Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter (D) won't seek a second term, retiring from the key swing state as Democrats were hit earlier today with the surprise retirement of Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND).

The Washington Post reports tonight that Ritter, elected in 2006, is suddenly backing down from his reelection bid.

According to the Post, Democratic sources briefed on Ritter's decision cite a tough race for reelection against former Rep. Scott McInnis (R).

Don't these people have any respect for their country? Don't they see which way this is all heading? This is getting scary.

A bunch of chickens. Then again the Gov in Ct retired and it wasn't huge news, and Gregg, Voinovich, Bunning, Martinez and Bond all announced their retirements and all would have had uphill fights to keep their seats in the anti-incumbency year.

This probably gives us a better opportunity to win considering the endless negative publicity he has received this year.

Boy it'll be such a breath of fresh air having Republicans finally in power again, won't it? The Democrats have been in power soooo long. I can't wait to cast a vote for the party that had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with this recession.
I really despise the Independent voter.

Am I the only one surprised to see a likely R Gov of Colorado (or have I missed something/not been paying attention)

It's a bad year to be a sitting governor. I wonder how many of them have re-elect numbers under 50%

This should not surprise anyone.

The failure of the Obama administration and the Democratic majority in Congress to present a unified, coherent and effective agenda in response to an overwhelming victory in 2008 has soured a substantial portion of their 2008 majority.

We desperately need a Democratic majority that can shed its allegiance to entrenched corporate interests and articulate a clear message of populist reform.

Oh boy, this one isn't turning out too good. He wants to avoid a tough race, then why the hell would he run in the first place? That makes no sense to me, you are in a swing state, of course your elections will be tough.

Word on the street is that he is having an affair. His wife was not at the press conference and has been making odd remarks to press for some time...
