President Obama called on bipartisanship from Congress to help rebuild the economy, saying that spurring hiring and economic growth are not issues belonging to one party.

Obama, who had just finished a meeting with Democratic and Republican Congressional leaders in the Cabinet Room to detail his latest job creation idea, said he was calling on them to extend relief to state governments and seniors and to support his plan for credits to homeowners making their homes energy efficient.

"I am absolutely committed to working with anybody who is willing to do the job to make sure that we can rebuild our economy and make sure that Americans across the country regardless of political persuasion," Obama said.

The president said he is "confident" the economy can recover but it "will require some work and cooperation." He added that he hopes "as we enter the holiday season the leaders I just met with will feel the same."

In fact, some of those leaders enjoyed the holiday fares at the White House Christmas party earlier this week. Obama was overheard teasing House Minority Leader John Boehner about the White House egg nog.

From the pool report:

As we entered, POTUS appeared to be in mid-banter about the congressional holiday party at the White House. ``I saw Boehner drinking egg nog,'' the POTUS said. ``I was drinking wine,'' House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio,'' responded.

"My hope is that as we move forward that we can do so together," Obama said, suggesting Congress should be able to forge consensus on the economy.

Obama announced his administration is winding down the Troubled Assets Relief Program, which he said "has served its original purpose" is cost less than expected. He said he'd use the funds to pay down the deficit.

"More will need to be done to put our nation on a firm fiscal footing," Obama told the press, shortly before he was to leave for Oslo to accept the Nobel Peace Prize at a Thursday ceremony.

"I'm not going to rest until every American who is looking for work can find a job," he said.

Later, lawmakers said the talk was productive and focused on how to get banks to loan more money to small businesses.

"Everybody in the room agreed we need to take action to get more people back to work," House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said on Fox News following the meeting.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters that Obama told Republicans in the room to "stop trying to frighten the American people."

But Republicans weren't happy.

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) said on Fox that what he heard from Obama was "an insistence that somehow we need to keep spending money that we don't have."

He said "we ought not to be doing" what Obama suggested on TARP.

Cantor said he disagreed with Obama saying the GOP is scaring Americans.

"It's the policies and the agenda of this administration that actually are scaring" people and "causing businesses to stand on the sidelines."

Good luck with that. The GOP would rather see us all fail than a Democratic president appear to succeed.

And everyone knows it. Obama should keep stressing bipartisanship if only to draw attention to the Republican obstructionism.

I'm sorry but especially with a direct and personal issue like economy and jobs I don't think many Americans care about the semantics. Hopefully, the POTUS and his team will cut down the unemployment numbers noticeably in the next six months- before we go to polls.

Its clear the stimulus and bailouts have performed well so far.

"Its clear the stimulus and bailouts have performed well so far."

I'm assuming you meant that as a snark. In reality, they have performed well. We've gone from over 700,000 jobs lost in January to only 11,000 in November. GDP is up again. Unemployment seems to have peaked. By almost any measure the economy is improving.

Or have you forgotten the predictions of 20% unemployment that were seriously being made a year ago?

Cantor is quick to criticize the President but when asked what his own ideas for stimulating job growth are he has no response.

Cantor always lacks the ability to give an idea for any of the subjects he discusses. I heard him on CNN a few days ago and wolf asked him about 5 times what's your idea to fix jobs and he just reverted yo the same old bs an refused to actually say anything positive or useful. How people don't see this I can't understand

Bailout and stimulus to big banks and big corps would have already created jobs, not to mention millions of them "green" jobs. No?

Last minute huddle before the common man goes into the voting booth. What a joke?

Obama economic "think" tank has led democrats to dive headfirst into a empty swimming pool.

Bipartisanship? I guess the POTUS is still not off the...huh..

Tell us ole wise one: what would you do to make job miraculously appear. It's easy to complain but Please, give us the magic bullet.

As one of the 65% of Americans who have their retirement and savings in the stock market, I like it better at 10,500 than at 6,500. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Good for you the stock market is really doing well. But don't hold your breath, especially if the Dubai debt concerns have Carl Lewis legs on them.

It's good for 65% of Americans that the stock market is doing better.

But you didn't answer my question: what do you suggest? how would you solve this problem?

Don't have an answer? Your skills are limited to bitching and moaning? Are you a Republican?

If an average voter were faced with the choice of: [a] his or her congresscritter spending funds to give him or her a JOB... vs.; [b] returning it to some green-shaded "bottom line", so as to help alleviate some intangible "defecit"... which one do you think she or he would choose?

Next question: WHY HAVE THE DEMOCRATS NOT PROMOTED IT IN THOSE TERMS?

(I don't even want to hear the answer.)

Why is the word "bipartisan" in any of its forms even permitted anywhere in the White House anymore?

It ought to be grounds for impeachment. Or demotion.

Does Obama think the word generates anything other than yawns or guffaws from either side of the aisle anymore? Is he really that clueless?

You know there are plenty of Americans who want Congress and the President to work TOGETHER. It ain't to impress the Left nor the Right.

As someone mentioned, this is a good way for all to see what the GOP has to offer.

Reaching across the aisle is something the President campaigned on, heavily. So now you approve of him breaking campaign promises?

Anyone who thinks the President is clueless about the partisan bickering in DC is clueless.

Bipartisanship? $300B? For fucks sake, is he trying to lose this one before it's even fully rolled out?

If you want $300B, ask for $500B. Hasn't the Stim and Healthcare proven that? We know that this $300B will turn into $200B with all the tax stuff left in while the actually spending gets cut back.

Bipartisan? 0 GOP will vote for this, other than President Snow and Vice President Collins if they're allowed to cut back the spending and lard it up with more tax cuts.

The country doesn't give a shit about Bipartisanship at this point. They want action. This fetish is dragging the Administration down.

As POTUS, I can understand why Obama seeks 'bi-partisanship'. It's an image thing: He needs to stress that he's president of ALL the people.

But as a political strategy and as a negotiating tactic, it's a proven bust. The GOP has proven that they'll only negotiate in bad faith -- and throw every rhetorical sucker punch they can along the way.

Mr. Obama. Stop asking me for money. Really, I want a refund. Jobs? That should have been last year's goal.
