The National Republican Senatorial Committee is making a direct appeal to donors on the grounds that President Obama doesn't understand the "scary" threats posed by foreigners who try to blow up airliners, and Democrats are infuriated.

An NRSC fundraising email sent yesterday doesn't pull any punches. "Even more scary was knowing this country was one faulty detonator away from an American airliner being blown out of the sky," the letter reads.

Remember right after the inauguration, it was revealed President Obama no longer wanted to acknowledge the 'global war on terror' and referred to terrorist acts as 'man-made disasters'? Back then you and I knew that showed a remarkable lack of understanding of the threat America faced but in the face of what nearly happened a couple days, it is even more infuriating.

To you and me and our friends throughout America, the healthcare bill is a man-made disaster. And when a foreigner tries to blow up an airliner, it is an attempted terrorist attack.

Now Dems are punching back.

"Republicans have gone beyond crass political opportunism - using a potential terrorist attack as an opportunity to play partisan games and raise campaign cash - it's unbelievable - and the American people are not going to tolerate it," says a new statement from DNC spokesman Hari Sevugan. "Let's be clear - we will not be lectured to by Republicans who are more interested in scoring cheap political points and cashing-in on an attempted terrorist attack than in protecting America. And certainly not when it was these same Republicans who implemented a radical foreign policy that alienated our allies, emboldened our enemies, depleted our resources, distracted our focus and who made the nation less secure."

You can read the entire email below the fold, along with the DNC response.

Dear Supporter,

Do you need any more evidence that Republicans need to pick up Senate seats? Let's review just the last 8 days:

The Democrats jammed a healthcare bill down the throats of the American people that cuts Medicare by $500 billion, raises taxes by $400 to $500 million and increases insurance premiums all while using your tax dollars to pay for abortions. Like me, I am sure watching them cut backroom deal after backroom deal was enough to make you sick.

Even more scary was knowing this country was one faulty detonator away from an American airliner being blown out of the sky. Remember right after the inauguration, it was revealed President Obama no longer wanted to acknowledge the "global war on terror" and referred to terrorist acts as "man-made disasters"? Back then you and I knew that showed a remarkable lack of understanding of the threat America faced but in the face of what nearly happened a couple days, it is even more infuriating.

To you and me and our friends throughout America, the healthcare bill is a man-made disaster. And when a foreigner tries to blow up an airliner, it is an attempted terrorist attack.

Now more than ever we need a check in the Senate to stop the radical Obama agenda down until we elect a Republican President in 2012.

Get involved today. Tomorrow night at midnight, we close the books on 2009. Donate $10 to help us close out the year strong, and forward this to 5 of your friends so we can get their email and keep them up to date with what is happening in DC.

Together we can make a difference for the better of this country.

Thanks for all you do to hold President Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi accountable.

Rob Jesmer
NRSC Executive Director

P.S. We are so close to making our goal for this year, will you please give $5 or $10 by midnight tomorrow so we have the money necessary to fight the Obama machine?

P.P.S. Visit our Facebook page and sign up for our Twitter feed so we can let you know what is happening in DC on a moment's notice.

"The President's top priority is defending our country. He wakes up every day and goes to bed every night as the Commander-In-Chief of a nation in two wars and spends the hours in between focused on providing for our troops, restoring our alliances and determined to defeat our enemies.

"Republicans may want to focus on playing partisan politics with our national security and terrorist threats, but the President and this Administration will continue to focus on securing the country we love. We recommend they stop trying to fill their coffers and join us."

"An NRSC fundraising email has left Dems infuriated"

Which Dems would those be? Or does TPM just regurgitate every GOP press release?

Yes and the dumbest thing Cheney said was his complaint about the time lapse before President Obama spoke. As I recall, Bush was in Texas on vacation and did not comment on the shoe bomber for nearly a week. One wonders if Cheney ever checks on how dull Bush will look by comparison when he mouths off like this. By comparison, Obama looked absolutely timely to me, a Republican. My party should ask Cheney to just shut up. I found the constant Bush vacations to be an embarrassment and Cheney's comments just brought that to the attention of everyone.

Our President is likely smarter than each of the 100 Senators, even Franken. I remember McCain's dumbass accusations in the campaign about what Obama supposedly didn't understand. Yuh! Talk about outmatched, huh?

But why doesn't Obama understand this foreigner thing? That's easy, because he's black, a foreigner at heart from Indonesia, Kenya, and Al Qaeda itself. He's with them. This is dog-whistling, and it will work among the very worst that U.S. has to offer.

Where's the the push back from the Dems?

The craven, hypocritical Republican operatives can be demolished with some tough, fact-based rebuttal arguments.

Anyone trying to raise money from a terrorist attack is slimey at best. Profiting from terror should be illegal, no matter what it is used for. How low can they sink?

dear me, the 'Democrats are infuriated'!

Perhaps after Harry writes a sternly worded letter, he should go throw a few punches into his pillow in order to calm down.

DISGUSTING

The GOP never quits trying to profit from terrorism

raising terror alerts in an election season
fundraising letters immediately after a terror attack
terrorist scaremongering and smearing to crush political opponents

These people are a horrible stain on the history of the GOP. They really should change the name of the party to tea baggers or something else. They really aren't true republicans and they are certainly unamerican. Wishing for a terror attack and playing off a terror attack for political gain? That's not american.

Republican of 2000 to the present. I don't even think in the b-movie actor's time in power he would have done this. Nixon and Ford would definitely never done this. What happened to the republican party? It's really bizarre when you think about it.

Interesting. It seems the Republicans and Terrorist have a common interest. They both share a perceived benefit/Profit in an attempt to bring down the American Government and do harm to American People in the name of 'GOD'.

The question is whether republicans should be allowed to have knowledge of our Homeland Security plans. This seems like a great risk to the country, since republicans see any 'terrorist' attack on America, as a benefit to their cause.

So the NRSC admits they have tracking code placed in their email that relays to them the contacts you send to?

Republican Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tx) is so stupid, he is a racist, lying against President Obama, about his terrorist status. But Sen.Cornyn, was never against President Bush, who on his 911, made no preparations for or paid no attention to menace of terrorism in the first nine months of his presidency which was his act of negligence which eventually lead to the worst tragedy on American and our people

Just for fun, go look up H.R.1 ("Implementing 9/11 Commission's Recommendations")from the 110th Congress, Jan. 2007.

It passed 299-128. No Democrat voted against it, but Hoekstra and Boehner did.
