
and simply a farce perpetrated by the Democrats.

Who the hell you trying to kid, Lieberman?

From Huffington Post:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/15/lieberman-liberal-enthusi_n_392887.html

"In an interview with the New York Times, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) revealed Tuesday that he decided to oppose a Medicare buy-in in part because liberals like Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) liked it too much.

[I]n the interview, Mr. Lieberman said that he grew apprehensive when a formal proposal began to take shape. [...]

And he said he was particularly troubled by the overly enthusiastic reaction to the proposal by some liberals, including Representative Anthony Weiner, Democrat of New York, who champions a fully government-run health care system.

"Congressman Weiner made a comment that Medicare-buy in is better than a public option, it's the beginning of a road to single-payer," Mr. Lieberman said. "Jacob Hacker, who's a Yale professor who is actually the man who created the public option, said, 'This is a dream. This is better than a public option. This is a giant step.'"

After three more years of this, you won't be able to tell the difference. I guarantee it.

What a pointless and self-defeating remark.

Oh, and extremely stupid too.

Quite suitable in this case

Actually, it was just a pithy, "Fuck yourself," with a penguinlike "Waaak" afterward.

Lieberman is a slug. But the only reason he was in the position to cause so much damage is that there were 5 or 6 other weasel "blue dog" type crooks along with him who sold out to the insurance companies.

I don't see how you can blame the WH or Dems for this. He lost their primary, for instance, but still won. (Thanks, Connecticut! Really fucking good move.) This is the shithole Senate they were handed BY THE VOTERS. We might not like Landreau and Lincoln and Conrad, but that's what you get from places like Arkansas and Lousiana. (Although why we have to get this piece of shit from a blue state like Connecticut is beyond me!).

I'm not against passing the basic bill without the PO. But we should pursue it through other means. Maybe a separate bill that goes throughs reconciliation. We have to pass something that we can build on. IF we wait, we are stuck back laying the groundwork. Essentially, this basic bill could have been passed in 1993 -- just some regulations prohibiting all sorts of abuses by the health cos.

I would love to pass something on the order of a public option that we could build on, and I really liked the Medicare expansion a whole lot better than what was settled on by either chamber as the public option, but I'm not sure I see how we can manage to do that in this Congress. Though I guess reconciliation would be the best hope for that.

It's what a self-centered narcissistic brat like you does best.

Its easy to jump on this benedict arnold senator from cigna and forget that NOT ONE Republican supports health care reform. Not one, when the majority of the country wants it and voted for it in 2008.

Oh I don't forget that at all. If it weren't for Republicans refusing to participate in the process, Joe Lieberman and the conservadems wouldn't be able to hold health care reform hostage.

Joe Lieberman doesn't "regret" a freakin' thing. He is relishing every moment of his importance in this fight, and he is playing one side against another just to feed his ego. As far as I can tell, he is only interested in Joe. I hope his constituents vote his butt out next time.

On the other hand, I live in a totally red state, a small one, and I can call up my senators and representative any time I want to voice my opinion. Fat lot of good it does me. Enzi and Barasso take pride in being obstructionists. Their only saving grace is that nobody pays any attention to them.

Oh, boohoo. Let me dry my tear before I heave. I am sure all of the members of the U.S. Senate applaud Joe's moment of authenticity. Perhaps they even had a group hug -- it's tough choosing between money and the American people.

The humanity in Congress is truly uninspired.

Another worthless (except to his paymasters)corporate pol expects the public to feel bad for what an awkward place he was put in. Just like fascist Berlusconi expects us to feel so bad for getting what he had coming to him. Amazing how these corrupt rich corporate drones want public sympathy...

Nobody would love to extract a pound of flesh more than I, but at the same time, I don't see what has changed significantly that would guarantee improvements if this bill were scuttled. He's not really my intellectual guru, but last night Ed Schultz said something that has echoed my sentiment all along..."DON'T INSULT MY INTELLIGENCE!" I have no idea how it would play politically, but I would really appreciate politicians from the President on down coming out and acknowledging that this fall far short of what the Democrats hoped to accomplish but that it still has merit and the depth of the crisis compels them to vote for this. I would take some comfort in hearing the President say "I recognize that many of our supporters will have suffered financial devastation and still be unable to receive basic health care...perhaps even the loss of their life, but because of the state of our nation and the nature of our politics we are unable to achieve any more than we have." I would be some small comfort if someone sincerely acknowledged what was happening to the uninsured and underinsured. (don't forget that whatever financial help they are offering won't kick in for years) Get real with people (if in fact you actually do see the reality)and don't pat yourselves on the back for throwing a 50 ft rope to people drowning 100 ft away.

I try to follow all the developments but I'll be darned if I can nail down this "31 million people" this bill provides with health care. I suspect it doesn't and if it doesn't, I highly resent journalists and politicians repeating it every 5 minutes without explanation. Let's make sure everyone trading on this isn't getting by with stating as fact that the offer of a government subsidy to reduce health care premiums (with a deductible) by half means that people with no means have health care. If I were offered insurance at $400 a month but I run $100 a month in the hole just trying to keep a roof over my head...you've don't me no favor.

If anyone can explain what it is that 'gives 31 million people coverage' please reply here.

Joe Lieberman just hijacked the entire bill for his own, personal, ego and more important - revenge to the Liberal end of the Democratic party, the end that cares about people and what lack of healthcare is doing to people.

Joe only cares about those corporate interests who paid him to reject as much he could... after all, the state he is from depends on the Health Insurance industry for their economy.

A big F-You to Joe Lieberman but more important - to the whole Senate and Obama, who all caved in. Those people do not care about average Americans. They are there to protect corporate interests (formerly landowners), not the people.

We are NOT a true Democracy.

I know some of you don't want to blame Obama, but truthfully he let his stimulus be diluted and now health care the same; and each battle will be tougher as the minority party gains confidence. And to those of you who feel that we can build on this health care bill, I disagree, because sadly, you will not see this many Dems in the Senate (or House) again. And all will be blamed (fairly or unfairly) on Obama. A true friend of Obama would remind him that he won the election and tell him to stand up for what is right, and the voters and a second term would follow.
