A new internal poll from the Martha Coakley campaign says that Coakley, the Democratic candidate in the January 19 special election for Ted Kennedy's Senate, has a huge lead over Republican Scott Brown.

The survey, conducted by Democratic pollster Mark Mellman, puts Coakley ahead by 50%-36%. The margin is similar to the latest Boston Globe/University of New Hampshire poll, and very different from the Public Policy Polling (D) numbers that gave Brown a one-point edge.

But as Politico notes: "Still, by commissioning and then disclosing private polling showing Coakley with a significant lead, Democrats are attempting to send the message that they are both taking the race seriously and that the party's 60-seat majority in the Senate is not threatened."

Man, PPP really hung it all out there on this one. No one paid them for this poll. They did it to increase their name recognition when politicians start looking for paying work next cycle. If the other polls turn out to be right, I don't think they're not going to get the kind of name recognition they were hoping for. If they turn out to be right, however, and it's a squeaker, they're going to be declared geniuses.

Personally, I'm kind of hoping they've blown this one.
