In what should have been a sleepy recess week for the House of Representatives, Rep. Parker Griffith dropped a bombshell - he was leaving the Democratic party to join the Republicans.
The GOP was thrilled to add to their ranks and ready to use it as proof, they say, that Democrats could lose control of the House in 2010.
The Democrats were sad to lose a member but not really missing his vote since Griffith (AL) wasn't with them on health care or other broad party agenda items and was a frequent Obama critic.
The facts on the ground suggest it's certainly not going to be smooth sailing to reelection from a new party.
National Republicans were elated but the conservative, anti-establishment movement within the party cast a skeptical eye toward Griffith.
The two Republican candidates who were vying to challenge him as an incumbent now plan to primary him faster than you can say Dede Scozzafava.
Republicans were happy to kick sand into the face of Democrats who are on the verge of a health care win but they have the rather large problem of attack ads they ran against him (which TPMDC has preserved here) and the potential for another intra-party battle to divert attention and resources.
It also will focus national attention on the race between a relatively unknown
incumbent and a newcomer, which either party could benefit from depending on the mood come November 2010.
Sarah Palin likes him, or at least sent him a warm welcome.
From a public relations perspective the timing is a bit strange. The statements from happy Republicans flooded our inbox but the optics would have been better for Griffith politically if he'd made the move when the House was in session (the week they returned from recess, for example, or even before they adjourned).
TPMDC checked in with another southern Democrat whose district is trending redder, but his office wanted to focus on the holidays.
Alabama readers, please stay in touch and let us know what you're hearing on the ground.
Late Update: TPMDC's Evan McMorris-Santoro chatted with Alabama Democratic party chair Joe Turnham tonight, and he said he doesn't expect a new Democratic candidate to emerge in Griffith's district until after the holidays.

isn't this kind of what happened when we decided that black folks were humans, too, in the 60's? dems in the south "defected" to the GOP?
they proved to be bigots on the wrong side of history, so why is this any different? is my history messed up?

Oh heck yeah! Now you're talking. Finally I see someone taking this debate in the direction it needs to go.
Let's make the comparisons and just see how similar all this is.

I was wondering why this is a real story. Who cares? The thugs can have him.

He wasn't with us anyway, and he was a frequent critic of Obama, so what's the big deal? Seems like a pretty trivial matter.

I agree. Although, the resulting comedy is worth the time it takes to read the story. It seems that the right isn't all that thrilled about having him. He just may be unemployed, soon.

Will be a great message to send when he loses his primary. Blue Dogs and Conservadems will realize that there is no place for them in the Republican Party and might start looking to please the Dem base.

Why would you do this politically? He went from one tough fight in November to a one tough fight in the summer (primary) and (if he is lucky) another tough fight in November.

I live in Griffith's district and donated a small amount of time to helping his campaign last year. I can't say that I'm surprised that he has turned tail and joined the repubs, but I get a kick out of the "Dr." address since he has not practiced oncology for quite some time and, in fact, there is more than a little talk about the quality of care and why he no longer practices medicine.
As a matter of fact, he now runs a string of funeral homes!

Something creepy about a doctor opening a funeral parlor. At least he isn't a gynecologist.

Let me see now. A pseudo-Democratic congressperson from Alabama, in office for less than a year, consistently votes against Democratic initiatives and rejects a woman's right to choose, even with her own money, decides to follow his true instincts and become an official Republican, rather than a fake one like Joe Lieberman.
I don't know how our party can ever recover.

What kind of man is Parker Griffith?
An independent medical review tells him all you need know.
Numerous internal complaints were lodged against the care Griffith was providing. Griffith was warehousing cancer patients, under dosing them so he could make more profits through protracted treatments. His approach caused unwarranted pain and suffering, but it meant more money for him.
Parker Griffith. Shameful conduct. He can't be trusted.

Conservatives across the country seem to hate him (except for Palin), so I don't know what he gains from this switch except a tough Republican primary challenge next year. Add in a bitter Democratic Alabama base committed to defeating him next year if he wins the Republican primary, I'd call his re-election prospects questionable.

You have a gift for pithy understatement. Hope we get good TPM coverage of that primary -- should be a pip!

The Radical Conservatives and Tea Party crowd will do everything they can to take this guy out; and anoint a "true" conservative for that district. What was Griffith thinking? Is he saying the Blue Dog Coalition was too liberal for him? Come ON!!!!
Now he's got to raise a ton of cash for a primary challenge; not to mention the money he'll need for the general if the Dems can come up with a strong candidate.
Where is all that money going to come from? The Tea Party? The Club for Growth? Please!!!
Stick a fork in Griffith. He's done.

The laugher in this is Politico....or as it should be named, 'Foxitico' in that they use '...stuns Dem Party', then when called out as to who in DemLand was stunned, have downgraded to 'frets.' Again, who is fretting, and why arent any of those quotes attached to a living person? Are they just making this hooey up?
