A new survey by Public Policy Polling (D) shows Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD), a Democrat from a red state, running ahead but nevertheless in a competitive race for her 2010 re-election campaign.
Herseth Sandlin has a 49% approval rating, to 38% disapproval, well ahead of President Obama's 41%-52% rating in this state. She is ahead of Republican state Rep. Blake Curd by a 52%-31% margin, but is in a much closer race against Secretary of State Chris Nelson by only 46%-39%. The margin of error is ±3.7%.
From the pollster's analysis: "Herseth Sandlin's standing is a good microcosm of the difficulties Democrats face this year in Republican areas. Even though she is personally popular and did vote against the health care bill, she still only has a single digit lead against a relatively unknown opponent. If Nelson turns out to be a good candidate this race will be highly competitive but it's hard to say there's really anything Herseth Sandlin should be doing differently -- it's just not going to be easy in places where Obama and the Congressional leadership are so unpopular."

Speaking as a South Dakota resident and lifelong Progressive, Chris Nelson will wipe the floor with Herseth-Sandlin.
Their are two halves to our state - east and west of the Missouri. The west will go for ANY Republican by a margin of close to 70%-30%. The only thing that holds that number even that close is turnout among Native American voters. They vote 80-90% for the Democratic candidate. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin is no friend of the Native voters and turnout amongst them is likely to be low. The eastern side of the state is pretty evenly split Dem's and Republicans.
The ONLY way Democrats win statewide office is through their family name, as in Stephanie Herseth's case, or because they are holdovers from a past era of farm-based support for Democrats, as in Tim Johnson's case. The State government is little more than a gathering of the state GOP leaders and their lackeys.
Herseth-Sandlin's grandfather and father were solid Democrats. She is a useless tool who traded on their name to get the nomination and then only won because her opponent killed a motorcyclist and went to jail. AND she still almost lost.
Last cycle the major Republicans in the state stayed out of the race, serving up a token opponent in Chris Lien (member of a wealthy and prominent west-river family). They were afraid to lose given Bush's ineptitude and Obama's coattails. This is a totally different election.
Herseth-Sandlin votes Republican on everything that matters. Left-leaning Democrats like myself are abandoning her in droves. It should be noted that we can't primary her. The state Democratic party is, for all intents and purposes, dead at the top. There are NO other options.
That being said, I'll take a Republican over her any day. At least I know they'll screw me. She will lie and pretend otherwise just to get elected. I intend to actively oppose her candidacy by pointing out her flaws to everyone who will listen. I figure I can personally tell hundreds i not thousands of left-leaning voters of her uselessness.
My father, who in his sixties, has never even considered voting Republican, went so far as to call her office (something he has never done) and let them know how he will be working for her opponent - any opponent, after her vote against health care.
This one may seem close or leaning D, but this seat will flip to the R's. Bet on it.

I hate people like you, because you don't consider the consequences of your pig-headed arrogant purism. ANY democrat will always be better than ANY republican, and to claim otherwise is asinine. If you feel shes been a disappointment, odds are you never really understood what she likely campaigned on to begin with.

"Anyone but Obama 2012" = your credibility is zero!
Here is a clue: stem cell research, environmental laws based on science rather than theocracy, world respect returned, stimulus package that is actually working...just for starters.

Wow. Stem cell research. I'm quivering with excitement.
Environmental laws, blah blah blah. No energy reform/cap and trade (also known as the one that matters).
Stimulus package that's working. 10% unemployment. Working great. But I guess the banks are showing a profit now.
World respect. Can I get a voucher for that so I can get some health care? Maybe Obama could chip in out of his Nobel Prize.
Obama has failed to pass any of his MAJOR promises:
Cap and Trade
Guantanamo
FISA
Government Transparency
Health Care
And did you forget the two biggest ones:
IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN
Get a clue. Anyone but Obama 2012 (preferably a Dem).

Better how? She DOES NOT vote with the Democratic party on anything of consequence. Aside from keeping Pelosi in power.
As an example of what she campaigns on... her Facebook for her campaign touts her support for health care reform... which she voted against. She is a lying piece of trash. She will lose, and I will celebrate.
What good are 60 Dems and the WH and the House exactly?
Gitmo is still open, FISA is still there, health care reform is now reditribute my money to the insurance companies plan, we're still in Iraq, we're surging in Afghanistan, the SOA is still open, Dick Cheney isn't in jail, and on and on and on.
Seems to me bad democrats are the problem. It is easier to run against a Republican than trying to primary out an incumbent.
