This just in from Copenhagen after daylong talks between President Obama and key world leaders at the climate summit: a deal has been made.
A U.S. official tells the press the United States "has reached a meaningful agreement with China, India and South Africa."
We'll keep you posted, but check out our earlier coverage here and here.

Walt, buddy, I know you're a taciturn guy, but this is just an inance comment.
Seriously, dude, you gotta do better than that. It's an agreement in principle among World leaders. How could it be anything more than a wing and a prayer?

Hope to LIVING HELL there is something of substance here. We will all spend the rest of our lives watching the world melt, dry up, and burn to hell. The mass extinction of plants and animals is already happening.
What on Earth is more important than stopping this nightmare?
Absolutely nothing!

Think back one year -- to Bush and the oilmen in charge. Even a rhetorical change of stance from our President will start a lot of good things happening.

Obama, an empty suit, makes a deal which is a hollow sham. The Chinese don't give a hoot about this pathetic faker, or his bankrupt country.

We had to go to Europe to make a treaty with China, India and South Africa?
Doesn't sound like what they had in mind when this soiree was set up. Based on the countries involved, I'm guessing the agreement is going to be less strict than the goal, right?

Europe would be rather centrally located between us, China, India and South Africa. WTF should we go to do it?

I'm just saying that (at the time the story broke, at least), I thought we were there to get a treaty with over 100 nations, not just three nations. And that for a comprehensive climate change/emissions agreement, you'd probably want the EU to be on board.
It may work out that way in the end, but when I made the comment, it seemed odd that a worldwide agreement had apparently whittled down to four players.

The deal is a sham. The Washington Post reports that there are no independent verification mechanisms and quoted a White House official as stating the "agreement" is "insufficient to combat climate change".

How can it be both "meaningful" and at the same time insufficient to combat the threat of global climate change? What does it 'mean' if it doesn't lead to results? I'll be curious to see what's so "meaningful" about this.
