The Family Research Council Action PAC held an extraordinary "prayercast" event last night, praying for the intercession of God to change Senators' minds and stop the health care bill.
(The full streaming video is available here.)
The event was an excellent display of the theocratic right -- that is, for the literal institution of religious doctrines in public policy, and appeals to the Deity for active direction and intervention in politics.
As I reported last night, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins began the evening with a false statement, confidently saying that history records the Founding Fathers praying for God's intervention at the Constitutional Convention. (They did not pray, mainly due to the financial inability to get a chaplain, as well as the political pitfall that even seeking a chaplain would alert the public to their internal dissensions.)
Co-host Lou Engle focused the event as a protest against abortion, alleging that the bill would result in government funding and promoting it, and likening their prayers to Biblical figures who worked to stop the genocide of the Jews. "But the Bible's very clear that prayer affects government," said Engle. "Esther's three-day fast changed public policy; Daniel's fast changed public policy; and it's the same, yesterday, today and forever, and that's why we're here."
James Dobson participated via phone, offering a prayer and seeming to tie the health care bill and the country's overall political direction to none other than the Devil: "I just pray that You will frustrate the plans of the Evil One, and revive us again with conviction and forgiveness. Show us how we can further your cause, Lord and advance your kingdom, and we will be careful to give you the praise. Just begin a revival in our hearts that will restore us as one nation under God."
The event included members of Congress, almost all of them Republicans -- but there was one Democrat, Rep. Mike McIntyre of North Carolina, who appeared via a pre-recorded video message. "You know, the power of prayer knows no bounds," said McIntyre. "The true source of power is not found in the halls of congress or the chambers of the Supreme Court or the Oval Office of the west wing, but rather on our knees at the throne of grace." McIntyre did not specifically comment on the health care bill, but we can probably count him as an irreconcilable vote against it.
Rep. Michele Bachman (R-MN) also led a prayer, thanking the Lord for the Godly men and women who are in public life, and asking forgiveness for government leaders that haven't looked to God:
Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) gave a video message, hearkening back to the Pilgrim Puritans for their use of the Bible as a direct guide for the conduct of government: "We could learn from the Pilgrims by understanding that the Bible is not just a book of how to be nice to people, it is an entire blueprint for the way civilization can be structured."
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) also appeared, and DeMint asked for God to change the Democratic Senators' minds. "Whether they've been mesmerized by the president or just convinced somehow in their own heart," said DeMint, "we just need to pray that God'll channel their hearts to realize that the exceptional nature of this country did not come from government control of everything, but from limited government, and a free people with Judeo-Christian principles, that created the character and integrity that made this country work."
The event ended with a 30-minute continuous prayer by various speakers. "Give kings sleepless nights across America," Engle implored passionately. "Lord, break into their hearts while they sleep tonight."

Let's at least be clear about this:
If there is such as thing as the work of Satan, these rapscallions taking the side of insurance barons against the sick and defenseless is a perfect example of it.
And it is beyond mere blasphemy for them to find in themselves the great wickedness to invoke the Lord's name pursuing devilry.

Absolutely. That is offensive praying to God when Jesus Christ for for the poor the downcast the oppressed and the sick. And these Wingnuts actually think that God would hear their prayer when they are praying for a result that is 100% opposite to what the cause and work of Jesus was on this earth.
Hypocrites I tell you. Nothing makes me more angry as for these Repugs to think just because they have the title "Republican". God is on their side. They need to go and lay hands on their buddy that was caught in a bathroom stall and let the people who need this law the most have dignity that one day they can get healed, not go bankrupt and live with some dignity. A worthwhile cause that Jesus would defend.

Always remember this rule: they live in opposite world so whatever they say, the opposite is true. When they criticize someone for doing something, you can bet they are doing the very same thing. (Sex scandals and their attitudes toward gays are great examples of this.)
So if they say they are praying to God to stop HRC, they are actually praying to the other guy.

And if he had charged a fee for service, it would have been a fair amount to put some food on the table for him and loved ones, and maybe put away a little something for the future. *Not* millions to build a zoo in his backyard as one of these scallawags did, etc. And not denying care to some because they were harder to cure than others and he could make more money that way.

As a life long Christian, age 12 to 78, I must say that Christians objecting to health care for everyone is antithesis to what is commanded in the Bible, ie we are our brother's keepers. Amazing that anyone who has studied the sacrificial life of Christ would stoop to this sort of rhetoric that defies the commands of Christ. Not to be preachy, but this sort of hate rhetoric just cuts across any semblance of compassion and concern for others, Amazing!

My thoughts, too. The American Taliban. Why is religion even allowed into the political sphere? Where is the Seperation of Church and State? How was it even Constitutional for Bush to create the Faith Based Office within the White House? And why won't Obama, using the Constitution for what it was written for, abolish it? And are these "prayer warriors" paying taxes or are they still exempt after breaking the law and trying to force religon down everyone's throat?
I don't get it. I just do not get it.
This is one of the most impotant features of the Constitution. One of the main reasons people decided to come to America was to escape religous persecutions. I feel persecuted by their religions.

They mention their opposition to abortion as a reason to be against this bill. My understanding is that this bill does not provide government funds for abortion. Personally, I wish it did provide funding for abortion rights, as I believe such procedures should be covered. However, is that their ONLY opposition to the bill? Otherwise, their actions make no sense at all.

It is, of course, clear beyond need of explanation that God insists that insurance companies be free to reject applicants on the basis of pre-existing conditions. I also recall quite clearly (although I cannot seem to find the proof-text at the moment) where in the Bible the Lord instructs that tort-reform is an indispensable element of any reform effort and that one must be as harsh as possible on illegal immigrants. I have not looked, but I am also fairly certain that the book of Leviticus specifies in intricate detail how abortion insurance can and cannot be funded.

And wouldn't it then follow that these people are either a) superstitious nitwits awed by 5,000 year old thinking or b) working against the will of "god"?
But all that would require critical thinking and a modicum of self-awreness, both of which have been replaced in these people by pure venom.

Unfortunately, they're "preaching" to the ignorant and uninformed, who may actually believe the venom they spew.
For some reason, I don't believe God wants people to die so that greedy, hate-filled, Godless hypocrits can have their way - unless God has recently invested in healthcare stocks.

If George wants to drill in wildlife sanctuaries, this is the path of God. He wants to destroy social security by some crazy idea of privatizing it allowing it all to become investment funds for his Wall Street cronies, such is the Word of the Lord. His ilk wants to punish the sick and enrich investors betting against the sick, then that is the way of Jesus.

Spoken like a true religious fascist. It was Christian conversion offered to the "Praying Indians" at the end of a gun that caused the Wampanoag to resort to guerilla war that nearly wiped out the Puritans in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, Metacom (King Phillip)'s forces were already depleted from years of the ravages of European diseases that accompanied the invaders, making the native assaults fail after a few months. Had there been the fuller number of native warriors that had been around some 50 years earlier, this Puritan bullshit wouldn't be spouted in the halls of Congress today. The Pilgrim understanding of "the white man is the harbinger of death" still oozes from the mouths of these hypocrits with just as potent a sting.

Just wanted to note that nowhere in the Bible is there an explicit condemnation of abortion. However, the Bible does pretty clearly damn to hell those who fail to love neighbor as self, those who bear false witness against neighbor, and those who fail to care for "the least of these" in our communities. And Jesus is pretty clear that love for neighbor extends to enemies (e.g., Jews loving Samaritans), not just those who are part of our gated community.

So tell me again what prayer is for, to further this lords putpose on this land? I thought prayer was meant for worship not coercion, and anyway why does he need your help to further his purpose. Wait, I know, you think your god.

Why do these "patriots" pictured at the top of this story insist on showing disrespect for the flag by wearing it as clothing? It's really quite offensive.

Lou Engle ...said... "and it's the same, yesterday, today and forever"
Hum? That sounds oddly familiar.

I wounder if they could slip in a prayer to lower my premiums.
With my luck, however, God is a shareholder of my insurer.

"This crap is really repugnant."
How about "This sh** stinks?"
When this passes and the nation gets on with its business, there will be just that many more people who will turn away from religion because of the embarassing stupidity of these schmucks.

Wow, that is powerful stupid. And America sinks ever deeper into laughing-stock territory.

"The event was an excellent display of the theocratic right -- that is, for the literal institution of religious doctrines in public policy, and appeals to the Deity for active direction and intervention in politics.
