Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) went on quite a tear on the Senate floor. McCain is the author of the first proposed Republican amendment to the Senate health care bill, which, if passed, would send the legislation back to the Finance Committee and have it stripped of hundreds of billions of dollars in Medicare savings, most of which come from ending over-payments to private insurers under Medicare Advantage.

"I will eagerly look forward to hearing from the authors of this legislation as to how they can possibly achieve a half a trillion dollars in cuts without impacting existing Medicare programs negatively and eventually lead to rationing of health care in this country," McCain said.

In all likelihood, his amendment would kill the bill. But in any case, it's peculiar that he finds cuts to Medicare so anathema--after all McCain himself proposed larger cuts many times in the past, including during the 2008 presidential campaign.

So much for that! Now, obviously, insurance companies are all for these over-payments, and Democratic leadership isn't letting McCain off the hook for doing their bidding. Jim Manley, senior spokesman to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, tells me, "the self-described foe of all earmarks is with one single amendment providing a big fat wet kiss for his friends in the insurance industry. All at the expense of millions of senior citizens."

In addition to running for President on a campaign of Medicare cuts, McCain has long cast himself as the scourge of pork-barrel spending. And while over-payments to private insurers aren't earmarks in a technical sense, the meaning won't be lost to observers on the Hill. Still, don't expect the GOP to lay off the flip flops on this issue any time soon.

I hope the Leadership can stir up some press on this sh*t. We were unable, thanks to House Rules, to see the full true and ugly face of the party of No Health Care reform there.

Let them flip and let them flop

Didn't Harry Reid once support bringing the industry under Anti-Trust laws. Talk about flips flops and big wet kisses.

It's nice to see you've devolved to the point where you'll reflexively defend McCain. When do you plan to officially register as a Republican to prove your "progressive" cred?

Reid doesn't oppose the anti-trust exemption. Only someone as profoundly disingenuous as yourself believes that opting to present something later as an amendment is the same thing as personally opposing it.

Reid left Anti-Trust exemption out of the bill as a carrot to conservative-leaning Dems (esp. Lieberman, who's been a big proponent.) It not only gives such fence-sitters an opportunity to be "relevant" but also redeem themselves in the eyes of their consituents. The move was not a flip-flop but a strategic decision.

Irrelevant. Indie Pro just wants to spread bile and hatred of Democrats. As you can see from his tu quoque defense of Grampa Simpson here, he's even beginning to identify with Republicans as kindred spirits.

Your hatred for me is hilarious.

Though I must say, as a strong Obama supporter, you are doing everything you can to make mesure I feel like I have no place voting for democrats. Kudos to you sir. You're doing a great job for Obama.

Yeah, you're a "strong Obama supporter" just like Lalo and shooter claim to be when they're not busy spouting Republican talking points. So predictable...

Y'know,

If instead of just regurgitating political talking points, you actually took the time to develop a sophisticated understanding of the legislation -- its central purpose, the provisions achieving its central purpose, how the provisions interact with one another, etc. -- and the political realities of getting such legislation passed, you might actually reduce the number of dumba$$ comments you make, and reduce our need to call you on such comments. Now it's not too late to change, so why don't you try taking the time to develop a sophisticated understanding of the legislation instead of just spewing out talking points?

where am I getting talking points from?

if you had something to offer besides personal attacks, I'm sure you'd trot those out, but all you guys ever offer is attacks. That says what?

Then again, if it's your own work, maybe you should use talking points. One can easily conclude from your past writings that you lack a sophisticated understanding of health care reform. That you believe ending the anti-trust exemption is some panacea to health care reform is ludicrous. But that's what can be concluded from your writing -- that ending the anti-trust exemption is some panacea to health care reform.

ridiculous.

It would allow the U.S. Justice Department to enforce laws relating to price fixing and market allocation, which would have an affect on the insurance industry.

No one is going to hold your hand if you can't grasp the difference between compromise to achieve a bigger goal and rank hypocrisy for the sake of obstructionism. I really don't think you're such a simpleton that you can't comprehend the importance of motives behind Reid's compromise with centrist Democrats vis-a-vis McCain's sop to industry. I think that you are just being contrarian. The question you should ask yourself is why would Democrats want to consider you a member of their party?

why not? Here, I'll show you how easy it is to explain a position.

Reid stripped the bill of the anti-trust expemption. To take it out of the bill, it would've taken 60 votes.

Now if it is offered in amendment, it'll need 60 votes to get it in.

How do you think this will end?

It will end with Republicans having to decide whether or not they want to be painted as allies of the insurance industry. At this point you are basically taking a stand for stupidity.

At the very least, Nelson will vote for cloture. He's not about to piss away his entire future simply to appeal to Nebraska conservatives; poll-wise, he's already one of the most well-off members of the Senate. You have no idea what you're talking about.

“In my first reading, I support parts of the bill and oppose others I will work to fix,” Nelson said. “If that's not possible, I will oppose the second cloture motion—needing 60 votes—to end debate, and oppose the final bill.

I guess we'll see how much more the bill is watered down and mode more conservative, all part of Reid's "strategic decisions".
