Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has canceled a fund-raiser scheduled for this Saturday in New Orleans.

An aide to Reid's re-election campaign confirms to TPMDC that the fund-raiser, said to start at $1,000 a plate, has been canceled in order to keep the Senate working through the weekend.

Republicans took to the Senate floor this morning to demand that Reid keep the Senate in session over the weekend.

"The majority leader said we'd be working every weekend. We take him at his word. We expect to be here this weekend -- and we look forward to it," said Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Sens. John McCain and Mike Enzi joined the call.

The fund-raiser, hosted by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and James Carville, was to be held at the home of David Voelker, chairman of the Louisiana Recovery Authority. Tickets went from $1,000 up to $4,800.

At the news, the National Republican Senatorial Committee blasted out an email saying, "After his huffing and puffing about working weekends to ram his massive health care bill through Congress, we're glad to hear that Harry Reid has decided to stay in Washington instead of jetting off to the Big Easy."

God, is there any disgusting, rotten, cheating thing a Republican won't do?

I am glad he did. I thought it was tone deaf for him to do go to a fundraiser in the middle of the biggest battle that the Democratic party is facing for the past 70 years which is to pass health care reform.

Seriously. He announces that they'll work through the weekends, except when he has to do fundraising?

That level of cluelessness has to be on purpose.

I agree. The Senate, the slowest government institution, needs to fire on every cylinder it has to get this done.

Yes indeedy. I have to say that there's at least some sense of urgency on the Hill, in stark contrast to the atmosphere back in 1993-94. In those days the choice between working on weekends on health care reform and attending a $1000 a plate fundraiser would have been a proverbial no-brainer.

Agreed.

This is just another reason why I favor term limits for Senators--you lose touch with just common sense.

Somebody post a guard outside the Senate men's rooms so he can go in and haul McConnell's butt out of there if he tries to go grab a nap during the weekend sessions.

ok so i created an account just to comment on this.

i care a lot about health care reform and ive admittedly had a low opinion of reid in the past.

but before u give him too hard a time, reid is about to lose reelection in a big way. he really needs the money.

please explain to me how it would do any good for the dem leader in the senate to get voted out of office?

that said, im glad theyre working through the weekend. just cut him some slack. jeez...

Agree. He is in the middle of the firing line from both left and right. And he's trying to get a damn thing passed. Just forcing in the progressive parts and ignoring the rest will not work if he wants 60 votes. Now, I am all for reconciliation and think he's giving too much credence to a stupid Senate rule. But he IS trying.

This will be reported in Faux News as :

Reid missed his own fundraiser because of low expected turnout. This proves he can't get re-elected and the TeaParty candidate will take over
