The new Rasmussen poll of the Florida Senate race, in which the establishment Republican moderate Gov. Charlie Crist is in a tight race for the GOP nomination against the more conservative former state House speaker Marco Rubio, finds that the more electable of the two candidates is...Marco Rubio!

Both candidates lead Rep. Kendrick Meek, the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, but Rubio leads by more than Crist does. Crist is ahead of Meek by 42%-36%, but Rubio is ahead by 49%-35%. The margin of error is ±3%.

The pollster's analysis explains that Crist could still make up the difference if he does end up winning the nomination: "The reason for the difference is that 79% of conservatives support Rubio but only 62% say Crist can count on their vote. Twenty-four percent (24%) of conservatives say they'd prefer either a third party option or are undecided. If Crist were to win the nomination, it is likely that many of those voters would end up supporting him over Meek."

But what if they didn't? What if they refused to give Crist the satisfaction, and stayed home or voted for a third-party candidate in protest? In the wake of the NY-23 special election, this sort of thing shouldn't be dismissed.

Equally important- How many Crist supporters would vote for Meek or stay home if Rubio won the primary?

In either case, we need a stronger Dem candidate down there than Meek. Or, as I pointed out in the last FL-Senator thread, we'll have a Senator Rubio on our hands.

Meek is the invisible candidate. And the Dems have nothing better to offer than Meek, their bench in Florida is embarrassingly weak. Meek is a terrible candidate - never ran for anything, took over his mothers safe seat when she retired and never had to run because it's such a safe Dem seat. He'll get worked over and eaten alive by the Rubio machine.

Looking in that poll, Meek gets 35-36% in both, so basically it's just Rubio supporters trying to work the poll.

Dems had better get moving. Rubio as candidate provides perfect nimrod to knock down, but somebody has to step and do it or it will be Senator Rubio for sure.

Get used to "Senator Rubio". He can raise lots of money, has a strong base among Cubans in South Florida, and will destroy Crist in the conservative upstate areas.

I don't think Meek can get elected to anything outside his district. And being African-American won't help in a state where there is still alot of racism, even among northern transplants and the Cuban community. In fact, there is a history of friction between Cubans and Africans going back to the Overtown race riot thirty years ago.
