The Republican Party is using Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to attack House Democrats in the wake of her much-derided comment that "the system worked" in response to the near-bombing of Flight 253.

(Napolitano was speaking of the response to the attack after the fact, but her detractors are understandably more focused on the intelligence failures before the event.)

The NRCC has put out a new press release against swing-seat Democrats on the Homeland Security and Government Oversight committees, calling on them to demand that Napolitano testify to Congress: "Will (member name) finally demand answers from Secretary Napolitano, or will (he/she) continue to silently endorse her alarming statement that 'the system worked' in the face of building evidence that the administration is unable to confront serious threats against the American people?"

Interestingly, one of the Dems on the receiving end of this press release is Rep. Chris Carney (PA) -- who was being courted by the GOP last week to switch parties, and even got a phone call from Sen. John McCain. Carney then put out a statement turning down the offer, but also thanking the GOP and declaring "their outreach a sure sign that I have worked in a truly bipartisan manner." Now they're attacking him in a press release. It looks like that courtship was over as quickly as it began.

The full press release is available after the jump.

Here is the version targeting Mary Jo Kilroy (OH). Other Democrats on the target list are: Chris Carney (PA), Steve Driehaus (OH), Bill Foster (IL), Jim Himes (CT), Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ), Eric Massa (NY), Chris Murphy (CT), Bill Owens (NY), Loretta Sanchez (CA) and Dina Titus (NV).

Does (Member Name) Think 'The System Worked?'
Will Homeland Security Committee Dems Line Up Behind Napolitano Statement?

Washington- Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano recently made headlines with her declaration that "the system worked" when a would-be terror attack aboard a Northwest Airlines flight was thwarted thanks to a faulty explosive device. So far, Mary Jo Kilroy has let Napolitano's absurd statement go unchallenged. Given her position on the House Homeland Security Committee, Americans are rightfully wondering what it will take for Kilroy to speak up and demand that Napolitano be held accountable for her words and her agency's glaring oversights.

"Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up an Amsterdam-Detroit airline flight Christmas Day demonstrated that 'the system worked.'

"Asked by CNN's Candy Crowley on 'State of the Union' how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who has been charged with trying to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the jet, Napolitano responded: 'We're asking the same questions.'

"Napolitano added that there was 'no suggestion that [the suspect] was improperly screened.'" (Jonathan Martin, "Napolitano: 'The System Worked,'" Politico, 12/27/09)

"Secretary Napolitano's patently false statements only further the widespread perception that this administration and Democrat-held Congress don't have a strategy to confront the terrorist threat and keep America safe," said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. "Every member of the Homeland Security Committee, including Mary Jo Kilroy should be condemning Janet Napolitano's absurd statements that 'the system worked' and calling for her to testify before congress. So far the silence from Democrats on Capitol Hill on this gravely serious matter has been deafening."

Will Mary Jo Kilroy finally demand answers from Secretary Napolitano, or will she continue to silently endorse her alarming statement that 'the system worked' in the face of building evidence that the administration is unable to confront serious threats against the American people?

The Republicans were in power when we were hit on 911. This doesn't come close. Sorry but, no one was killed and several investigations have begun. One thing is clear. Whatever procedures that were put in place by the Bush administration either were not followed on Friday or they were not good enough. Which of these will be determined in the days and months to come. The Republicans should stop pretending that this was the worst attack on our soil and remember that they were the one's in power when that happened.

Oh, and they should all stop pretending that Napolitano said something she did not. It's a disgrace how the media continues to ignore that she was speaking about what happened after the attempt. Stop trying to blow this out of proportion. It's really quite pathetic.

The people in charge who did not pass on the information from this guy's father about this nutjob balls bomber are obviously to blame as well and the president spoke about it this afternoon. I'm not excusing them. But, unless Obama came into office and put in the procedures that led to this incident, then it's clear that it was policies instituted after 911.

It really doesn't matter. Today Obama came out with a very strong statement that this incident was due to a "human and systemic failure". He also made it very clear that the reason why there was a systemic failure is that very little was changed in the system after 9/11 to improve the system.

As a former military intelligence officer and civilian police officer, I must ask: does this pathetic, haphazard attempt to 'take-down' a civilian airliner, conducted by a non-state actor who is not a member of an organized, armed force roughly analogous to such groups as the Irish Republican Army REALLY that of a disciplined, well trained 'terrorist' or, just those of a criminal with a poorly crafted political agenda?

It's long past time that we stop elevating such culprits to near-legendary status, as if they were somehow what they clearly are not. Might there be a tenuous connection to Al Qaeda, in particular, to its leadership? Possibly, though likely not. Is this a confused, bumbling criminal looking for glory and immortality amongst the ranks of Muslim 'freedom fighters? Only in his own mind, and that of a small number of sympathizers.

We cannot know in advance of every attempt by some hapless individual to act in this manner, nor can we guarantee that no one will take an aerial platform out of the air with explosives other than by grounding all aircraft. On balance, while improvements are always possible—and, mistakes may well have been made in this specific instance—it is patently ridiculous to tie incidents like this or earlier actions such as those of 'shoe bomber' Richard Reid to the coordinated, relatively sophisticated attacks like the ones which occurred on September 11, 2001. Okay: maybe not so sophisticated - but, coordinated, simple and effective, as least as measured by the apparent cost of planning and execution, and the resulting damage.

Just more political posturing by the same sort of folks who were in charge and 'asleep at the switch' when the September 11, 2001 attacks took place.

FWIW, according to Rachel Maddow, Napolitano's comment regarding the system working was specifically directed to events after the explosive failed to detonate. Maddow also noted that Obama, in his comments today, tried to put that into context by saying that, as Napolitano had said, there were no problems with what transpired after the failed attempt but that the fact the bomber was able to get on board a plane with the explosive material was a systemic failure.

I must admit I haven't heard or read Napolitano's entire comment. But, if what Maddow says is true, it's a little surprising that none of the lefty blogs reported it that way.

"But, if what Maddow says is true, it's a little surprising that none of the lefty blogs reported it that way."

Some of them have. Strangely enough, it's odd places like Jake Tapper at ABC who are correcting this BS out of context spin.

Almost everyone else, certainly all of the Beltway Neocon echo chamber spokesmodels and then even the "neutral" dupes like Ruth Marcus, has simply regurgitated it whole, and then if confronted with the lie just says "Oh well come on, we all just know that she "blundered".

That's how DC right wing talking points work, they're like concrete, as the saying goes, once they set they're impossible to change.

If anyone tries to show that a current favorite talking point was entirely based on BS, the Beltway mind rejects it entirely, because "everyone knows" is the most powerful force in the DC universe, certainly more powerful than what actually, you know, happened.

As I posted above, the Bush admin. said exactly the same thing about Richard Reid and there was zip, zilch, of this talk of Tom Ridge having "blundered".

Gosh what a surprise.

Had Bush responded to Tenet's memo warning of an imminent Al Qaeda attack in the U.S. in August, 2001 as quickly as the right wingers did today to Napolitan's comments maybe 3,00 New Yorkers would be alive today.

Napolitano is typcial of the errors of the Obama and company administration. They are reactive toward terror, not proactive. They have no foreign policy that invokes respect form our enemies. No domestic policy that encourages free market and wealth rewarded through hard work. No economic policy that works at helping the main street citizen. No judicial policy that recognizes terrorist for what they are, combatants. No policy which makes the United States proactive in fighting a war on terror. We are reactive and it takes the president 72 hours to react to that by alleging that it took place. No policy that rewards small businesses for creating jobs and building wealth through hard work. Its all geared toward punishing a free market system through higher taxes; unrestrained spending; corruption in congress; vote buying and sweetheart deals to reward only congressmen; reduced medical care and quality care; penalities for having insurance policies; higher taxes on payrolls in small businesses. Nothing this Obama WH has done gives the American citizen confidence toward a better tomorrow. There is nothing but dismay and punishment by our government toward building a future for our children.

Oh stop. It took the boob six days to respond publicly to the shoe bomber.

Is there really anybody sitting around and waiting to hear what the President says about a failed attempt other than pundits and partisans?

Not to mention, we're providing the wherewithal for Yemen to bomb Al Qaeda sites.

Now, there may well be more that needs to be done. But the notion that Obama is sitting around and saying "Pass the grey poupon" is just ridiculous.

Americans and the rest of the world has tuned out the Republican noise. This is why the only place you will find their 'entertainment' comments is on blogs and tabloids like FAUX. Every time they 'exaggerate' a situation or offer more lies and deceit, it only makes them look even worse.

They have no credibility left to loose. With their current being on the 'elite' idea of 'education/intelligence', all they can draw to them are the 'under-educated' radical extremists.

Really, who in their right mind would follow a group, where their 'complaint' was that the other group was 'elite' because they were educated/intelligent. So at this point their 'war' is on 'intelligence'.

It is so very bizarre to hear our home grown right-wing extremists, complain about extremist from other countries, as if there is a difference. One group kills people in the name of GOD(blowing up people in buildings/cars), the other group kills people in the name of GOD(burning churches, dragging people behind cars, hangings, shooting doctors).....and that was just 2009.

Exactly. Today we were treated to the hysterical observations of Peter King, Jim DeMint, Peter Hoekstra, Dan Burton, Tim Pawlenty, Steve King, John McCain, Lindsey Graham and, somewhat surprisingly, Tom Ridge. Oh yes -- and, through the wonder of end of the year retrospectives, Joe "You lie!" Wilson.

And I had to wonder: Is there a one of them that isn't a complete, raving lunatic?

I've not heard anyone call for Napolitano's resignation yet (they likely have)but my guess is it's coming.

As soon as I saw the statement on Sunday I knew she was in trouble. As impressive as her Red state numbers may have been I must say I've found her rather underwhelming and without a feel for the game as it were. I understand what she was saying, it just wasn't appropriate for the aftermath on a busy holiday week.

So with that in mind I hope Nap' learns from this. If not I'm afraid she'll be putting her boss in some more untidy situations. Some people will likely be fired or transferred because of this near miss. If Obama plays this correctly --even from Hawaii-- he can recover and obviate what is likely to be a fiasco in the RW and mainsteam press.

$$$ Has anyone seen the money shot yet? That of the suspect at the gate trying to board (apparently without a passport?). You would have thought that would have turned up, from Amsterdam?

Good question. Frankly, I've been skeptical of Haskell's story. Not that it didn't happen, but that the person he saw was the would-be bomber. He was asked how sure he was it was the same guy, and he said he was sure, there was only one black guy on his flight.

Excuse me? How does that prove the one you saw apparently trying to get on without a passport is the same guy you saw on the plane? Maybe the guy trying to board DIDN'T GET ON!

The republicans are giving this guy way too much power by elevating him to some kind of force of nature that can hold a nation of 350 million people hostage. I only wish the American people could see that, sadly, they cannot.

Or, put another way, is he holding us hostage any more than balloon boy did? Time will tell, I suppose, but I'm thinking the appropriate response is for TSA and DHS to do whatever needs to be done and for the rest of us to wait for the next scandal.

Oh nice.

"(Napolitano was speaking of the response to the attack after the fact, but her detractors are understandably more focused on the intelligence failures before the event.)"

She was clearly and unambiguously speaking of how they got information out and etc after the attack happened, and yet the Republicans are "understandably" pretending that her "the system worked" statement was about letting the attack happen in the first place.

Because taking things ridiculously out of context and pretending that they mean something that they don't is such an "understandable" scam, why, we all do it.

People can believe that she was tone-deaf, they can say all kinds of things, but this talking point is now unstoppable, and is based on a lie.

Sigh.

So when Tom Ridge said the same thing about Richard Reid, when he in fact praised the actions of other passengers as part of how the system is supposed to work, this was "much-derided" also, right? Everyone picked up "the system worked" as a punch line and screamed about it then too, right? Left, right, and center, all latched onto it, right?

When anyone tries to tell me that the DC Beltway media establishment is anything but a right wing echo chamber, I just laugh, these days.

IOKIYAR.
